Made Oct 25, 2025, sent to the company Nov 17, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 2, 2025

The product, in the report: Skil 40V 5.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery (model #BY8708-00)

I was out of town; a neighbor contacted a mutual friend who notified me there was lots of water rushing outside from inside my home. Another neighbor was able to turn off the water. When I returned home a few days later, I pushed the garage door opener to park my car inside the garage, it wouldn’t work. When I went inside and took a look in the garage, it look like a bomb exploded. Next day I contacted the fire marshal to learn what happened. From his investigation he learned the lawn mower battery ignited a chemical reaction which resulted in a fire. The fire reached the water heater pipes which caused the house to flood and also put the fire out. There were no physical injuries.

The product, in the report: The battery is a Skil PWRCore 40 5Ah Lithium. It is a large capacity, rechargeable battery. It is red and black and was sold as a set with the mower.

A large Li-Ion battery used to power a lawn mower and a trimmer has started to leak a black oily liquid. I noticed it while trimming some weeds and immediately pulled the battery off of the trimmer. The trimmer operated poorly and no one was injured.

The product, in the report: Skil PWR Core 40 Lithium 2.5Ah 40V Battery

I purchased a used Skil PWR CORE 40 40-Volt Pole-Saw, Battery, and Battery Charger from an individual off of [REDACTED]. On the date noted, the battery began oozing a black, foul-smelling, tar-like sludge from where the front fascia connects to the rest of the battery casing body. The battery level indicator still works, but this battery is obviously defective and I will not use it again. I had used it several times since I bought it last year and never mishandled or otherwise abused or misused the battery or tool or charger. I never at any time dropped the battery, and to my knowledge it has never been damaged or experienced physical or electrical shock. The battery is rated for 2.5 ampere-hours, is model number BY8705-00, and has the serial number 132030240.

The product, in the report: SKIL PWR CORE 40 5.0Ah lithium battery This was purchased at Lowe’s in 2021 as part of a package with a lawnmower - SKIL PWR CORE 40-volt 20-in Cordless Push Lawn Mower 5 Ah (1-Battery and Charger Included).

A SKIL PWR CORE 40 5.0Ah lithium battery exploded in our garage. The battery was not being charged and had not been recently used. The battery caught multiple nearby items on fire. My wife very luckily heard noise from the fire and discovered the issue within minutes of it happening and we were able to get the battery and the items it caught on fire out of the garage before it caused major damage or injuries. Upon researching the issue, we heard from the insurance agent for the company that there have been other fires. And there are others online who have mentioned similar issues with the exact same battery.

The product, in the report: 40V SKIL lithium battery for lawn mower model PM4910-00, 20” brushless mower. Photos will be attached. WE ALSO HAVE A VIDEO OF THE FIRE BUT THE FILE EXCEEDS 100MB SO WILL NEED INSTRUCTIONS A TO HOW TO GET IT TO YOU.

A lithium battery for a SKIL lawn mower caught fire in our home. It was being charged inside as per the instructions. Some smoke and odor alerted us as thankfully we were still awake (11pm). We were able to just get it outside when it exploded. We used up two fire extinguishers but the battery kept exploding and sending shrapnel everywhere.

The product, in the report: Skil 40V Lithium Battery Model: BY8705-00/BY8708-00. Red and Black in color.

On 07/23/2023 a SKIL lithium battery model BY8705-00/BY8708-00 that I use for my SKIL 40V 20” lawn mower model PM4910-00/SM4910-00 self-combusted in the middle of the night in my garage, setting my car on fire and causing severe smoke damage inside of the garage. Fortunately the fire did not get through the drywall. I was not storing the battery in a way that was inappropriate for lithium batteries as stated in the manual. The monetary cost of the fire was a ruined car valued at $8k, fishing rods valued at $500, and the home insurance deductible will cost $4.5K. Total damages $13K. No personal injury occurred. I purchased the product in 05/17/21.

The product, in the report: PWR Core 40™ Lithium 5.0Ah 40V Battery - battery that came with a skil electric lawn mower

PWR Core 40™ Lithium 5.0Ah 40V Battery - I placed the battery to charge in the charger. 90 minutes later my son came running upstairs to me saying he smelled smoke. I entered the garage and saw my work bench top in flames. I opened the garage and grabbed the hose and extinguished the fire. It was obvious from the remains that the battery charging caused the fire. When I went to Lowes to replace the battery I was told that their whole stock of the same batteries were defective, that the coolant had leaked out.
