  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 17, 2019, sent to the company Aug 12, 2019, published by CPSC Aug 26, 2019

The product, in the report: Trip AA Mercury Cadmium Batteries 1/5 volt R6UM3 1.5 volt Manufactured in Amarillo, TX

This consumer is reporting that he purchased a miniature pop up lantern from the store named in this incident report in February 2019 and that from the very beginning of use he had problems with it not working or flashing so he put it in a drawer to return on his next trip to that store. When he removed it from the drawer he said that there was a thick liquid that resembled the color of coffee with creamer in the battery compartment. He is reporting this incident as a burn and potential fire hazard stating that the batteries burning up could have possibly sparked a fire. There are no injuries The caller has contacted the manufacturer, he exchanged email with [REDACTED], [REDACTED], she did send him claim form.

https://www.harborfreight.com/250-lumen-compact-pop-up-lantern-64110.html All information and emails in folder supplied. Today they are wanting to send an unknown contaminated product through the mail or Fedx. Have they not already involved to many people into this unknown contaminated product. This company seems to not care about the safety of others. They pushed this claim and now they will not do anything to resolve the issue they created. Either this product was sold and returned , then put back on the shelf or it was sold from their shelf contaminated. I would really like to know if I should be worried about exactly what this contamination is. Nobody can elaborate or refuses to elaborate. I would like for a separate entity to test this unknown contamination since I might be in danger, other customers and store employees? How would you like to find that you bought an unknown contaminated product and took it home to your family. Not knowing is the worst part. Harborfreight seems to not care at all. With their response and losing this case from Mr.[REDACTED] ( when he quit) I have no faith in this company and if I sent ti back I would feel confident that the product would simply disappear. See following folder and files. Thanks for your time and help in this unknown contaminated matter. Do citizens not have the ability to know what contamination is being forced on them. What a shame.

Actually this popup lantern needs to be inspected by a 3rd party as to what the contamination really is and if customers of Harborfreight were exposed to a hazardous chemical/contamination or if Harborfreight is selling used items as new. The pictures provided show something is causing a reaction with the batteries supplied and could be a fire hazard. Harborfreight was interested in this and had me fill out a claims form but now will not answer their emails. Last response was to send item back and they would look at it. I have no doubt that item would disappear just as my case disappeared when the 1st claims rep.left the company. The replaced lantern doesn’t work as expected or claimed. It can stay on until the batteries dies if you don’t pay close attention to the light going out when collapsed. Advise upon receipt and let me know if you require anything else. Thanks for your time and help in this matter.
