I purchased a battery on Amazon, an off brand replacement battery for a Sony Vaio laptop.

When I received the battery, it appeared to be uncharged. I plugged it into an external charger that I had purchased from Amazon. Several hours later, the battery caught fire and exploded.

Luckily, I was in the room when it caught fire, so I wrapped the battery in a sweatshirt and got it out of the house. Otherwise, there could have been a very bad house fire.

There were no severe injuries, luckily, although I burnt my hand very mildly and inhaled a good amount of the toxic smoke that resulted. I am unsure of the long term side effects of this.
