The product, in the report: Laptop battery
Caller reported that the laptop battery overheated while charging for a few hours, there was a popping noise and she noticed smoke emitting from underneath the laptop. She immediately unplugged the unit and noticed that there was black soot on the carpet from where the laptop was located. She removed it and placed it outside.
Caller stated that after placing it outside she noticed that it started to smoke more excessively and then erupted in flames, she used her garden hose to contain the flames and threw it further away from the house. She contacted the fire department because she was scared the fire would spread to her house. The fire department came out and looked at the laptop and advised that the fire was contained and should not place it back in her house. They advised her that they would check to see if there had been a recall.
Caller stated that the manufacturer will be contacted later.
Caller still has the laptop outside. She feels that this laptop battery is a fire hazard.
Update to this report: Caller did contact the manufacturer Toshiba on July 15, 2018. The battery replacement was purchased on [REDACTED] or {REDACTED] about 5 years and was specifically made for that laptop. Toshiba claimed no responsibility due to the original battery had a recall on it, but caller was never notified. They claim it was on the news. Original purchase of laptop March 2010 from Best Buy.

The product, in the report: Toshiba PA 3817U-1BRS 10.8V 48WH 6-cell battery
I had bought the replacement battery for my Toshiba laptop. A few minutes after I connected the battery to my laptop, the laptop started smoking . So I turned it over to remove the battery but it burst into flames and the flames started shooting straight up into the air. My husband had to open the door so that I could throw the whole laptop outside before the battery acid and flames got on me or anything else in our home.

The product, in the report: Toshiba Laptop battery, stock with Satellite series laptops.
Toshiba battery pack was charging, then a sulfur-like smoke smell came from the laptop. Immediately disconnected the power, and unseated the battery pack. Similar product already on recall. Pins on battery and laptop were blackened. No evidence of melted battery, but seemed it was going to melt and/or catch fire. Laptop was very hot, battery was extremely hot to the touch.

The product, in the report: Toshiba laptop battery PA3817U-1BRS
I was informed by Amazon that a Toshiba laptop battery I purchased was on a recall list. I had contacted Toshiba about the battery after purchase to complain that it was so hot I could not put my computer on my plastic table covering because it melted. But Toshiba had told me there was no problem. The heat from the batter continually caused my computer to shut down. Once, it shut down for 3 days. I called Toshiba and was told over the phone that the shutdown was caused by a bad motherboard. Of course, that was false. But I was forced to buy a new computer (Not a Toshiba, I will never buy another Toshiba product except batteries needed to run my current Toshiba products). Amazon provided a web link. My battery PA3817U-1BRS was on the recall list. I have only owned the battery for a few months, but Toshiba refused to honor the recall. I am very frustrated. It is disgraceful that a company can produce a dangerous product, then refuses to provide a replacement.
