How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 1 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: 12” Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw with Laser Guide

Chicago Electric makes a 12” Double-Bevel Mitre Saw, product #61970 which has a faulty blade guard. The lower Guard is listed as Aluminum in their product brochure (Part # 123) but, at some point, they switched to plastic. The connection spot on that plastic guard where the Mitre Saw Connecting Bar is attached to the plastic Lower Guard keeps breaking defeating the safety feature as the guard becomes non-functional. To continue using the saw one can remove the safety guard, which I suspect many have done, or replace the guard which I am now in the process of doing for the third time. This time the blade guard broke hitting the blade and virtually disintegrated in front of me sending parts flying. Fortunately, I was not hurt. I called Harbor Freight to get another replacement blade and complain. I tried to complain to the people at Harbor Freight Tools 1-888-866-5797 and was placed on a very long hold ~ 45 minutes. Then I was told they no longer make the product so there is nothing they can do at this point. However, they continue to sell the plastic guards which I was told is a popular item as I ordered it. The CPSC needs to require that Chicago Electric recall the product and replace the guards with a true Aluminum Lower Guard as advertised.
