The product, in the report: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Batteries, 4-pack. The package states 25 years of shelf life.
I am submitting this report because an unopened package of lithium AA batteries emitted smoke while in storage, creating a potential fire hazard. Although no injuries or property damage occurred, this was only because the incident was detected immediately and corrective action was taken. I believe the incident warrants investigation due to the potential risk posed by an overheating lithium battery product that had never been opened or used.

No incident, no one hurt Made Sep 8, 2026, sent to the company Sep 15, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 29, 2026
The product, in the report: Energizer Industrial D Batteries
I ordered Energizer Industrial D Batteries from a seller of Amazon & Amazon fulfills the orders for these different sellers. The batteries come from one stock pile Amazon has no matter the seller. After ordering I received these batteries as usual & 1 day later after them being delivered to me I noticed Amazon refunded my money & left the message no need to return. I called Amazon & talked to customer service because I wanted to know what was going on with the refund no return. The customer service rep informed me the batteries that I received are a septic concern, straight to waste dispose product! No details other than that. After researching these batteries I found they are dangerous & can blow up my lanterns I use if terminals touch each other during handling I could be injured as well-they are dangerous. I had another order in to Amazon that was arriving Thursday so I called & customer service said yes same batteries coming! I told the rep what happened to ones I received already & he said yes-the same batteries are coming but if you want they have not shipped yet, I can cancel them. I said please cancel. It was done. Due to the danger inside my home I placed them in my shed away from the home. I called & Amazon is still selling the same stock pile of batteries now & returning the money & having customer handle & dispose of the dangerous batteries. For my family I have been on telephone all day trying to find a way to safely dispose of the batteries & no where will take them. The thing is-Amazon is continuing to load these hazardous batteries through the purchase, refund, deliver them & leave up to consumers to dispose.
(09/15/2026) My additions to this report are as follows: The batteries Energizer Industrial Batteries Sold by Amazon have caused injuries to my hands & fingers & lanterns from the rusty terminals on the batteries touching each other while loading the into my lanterns. The batteries are sparking up & are a fire hazard exploding in the lanterns as well. A set of a total of 24 have been refunded as septic concern & I called in to find they are selling danger batteries & them refunding & leaving us the consumer to dispose of properly! The batteries damage products, lanterns, etc. etc. & I have been a victim of the hand injuries & burned & the lanterns ruined by explosion.

No one hurt Made Apr 5, 2025, sent to the company Apr 9, 2025, published by CPSC Apr 23, 2025
The product, in the report: Energizer AA Batteries . They are labeled as Energizer Max with a use by date of 12-2035.
From: [REDACTED] Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2025 5:42 PM To: support@energizer.com; [REDACTED] Subject: Energizer AA Batteries leaking battery acid/whatever
We purchased Energizer AA Batteries last Fall in preparation for the Xmas season use. They are labeled as Energizer Max with a use by date of 12-2035.
When my wife was removing these batteries to discard them she found that at least three of these batteries were leaking battery contents resulting in white crud around both ends of the battery. These batteries were used to power some string LED lights. We havent seen this occur with any batteries that we have purchased for the past 10 or more years.
This is unacceptable. We may never purchase your batteries again. We expected your batteries to be the best and they are not.
Bad quality in our opinion. You can do better than this.

The product, in the report: Energizer 312CR-12ENRUS 12 pack hearing aid batteries
The new child-resistant packaging for hearing aid batteries (Energizer 312) is not only difficult to use but is dangerous. It is almost impossible to cut each battery out with regular scissors. Small pieces of plastic fly out and I have got two small cuts from the sharp edges as I try to extricate the batteries from their casing. I have written to Energizer but received no reply yet. This has happened each time I try to get a new battery in the past month.

The product, in the report: Energizer max batteries, AA size
We have two toddlers and a baby, so we have A LOT of toys with batteries. We have been using energizer max batteries and have had four separate batteries leak battery acid. Not only did this ruin four of my childrens favorite toys, but I have toddlers and babies using them. The battery acid leaked all out into the battery compartment and started to leak outside of it as well. It is so scary and dangerous. Energizer has a no leak guarantee for two years. This is not at all accurate and when contacting them, they dont seem to care. I didnt save the first two toys because I thought it was a random occurrence. I did save the last two and have one set of batteries. Because I dont have photos of the first two, they wont even consider helping me. Im very upset my children could have been seriously harmed and that energizer clearly doesnt care. Something needs to be done.

No one hurt Made Dec 11, 2017, sent to the company Mar 26, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 9, 2018
The product, in the report: Energizer AA battery 1.5 V Alkaline
I was taking a AA Energizer battery out of a 16 battery pack of which I had already used several and inserting it in a decoration. My hand and my fingers immediately began to burn from extreme heat. I finally took it to my husband to make sure I wasn’t imagining things and he confirmed that the battery was extremely hot. I finally decided to put the battery outside where it was about 40 degrees. Then I put it in a ceramic bowl outside since out deck railing is wood.. It is cool right now but I am afraid to bring it in the house or put it in the trash since I am sure it would heat up again and cause a fire. This battery is really hot.

No one hurt Made Jul 22, 2017, sent to the company Feb 23, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 26, 2018
The product, in the report: [REDACTED]
Two months ago, our daughter received a toy ([REDACTED]) as a birthday gift. It requires 4 AA batteries in a compartment under the seat. This morning it wasn’t working so my husband went to change the batteries. He used Energizer AA batteries (alkaline), brand new, stored in the package, and inserted them correctly into the toy. Within seconds of putting in the batteries, he smelled burning plastic and smoke started coming out of the battery compartment (we are unsure if it was coming from the battery itself or the terminal on the toy). He immediately popped the batteries back out and the smoke stopped. We removed the batteries from the toy and took everything out to the yard for safety. The fact that had my husband not smelled the burning plastic, our 1 year old was seconds away from sitting right on top of a toy that was about to catch fire is terrifying. Luckily he did notice and was able to stop the fire before it caused any damage or injury (ie there are no burn marks or damage to the plastic).

The product, in the report: AAA Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries just a label with a UPC code and “W2464 (V2)”.
LED BATTERY OPERATED LIGHT identified as [REDACTED] with bar code 0 39564 10132 8 and W2464 (V2) when powered by 3 each AAA Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries - after about 10 minutes operation became too hot to hold. Examination shows interior plastic melted with a hole formed between the battery compartment and the circuit board. Material surrounding the LEDs is deformed and cracked. Sticky fluid has oozed into the battery compartment (melted plastic? chemical from battery?) Seems like this was headed for a Lithium fed fire?

No one hurt Made Jun 29, 2015, sent to the company Jul 7, 2015, published by CPSC Jul 21, 2015
The product, in the report: Eveready Energizer 9v
June 22, 2015 Subject: Possible Problem with [REDACTED] Model No. [REDACTED] Fire Alarms and 9v Batteries This home was built in 2008 and First Alert Fire hard wired alarms on all three floors. Recently we purchased a 4-pack of 9v [REDACTED] batteries to have on hand and the first one used was installed about a week ago on the first floor. The alarm seemed reset properly after a test press of the test button but started intermittent alarming from then on. [REDACTED] online suggestions were tried to no avail after loss of sleep, thinking the problem was fixed. The new 9v battery tested good with my voltmeter. I took the alarm apart and noticed positive leaf spring was not vertical and not protruding as far as the negative. In trying to find out how the pin got bent, I also noticed the [REDACTED] negative battery spring posts was also different when compared to an Eveready Energizer I had on hand. The [REDACTED] has a square post. Having roughly measuring the 9v negative and positive post the dimensions of the [REDACTED] versus Energizer, they are about the same. What I learned in placing either battery in the [REDACTED] alarm was the positive and negative leaf springs are bent near the end and goes inside the battery post holes leaving the only lower one edge to touch the posts. The lower edge allows for less tension resulting in a poor contact. The bend of the leaf spring needs to be made at a lower point and possibly lengthened to make contact at both ends of the battery posts. My view is this is a defective product and a recall may be in order. Please notify me of your findings as I am interested in knowing what needs to be done to replace all of my alarms.
