The product, in the report: Nuon branded 9v alkaline battery. Grey/silver packaging on box and battery casing. White and black screen printing on battery casing.
On duty staff heard a loud popping/breaking noise that they could not immediately identify the source of. After seraching to locate the source of noise, staff member found pieces of a 9v alkaline battery in a cupboard. Further investigation of the cupboard revealed that multiple Nuon alkaline 9v batteries had burst/exploded within the cupboard. These batteries were unused/unopened, individually wrapped, in the original cardboard container of 12 units, sitting in a plastic tray in the closed cupboard.
No injuries were reported, but the potential for injury or fire was present. Had a battery failed while someone had the cupboard open retrieveing materials, injury from debis, chemical content, or fire could have occured. Scorch marks were observed on the interior of the cardboard container, indicating flame was present at time of rupture. This could have started a fire in the materials in the cupboard, allowing extended growth before detection by personnel or extension out of the cupboard to sprinkler protected space in the office.
