I purchased a APC BR1500MS2 Battery on eBay from the computek20102 seller, and used [REDACTED] to make payments. I ordered the item on May 15, 2026, and it was delivered on May 19, 2026. Several weeks after receiving and setting up the product, I woke up one day to my entire house smelling like burned plastic. The source was the backup battery, which had overheated and filled my 2-story house with toxic fumes from burning plastic. This product was located in our home office. The battery was so hot that when I touched it I had an immediate reflex to pull away. I had to unplug it to allow it to cool off before I could further investigate.

No one hurt Made Feb 15, 2016, sent to the company Feb 24, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 9, 2016
The product, in the report: Battery backup for computers or other electronics
I have/had a APC battery backup 500 ES Model BE500 Serial # JB0304010587 Today I was sitting at my desk and the lights on my desk started to flicker and I smelled something burning. Turns out that the plastic on the bottom of the unit just about below where the power switch is on the top started melting.
I sent an email to APC and they say they will reply within I believe it was 24 hours.
Anyway, thought I would let you know as I believe this could have caused a fire had I not been sitting there.
Thanks [REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Nov 22, 2015, sent to the company Dec 1, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 15, 2015
The product, in the report: APC BackUPS Model BE500U
APC BackUPS model BE500U serial number JB0303033833 alarm went off & as I investigated the alarm, I noticed a smell of burned/melted plastic & determined that the top of the unit was very warm to the touch. It had been in use behind my family room home entertainment center for several years. The unit was sitting on carpeted floor behind entertainment unit. I disconnected the unit & placed it outside the house due to concern that it might catch fire. This occurred around midnight, after everyone in the house was asleep. The following morning, I inspected the unit & noted that the plastic on the outside bottom of the unit near where the power cord enters was visibly melted/deformed. I removed the bottom cover & determined that the melted area was immediately below & in contact with what appear to be 2 rectangular aluminum heat sinks on the main circuit board. Thankful that this did not occur while we were away & burn our house down.
