Emergency room Made Jun 15, 2023, sent to the company Jun 20, 2023, published by CPSC Jul 5, 2023
The product, in the report: DeWalt Pressure Washer, Model DXPW3324I
In July 2022, I purchased a new DeWalt pressure washer at The Home Depot. I’m quite familiar with using pressure washers as I have used several in the past 35 years. This new pressure washer was working fine as I cleaned the siding on my house. I noticed the engine starting to sputter so I shut the machine off to refill the gas tank. Once refilled, I grabbed the starting cord handle and gave it a pull. Because the starting cord is angled slightly toward the front of the machine, my pulling of it caused the entire machine to lunge forward. What I assume is the hot metal muffler in the front of the machine momentarily came into contact with my left leg and I immediately felt the my leg burning and it turned red. The next day, I had a rectangle-shaped burn mark on my leg with blister bubbles and oozing burns. With the burn being painful, oozing, and blistered, I decided to visit my local Emergency Room. The ER doctor and nurse prescibed medication to apply to the wound and indicated that I had a partial-thickness burn. As it was rather grotesque and somewhat painful, I covered the wound when wearing shorts for the remainder of the summer. Nearly a year later, the scar on my leg is still present and I’m assuming will be there for life. I consider the design of this pressure washer, with the starting cord angled towards the front of the machine, along with its light weight, to be a design flaw. It would have been just as easy for the manufacturer to NOT have the starter cord angled toward the front of the machine. Rather, it should be angled directly to the side of the machine so that the pulling motion does not cause it to easily pull forward on its large rear wheels. I contacted the DeWalt company and their representative insisted that I am the only person to ever injure myself in this manner with one of their pressure washers. They did, however, put me in contact with their lawyer to settle the matter. Although giving assurances that they “want to make this right” and that they would cover my ER bill, cost of bandages, replace the machine with a different model, and account for my injury, the lawyer has stopped all contact with me for the past 4 months. He has not replied to numerous emails requesting resolution.

No one hurt Made Sep 17, 2013, sent to the company Nov 5, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 20, 2013
The product, in the report: Pressure Washer
Caller stated that he purchased a pressure washer. The unit clearly states on the box “3200PSI”. The instruction manual states many times that you should not aim the unit at any skin because the pressure will cause damage.
He began to put the unit together after reading all the precautions in the manual and saw that the hose to use with this 3200 PSI unit is rated at 3000PSI. He knew this was an accident waiting to happen - this 3200 PSI would surely cause the hose to rupture and then cause injury to the operator. (9/16/13) He called the 800 number for the firm, but was informed that they were unable to assist him.
He ordered a heavy duty hose capable of handling 4500PSI. He feels the manufacturer should be held accountable for this inexcusable cost cutting move.
Consumer told the representative at 1-877-362-4271 that the hose was not rated at the PSI the pump is rated. He told the consumer that he gets at least 5 calls a day about this. He said Dewalt is not responsible for what resellers do with the unit once it leaves Dewalt. The consumer told him that the unit comes from Dewalt with this 3000PSI hose. No response from him. The consumer asked for a hose rated for 3200PSI. Can’t help you was his response.
