The product, in the report: 48V lithium e-bike battery and replacement charger purchased through Temu. The charger failed and caused a spark and fire at the battery charging port during charging
Product Description 48V lithium-ion battery charger (54.6V 2A), multi-tip universal charger compatible with multiple connection heads. Brand / Seller Information Retail Platform: Temu WhaleCo Inc. Third-Party Seller: Mingwei (also listed as Mingcool Technology) Date of Incident Approx. April 2026 (within the past month) Incident Description During normal use, upon connecting the charger to my e-bike battery, the charger experienced a sudden electrical failure at the charging port. The failure produced visible flames approximately 34 inches in length, along with smoke and a strong chemical odor consistent with lithium battery malfunction. The fire originated directly at the battery charging port when the charger was inserted. The battery casing was compromised at the connection point, indicating internal electrical failure or surge from the charger. Immediate action was required to disconnect the charger to prevent escalation. Hazard Description This incident presented a serious fire hazard. If I had not been present to disconnect the charger: A residential structure fire could have occurred The battery could have ignited or exploded If the failure had occurred while operating the bike: It could have resulted in serious bodily injury Injuries Health Effects Following the incident, I experienced: Headaches Nausea These symptoms are consistent with inhalation of fumes from a malfunctioning lithium battery. I am a disabled veteran with pre-existing neuropathy and other conditions. Due to the loss of my e-bike (my primary mobility device), I have been forced to walk long distances, causing additional physical strain and pain. Product Damage Charging port area of the e-bike battery was visibly damaged Battery casing integrity compromised E-bike is no longer safely usable Company Response The platform (Temu) issued a refund of $20.72 for the charger only. This confirms acknowledgment of the product transaction, but: No action has been taken regarding the safety hazard No investigation has been communicated No recall or warning has been issued Ongoing Risk The product appears to still be available for sale on the platform, posing a continued risk to other consumers. Requested Action I am requesting investigation into this product and appropriate action to prevent further incidents and potential harm to consumers.
