The product, in the report: My wife had a battery Pack connected to a Sony CD player. One day the battery pack exploded and started emitting fumes. I immediately called Sony to report the incident and their response was to tell me to dump the battery pack in the garbage. I told them that the fumes could be hazardous and I would recommend that they inspect it at their facility. Only after thirty minutes of conversation did they agree to have the battery sent back to them for examination. That has been well over a month. I did get a Case # [REDACTED]. I have attempted to resolved the problem with Sony on numerous occasions. I guess they stop talking to me when I informed them that my wife became dizzy from the fumes.

Hurt, care not known Made Apr 8, 2015, sent to the company May 7, 2015, published by CPSC May 21, 2015
The product, in the report: DVD player battery DPU - FX930 “Sony” #NP - FX110 Battery Pack Corrosive lithium ion pack made in China UL file# E251447
Rechargable battery pack incorporates two cells (3.7 volts each). One cell distended causing the plastic pattery pack to crack open Research shows this “exploded battery cell” is happening to man NP-EX110’s owners. I’ve found over nine other consumers with this problem. This battery pack can not be repaired. Sony has not responded regarding the pack inherent danger (to adults & children owning a DVP-FX930 DVD player). The bad cells are lithium ion rechargable, made in China. I contend that Sony should recall & replace all defective “NP-FX110’ battery units.

The product, in the report: Sony lithium ion rechargeable battery pack (model # NP-FX110)
The lithium ion rechargeable battery pack (Sony model # NP-FX110) on my children’s portable DVD player (Sony model # DVP-FX930) spontaneously expanded in the case breaking the battery pack. This occurred during or after normal use, in normal temperature, without any warning. There were no injuries, however this appears to be a significant safety concern for the battery leaking or exploding, since the defect compromised the case. I have noticed that there are multiple other reports of the same defect for this battery on SaferProducts.gov.

The product, in the report: The battery pack, product number NP-FX110 of my Sony portable DVD player, product number DVP-FX820.
While charging our Sony DVP-FX820 portable DVD player, the battery pack (NP-FX110) inside the battery case swelled up and split the battery case open along one side. The battery was also very hot at the time that the battery case split open. I disconnected the charger and removed the battery from the DVD player, and placed it outside the house in case it leaked or caught fire. Now that it has cooled down it remains split open and the battery pack inside remains swollen up. I cannot use the battery in this condition.

The product, in the report: Lithium ion rechargeable battery
While my friend was watching a movie on a portable DVD player, the battery swelled up and cracked open the housing, identically to the existing report on this product at www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1351022 The DVD player, Sony model DVP-FX810, was undamaged and still functional using its AC adaptor. The battery model is Sony NP-FX110. The unit was purchased from RadioShack on 11/30/2010 and had previously been used in the store as a demo unit for an unknown duration. Apparently you have reported this as not being a safety concern, my view is that an incident of this nature is a safety hazard and apparently not an isolated case. For example how do I properly dispose of this battery? New batteries are no longer available from Sony Corp. and are apparently only available on eBay and similar sites.

The product, in the report: Sony Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack NP-FX110
While using this Sony DVD player, the battery pack split open as the internal battery expanded and swelled. I have ready other reports and replies by Sony that the pack does not pose a risk, but I do not want to leave this defective item within reach of curious children who may attempt to take it apart, exposing themselves to the battery materials inside.
This battery pack is extremely expensive to replace and the DVD player cannot currently be used without it.

The product, in the report: Sony Portable CD/DVD player DVP-FX930 Battery is NO-FX110
Took Sony DVD out to use and pretty much the same as lots of other threads on here, in that one of the batteries had expanded and forced the cover off the back of the battery, so now inoperable (although not sure I would have tried to use it even if I could have)! Seems to be a common problem on this model which is a shame as I puchase Sony as often as I can.

The product, in the report: battery pack (np-fx110) for sony portable dvd player
The battery lid attached to the sony portable dvd player got bent and wouldnt close from one side. The battery model is np-fx110.
The battery pack wouldnt fit. Upon opening the lid, we found that one of the two cells inside had puffed up.
Replacement batteries cost almost as much as the dvd player. This is a product defect and potentially dangerouns since the product is mainly used for kids.
I hope sony issues a recall and gives a replacemnt battery for all customers facing this issue.

The product, in the report: Sony Model No. NP-FX110 Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack for a Sony portable DVD player Made in China DC 7.4V 3800mAH
The Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack ( NP-FX110 ) for our Sony DVD player has had one of it’s cells expand to the point that it has cracked the plastic case that houses the cell. It is pressurized to the point that it seems like it will explode if anything punctures the cell’s membrane. The unit is now inoperable. It’s safe to say that this is happening with MANY other units and this is not a fluke occurence but a manufacturing defect that could potentially hurt someone. Sony has to realize that these DVD players are primarily used by children and a curious child whose DVD player stopped working could potentially puncture the pressurized cell, exposing the child to its chemicals. I’d like to know what Sony will do about this and if they are interested in keeping a long time customer.

The product, in the report: Black Lithium Ion Battery Pack for a Portable DVD player
Sony battery pack Model No. NP-FX110 split open while attached to portable dvd player while in use. Upon inspection, one of two 3.7V cells has expanded to approximately 5-7 times the volume of the other (unaffected) cell. Feels squishy to the touch, as if filled with a gas under pressure.
The unit was not subjected to trauma or temperature extreme, and was in normal use playing a dvd at the time it expanded. It is suspected that, had the malfunction not been detected, the cell could have burst and spread its contents outside the casing.
The battery pack emitted an unusual odor, and I suffered a headache at the time I was examining it.

The product, in the report: Sony DVD Removable Battery Case Model Number NP-FX110.
Sony DVD Rechargeable Battery Model Number NP-FX110 over-heated. Inside the battery case, one of the two [REDACTED] 3.7V Lithium Ion Battery Cells Model Number 5548135 swelled without bursting the protective metal jacket that protects the lithium ion batteries from the air. However, the swelling was great enough to burst the exterior, plastic, protective-case of the NP-FX110. Fortunately, the lithium-ion battery did not burst when my children tried to squish the battery case back together. Had the lithium-ion battery burst when squished, it may have caused a fire.

The product, in the report: Sony Lithium Ion Battery Pack, Model No. NP-FX110
While my son was sleeping, he heard a crackle coming from his Sony CD/DVD player that was plugged in and charging. When he got up to check, he found that the battery pack had expanded/exploded and deformed the plastic case. This is a potential fire hazard. The player is Sony Model No. DVP-FX921, with a barcode that states “Produced 09A8 S01-5007627-D.” The battery is Sony Model NP-FX-110, barcode S01-9302757-J-A. The battery is a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery pack made in China. It was being charged with the Sony charger that came with the player, Model No. AC-FX160. I have not yet found the receipt, but believe it was purchased around two years ago. I would appreciate if you would investigate this before someone else has an incident and potential fire that could cause property damage or worse.

The product, in the report: Sony battery pack NP-FX110
We own a Sony portable DVD player, DVP-FX921. The battery pack (Sony NP-FX110) that attaches to the bottom of the unit split open due to the battery inside of the component has swelling up. It was attached to the Sony supplied charging cord at the time it was noticed. I had been plugged in no longer than 12 hours.
I spoke with Sony Customer Service and was told that there was no recall and that I would have to send it in to the Service Center for repair. Which upon investigation would cost apporx. $180.
