The product, in the report: The defective battery was purchased from BJ’s Wholesale club. 8 of the 12 batteries in the package had been used without incident. The package indicated “Best if used by 2015”.
I bought a package of 9v batteries by Berkley & Jensen from BJ’s. I used a battery to power a CO2 detector in my home. In the middle of the night, I awoke to a loud pop like breaking glass. Immediately thereafter my CO2 detector produced a low battery warning. When I opened the CO2 detector to replace the battery I discovered that the battery had exploded.

No one hurt Made May 17, 2014, sent to the company May 29, 2014, published by CPSC Jun 12, 2014
The product, in the report: 9 volt battery
A 9 Volt battery exploded, which was mounted inside a smoke detector.
I heard what sounded like a gunshot or small explosion, immediately followed by the smoke detector sounding. The smoke detector stopped sounding after 10 minutes or so (hard wired with battery backup), but then started the beeping associated with a low battery. Upon opening the battery compartment of the smoke detector, I immediately noticed the battery had burst open.
The battery had burst with such force that it damaged the housing of the smoke detector. Both the top and bottom of the 9 volt battery had ripped open along with battery acid oozing out.
Had this battery been located next to someone’s ears when it burst (i.e. headphones, etc). I’m certain that it would have caused hearing damage.
