I used the SafPow 42V 2A Battery Charger 3 Prong Universal Replacer for 36V Lithium Battery Power Supply Adaptor (purchased on Amazon) to charge my computer and my cellular phone. Both devices immediately shut off then I was never able to turn them back on. The cellular phone got very hot to the touch where I had a slight burn on my hand.

The product, in the report: SafPow 42V 2A Battery Charger 3 Prong Universal Replacer for 36V Lithium Battery Power Supply Adaptor

On September 18th 8:06PM a fire occurred in my garage caused by a defective SafPow 42V 2A Battery Charger. The charger was connected to electric scooter and malfunctioned, resulting in a thermal runaway event that led to a fire. The incident caused significant property damage, personal injury, and financial losses.

    Sequence of Events:

    1. Fire Origin:

The SafPow 42V 2A Battery Charger was actively charging the [REDACTED] electric scooter at the time of the incident.

The charger overheated and caused the scooter’s battery to ignite, resulting in a rapidly spreading fire.

    2. Spread of Fire:

The fire destroyed a [REDACTED] electric scooter and caused severe damage to three additional scooters stored nearby:

    [REDACTED]

Despite attempts to mitigate the damage, all four scooters were declared total losses.

    3. Personal Injuries:

While attempting to move the burning [REDACTED] scooter out of the garage to protect my family, I sustained multiple injuries:

Broken Nose: The burning scooter struck me in the face, resulting in a nasal fracture requiring splinting and pain management.

Burns to Both Hands: First-degree burns were sustained while handling the burning scooter.

Facial and Lip Injuries: A deep gash above my upper lip (now a permanent scar) and a bitten-through lower lip requiring antiseptic treatments and healing ointments.

Inhalation of Toxic Fumes: Prolonged exposure to smoke and hazardous fumes emitted during the fire.

    Impact and Losses:

    Property Damage:

The fire destroyed all four electric scooters, leaving no salvageable parts. The estimated replacement cost for the scooters is $8,898.

    Medical Costs:

Out-of-pocket expenses for personal injury care include burn care supplies, wound treatment, nasal fracture care, and protective gear, totaling $165.

    Emotional and Physical Strain:

The injuries and incident have had a lasting impact on my physical health, emotional well-being, and ability to conduct daily activities, including managing my business.

Attempts to Resolve: I have made extensive efforts to contact Amazon regarding this incident. These efforts include speaking to numerous supervisors and managers, being referred to their partners such as [REDACTED], and repeatedly following up with their claims adjusters. Despite my persistence:

The claims adjusters have ceased responding to my inquiries.

Supervisors and managers have been unwilling to engage in direct communication or provide clarity on the resolution process.

Responsibility has been shifted to the third-party seller, despite Amazon’s role in facilitating the sale and the product’s inclusion in a global recall due to severe fire and burn hazards.

Additional Note: The SafPow 42V 2A Battery Charger involved in this incident was recalled one week after the fire, underscoring the danger posed by this defective product. The lack of accountability and resolution has exacerbated the financial and emotional toll of this incident.
