No one hurt Made Sep 8, 2025, sent to the company Sep 11, 2025, published by CPSC Sep 25, 2025
The product, in the report: 40V lithium battery
At approximately 3 am on 9/7/2025 the fire alarms in my home went off. I traced the source to a 40 Volt Ryobi lithium ion battery that was one of two batteries that came with a mower, model number RY401021US. The battery was not in a charger. The heat caused the underside of the battery to burn away and created dense smoke and strong odor. The heat from the battery apparently caused damage to other items in close proximity including a can a spray paint that exploded and splattered paint throughout the area.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Battery Black, silver, yellow Model Number: P108 4ah, 72Wh Serial Number: CS18013D461635
Ryobi P108 4ah battery pack manufactured 1/1/2018 overheats when charging. The battery gets over 150 F during charging and can’t be touched. I bought this from Home Depot in 2019. The battery has always been this hot when charging. I’ve only charged it a total of 6 times. There is no error showing on my P117 charger and the battery always charged. There is no fault with the charger as different model battery’s don’t get hot at all. I’ve contacted Ryobi Support about the overheat issue and they don’t think its relavent, its not in warranty and deny there is a problem. I’ve offered to send it to them for examination. They declined and stand by the warranty position. They declined when asked, to address my issues concerning my safety and the safety of my children. I believe this battery will explode. Ryobi has no response to that concern.

No one hurt Made Jul 20, 2023, sent to the company Oct 19, 2023, published by CPSC Nov 2, 2023
The product, in the report: lithium ion battery
This caller is reporting that the lithium ion 40 volt battery on his lawnmower exploded around June 20, 2023. He was in his home around 8:30 PM when he heard an enormous thud sound that shook his house. He dismissed the loud noise as thunder since there were storms nearby. Probably around June 22nd or June 23rd he went to his shed with the intention of taking his lawnmower to his second home.
He opened the shed then he saw that the battery on the lawnmower had blown up and was in ashes. When he left lawnmower in the shed; the battery was unplugged, there is no power in the shed. His battery has been replaced by the manufacturer after a month of multiple talks with them. He wanted other consumers alerted to the potential danger and he firmly believes that if he had been in the shed when the battery exploded then he would not be around to have created this report.
After a month of speaking with the manufacturer he did receive a replacement lithium ion battery. The lawnmower is running and in use with the new replacement battery.

The product, in the report: 40 volt Ryobi li po battery
I have a 40 volt Ryobi trimmer and I used it and put the battery away separate from the trimmer as I always do this was on Sunday. On Tuesday evening I came home after being gone about 1.5hrs and smelled a heavy electrical smell in my garage. I traced it to the battery. It had burst opens and started melting. Luckily for me it was in a steel enclosed tool box. No real damage to my property just the smell to get rid of. No one was injured.

Had reported same issue to CPSC in 2016 and was contacted by Ryobi rep who deemed that Ryobi blower was possibly at fault rather than battery with blower replaced by newer model along with battery replacement. The battery identifying numbers are: P108, 130429075, E206252, CS15454D461827. The past battery replaced was the same numbers except for CS15283D510849. Do see that a P108 battery was recalled in past for overheating but was a different number (130429028) though appears same issue.

I was using my Ryobi 18 volt hybrid blower to clear my driveway of grass clippings, using a battery not a power cord when it stopped working. I removed the battery & found a melted mess on the battery stub [pos. side] & a melted inside of my blower. Ryobi says the battery’s are out of warrantee & they can’t help. The blower is in warrantee & I have to take to The Home Depot tool rental for a repair. I’m afraid to charge these battery’s indoors any more because of a fire. Ryobi doesn’t seem concerned at all about this issue. Thank You, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Ryobi One+ 4Ah battery pack
I was using a Ryobi One+ drill. I inserted a 4Ah battery pack into the drill. I had only been using the drill 10-15 seconds when the battery terminal melted. The heat melted the grip/handle on the drill and burned my hand. I tried to put another battery in the drill, but the battery damaged the drill and it won’t work anymore. There was a recall a couple of years ago on a 4Ah battery, but this battery was a different part number. The battery from my drill was a model P108, part number 130429075. I have contacted Ryobi customer service about six times. They have assured me that the safety department would contact me, but it has been about 10 weeks since I began contacting them. I haven’t received a phone call from anyone to resolve these issues or inquire about the incident.

The product, in the report: RYOBI 18volt full-size Li-ion battery - dark gray/silver
Reported to RYOBI on 2014-04-29T14:36:37-04:00 A week ago this battery was a little difficult to remove from the (RYOBI) blower (P2102). The stem of the battery was very hot, and the plastic around the positive contact of the battery was deformed from heat. It still recharged ok. Today I again had difficulty pulling the battery out of the blower. It smelled as though it was burning. After taking it off the charger, the voltage is a very adequate 20.95v.
My problem is that this battery should not be overheating to the point that it could catch fire, and it should be replaced. Home Depot would not swap this battery since I bought it 10/30/2012.
The battery will not charge today. It reports as being DEFECTIVE in the charger.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 18V Li-Ion Battery, Model P108 Part# 130429049
Battery Explosion-
Single battery was on charger, heard ticking noise, unplugged charger from wall, removed excessively hot battery from charger seat, 15 minutes later it exploded into a 10’ fireball sending internal battery cells all over my kitchen which also independently exploded into similar fireballs.
Purchased two Ryobi P108 batteries for $99/each from Home Depot approximately during the first week of June. Immediately experienced charge issues. Battery charge indicators showed full charge, but device using the battery would stop functioning after 20 seconds. Turning the device off and back on would repeat the situation.
Brought both batteries to Home Depot store purchased from, was advised they couldn’t replace the batteries in store, it would have to be done through Ryobi- But they would call and setup the exchange process. They wanted a device to put the battery in, which I had in my vehicle and repeated the issue. Ryobi wanted Home Depot to put the batteries in a charger to perform a test function, which they did not have available and at that point the store manager exchanged the batteries for two new ones. No mention of any fire or explosion hazard was mentioned by either Ryobi while home depot was on the phone w/ them, or by any Home Depot Employee. Ryobi is exclusively sold through Home Depot.
The replaced batteries were used one time. One of the two batteries was placed on the Ryobi charger on 7/11 which does a diagnostic test each time a battery is inserted, test passed and charge process begun. Around 12:15 AM on 7/12 the battery failed and exploded.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Lithium 18 V 4Ah Battery Pack and Charger
On April 6, 2013 the light in my home office flickered several times followed by a sound reminiscent of arcing of electricity. In a period of one to two minutes it reoccurred several times. Concerned, I looked out the window of the room and observed smoke exiting the attached garage from the side of the garage door. I immediately went into the garage thru a kitchen door and observed fire in the corner of the garage on a work bench where I had a Ryobi Battery and charger along with a few other tools. I grabbed a cheap red mop and began hitting the flames in an attempt to extinguish the fire. The mop broke and a grabbed a second mop. Eventually I was able to get the fire out but not before thick black smoke from the ceiling to about chest level was through the garage. I then exited the garage and called the 911. While waiting for the fire department, I opened the garage door to ventilate the smoke. By the time the fire department responded, the smoke had cleared and the firefighters checked to ensure the absence of further fire. They determined the cause of the fire to be the Ryobi charger and battery.
