The product, in the report: Evolution Rage 4 Metal Multi-Purpose Chop Saw. 10 Amp 7-1/4 inch Model #203661791 Price $110.00. Manufacturer: Evolution Power Tools, Venture One Long Acre Close, Holbrook, Sheffield, England, S20 3FR, United Kingdom. Distributor: Home Depot. I have full receipts for this saw
I purchased a Evolution RAGE 4 cold metal chop saw from Home Depot’s online store on Dec. 22, 2016. The saw is made in Britain and it took 10 days to arrive. I did not use it until January 28, 2017. I was asked by Home Depot to give a review of it before I used it. So, I gave the saw a good 5 star review based upon the Youtube videos I saw. But, when I actually tried to use it the first time, per the instructions. And I’m a licensed professional engineer. So, I know how to read instructions. The saw on it’s first cut, locked up, shot fire at least 1 foot out the sides, its motor exploded and the saw caught fire. I waited for the fire to stop, and the saw to cool off, before trying to restart it again: this time with no metal to saw. The saw then shot sparks out the side of it, and smoldered. I was using the saw for the first time outside on a concrete pavement. Had I been using the saw inside my wooden work shop, or my home garage, my entire building would have been burned to the ground. Possibly with me in it. As a result of this, I changed my recommendation for this saw on Home Depot’s website, stating clearly what happened and the danger. HD has refused to post my revised recommendation and asked me to post a better one. I will not. I sent them a email in response telling them that the saw is dangerous, that my revised recommendation is public and if they get sued HD is guilty of a coverup. This chop saw has at least 3 major defects. 1. motor is too weak, 2. there are no clutch brakes, or shear pins on the blades to protect the motor. 3. the motor failure mode is prone to starting fires and exploding. Please alert the public before someone dies.
