How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 4 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 10, 2020, sent to the company Sep 1, 2020, published by CPSC Sep 16, 2020

The product, in the report: Duracell charging cable for [REDACTED], 10’ length. Silver in color, braided outer covering.

On May 16, 2020, I was sleeping in a bed and was awoken by the smell of smoke. I immediately observed the [REDACTED] charging cable was glowing red hot and smoldering. This was at the male connector plugged into the [REDACTED].

This was a Duracell charging cable manufactured by their sub contractor, partner and distributor, ESI, at (212) 883-8838.

Had I not awoken I am sure the smoldering red hot would have caused a bed fire.

I reported the incident to Duracell on 05/18/2020. Duracell responded to contact their sub contractor. I responded that it was their labeled product and their responsibility to contact me for more details to correct the situation. To date, no one from Duracell has contacted me although they said a representative would.

The product, in the report: Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power Source purchased from Amazon LLC august 25, 2017

Purchased a Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power Source in Aug. 2017. Recently noticed it was not working. Unplugged it from the wall. Pushed the power button. The battery had a large spark and pop (like small explosion). Smoke and fire started pouring from the battery. Fortunately I was close to a door and was able to get the battery outside before flames started coming from battery. If this battery was left in my home at the time, there would have been a huge house fire!

The product, in the report: Duracell® USB Type-C Cable, 6’, White, LE2309 6 foot USB Type C charging / high speed data transfer cable for smart phone.

My wife and I were leaving the gym after a workout / swim late in the afternoon, I had a newly purchased Duracell 6ft USB Type C charging / data cable was connected to my cars 12V power port, or for the older generations, cigarette lighter socket. As soon as we started the car, the small end of the cable started smoking and burst into flames. We ripped the charger, and chable out of the car and threw it out the door to the parking lot where we were. We had purchased this particular cable just prior to going to the gym / pool.

The product, in the report: Duracell AC charger model DU2517 SN# 0000280202 For a picture see http://rustybolt.info/wordpress/?p=3668

I went to unplug my Duracell AC charger from the wall. Instead of coming out of the wall socket, the case separated into two halves, and the bare connections to the power prongs were exposed (remember the prongs were still plugged into the wall). My hand was right next to the live wires! I didn’t get shocked, but I could have if I had been careless and let my hand move a little bit closer.

I carefully removed the case half from the wall socket. Apparently when the case was assembled, the two screws were too big for the holes in the plastic posts, and the posts split. When I went to unplug it, I did not exert excessive force on the case, I just pulled on it, expecting the whole case to come out of the socket like it should have. Instead, the split plastic posts broke, and the two haves of the case separated. A picture of it can be seen on my blog. http://rustybolt.info/wordpress/?p=3668
