The product, in the report: Riyobi 40v lithium ion battery charger
A defective Riyobi battery charger (a 40v lithium ion charger) started a fire in our garage. Thankfully, my husband and I were home. It was 3am and we were able to put the defective charger out with a fire extinguisher. But my car was totaled and the damage forced us to relocate for 3 months while the house was being repaired. It was an incredibly stressful time. Our lives were very much disrupted. We could have lost our pets if it happened just a few hours later. We could have been killed.

No one hurt Made Mar 20, 2024, sent to the company Mar 22, 2024, published by CPSC Apr 5, 2024
The product, in the report: Ryobi 40V Volt Lithium-ion 6.0 Ah High Capacity Battery, Model 0P40602VNM, Black, 6inL x 3inW x 3inH, used for lawn equipment (mower, string trimmer)
On a Thursday afternoon, we suddenly noticed smoke in our kitchen. We were able to identify quickly that the smoke was coming from one of our cabinets. I opened the cabinet and found smoke forcefully flowing out of one of our Ryobi 40V batteries for our lawn mower and string trimmer. I was able to remove the battery to the yard, where the battery began to actually flame and burn. We called the fire department, who advised us to just let it burn out in a fire pit until it exhausted all of the lithium in the battery.
We suffered some minor smoke damage in our cabinet, as well as some melting of the casing of the other two Ryobi 40V batteries that were in the cabinet. The batteries were all purchased new with new equipment in May of 2023, and used within manufacturer guidelines. The batteries were kept on the charger only when charging, and removed once they were fully charged. We always stored them off the charger in a kitchen cabinet that is dry and maintained at 68-74 degrees year round. The batteries had stored for the winter and had not been disturbed since Oct/Nov of 2023, so there was no apparent event that would cause the battery to suddenly combust. We were lucky (a) to have been home to notice the smoke and remove the burning battery before it caused a house fire, and (b) to have enough time to research how to extinguish the battery and NOT use a standard fire extinguisher or water on it, which actually makes battery fires worse. If either of these things had gone differently, we could have had a lot more damage or injuries.

No one hurt Made Mar 12, 2015, sent to the company Apr 3, 2015, published by CPSC Apr 17, 2015
The product, in the report: Ryobi battery charger part of a Expand It grass trimmer/tree pruning kit
On Sat, March 7, 2015 at approx. 2:30pm., I discovered my garage fully engulfed in white smoke, I immediately called 911 and Montgomery County MD Fire Dept.(MCFD) responded. Upon arrival, the cause of the smoke was determined to have been a Ryobi 40 volt lithium battery charger located on top of a refrigerator in the garage. It should be noted the charger was NOT plugged in and battery had last been utilized in Oct. 2014 prior to being cradled in the charger for the winter. MCFD determined the charger overheating had caused the resulting small fire/smoke to burn the plastic (charger/ battery) and paint (top of refrigerator). MCFD utilized a heat seeking device to locate the source of the fire/smoke after first ruling out the refrigerator plug as the cause. The charger/battery were destroyed and refrigerator damaged. Additionally, smoke damage was evident behind the refrigerator, which leads directly into the family room of the residence. MCFD also indicated that the timing of my opening the garage doors after smelling the smoke in the family room limited the fire/smoke damage from spreading to other locations inside the residence. I purchased the Ryobi charger & battery in Sept. 2014 from The Home Depot as part of a Ryobi Expand It grass trimmer/ tree pruning kit.
On March 7, at approx. 3:30pm., I contacted Ryobi Customer Service and the CPSC to report the incident. I was told by Ryobi that the incident was being forwarded to their Safety Division and that a Safety Officer would contact me within 48 hours. On Mon., March 9 the CPSC contacted me; however, I have not been contacted by Ryobi as of this writing (March 10 & 11) to no avail. Ryobi customer service will not allow the consumer to speak with the Ryobi Safety Division.
The weather conditions were dry, approx. 40 degrees, with snow on the ground.

Hurt, no treatment Made Apr 27, 2013, sent to the company May 6, 2013, published by CPSC May 20, 2013
The product, in the report: Ryobi One+ Charge Station
One World Technologies Inc and CPSC issued a recall for Ryobi 1+ charge centers. It limited the recall to model P108 number 130429028. The recall should be expanded based on my experience with model P113 number 140501013. Description follows: My Ryobi battery charger began smoldering as I awaited a battery to recharge so I could finish weedwhacking my property. At first I smelled what resembled ammonia or urine as in when my dog had had an accident and lifted his leg to mark territory. Then I realized the odor that was by then burning my throat and causing a headache was more like that of a corroded battery compartment in a small unit like a flashlight. I approached my sitting room window seat where the charger was plugged in. The unit was smoking copiously and the odor very intense. I knew it was smoldering to catch fire but was more afraid it would explode. I am a 65-plus female homeowner living alone and cannot afford to be incapacitated. So despite my fear of explosion I opened a nearby window, unplugged the unit and gingerly tossed the hot object out the window onto the grass below. Several hours later, still fearing it might burst, I approached for a closer look. It was cooled off but I was unable to release the battery. It had fused to its compatible Ryobi charging unit. My local mechanic pried it apart and verified that the battery and charger were compatible based on the information printed on each. Home Depot would not hear of any compensation or replacement without a receipt which I did not have. They made no mention of problems or warnings regarding their Ryobi specialized product. I searched the internet to reveal the recall information. I will be writing to both Home Depot Corporate and to the listed distributor, One World Technologies of this Chinese-manufactured product to document my incident and to notify them of this e-mail to you, the CPSC. My photographic documentation is entitled THE RYOBI FIRE STARTER. I would attach a copy of the graphic representation here but there seems to be no mechanism for doing so. The melted and disfigured components are quite obvious.
