  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 26, 2017, sent to the company Apr 25, 2017, published by CPSC May 9, 2017

The product, in the report: Retro Versal/Retro Bit Universal 3 in 1 AC Adapter NES/SNES/GENESIS used to power the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and Sega Genesis Model 1. This power supply only supplies 9V DC, 350mA, which is insufficient.

A company called Retro-Bit (http://retro-bit.com/) is marketing and selling a transformer power supply for electronic game systems. It is called the Retro Versal/RETRO BIT UNIVERSAL 3 in 1 AC ADAPTER FOR NES /SNES /GENESIS 1. The model/PN is: RB-UNI-1361. This power supply is specified to output DC 9V/350MA. They can be found on Amazon at this link: https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Adapter-GENESIS-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/dp/B001S2VT6I and elsewhere.

The company advertises this power supply for sale to use with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and the Sega Genesis Model 1, all classic game systems. The issue is that the NES and SNES, per their specifications pull 850mA of current. The Genesis Model 1 pulls 1.2A (1200mA) of current. When using these Retro-Bit power supplies they get very hot, probably due to the fact the power supplies are not designed to source more than 350mA of current. An original NES power supply was specified to output 1.8A (1800mA), well above the NES’s power requirements. This Retro-Bit model is incapable of supplying even the bare minimum. I am aware of no incidents of fire or injury. But, I believe it is unsafe to use these power supplies in the manner in which they are advertised, due to the heat generated and the risk of fire.
