The product, in the report: Battery charger and tender, 12 V, 5 A
As an amateur radio operator, [REDACTED], I run my station on batteries so that it can be available in an emergency when no utility power is available.
To charge the batteries and maintain their charge, I bought a 5 amp BatteryTender Part No. 022-0157-1, S/N 3412-100698C, from Amazon.com on 7 Dec 2012 and connected it to a [REDACTED] battery. To test the charging, I deliberately ran the battery down to a 12 V level. The wiring was standard for the setup in my upstairs radio room.
I woke up in the middle of the night and smelled an acrid odor in the house and found the BatteryTender warm, but not hot, and the battery warm. The red light on the BatteryTender was on continuously, as it had been all day. The red light indicates the charging mode. The battery had boiled over, warping the top.
Apparently, the BatteryTender had failed to go from the charging mode to the maintenance mode, over charging the battery. The battery’s internal water was converted to hydrogen and oxygen. The result is well known to be an explosion or fire hazard. The BatteryTender should have stopped charging and gone to a maintenance mode automatically. That’s why it’s called a “Tender” not a “Charger”.
This is a product which is dangerous when it fails to work as intended.
I sent an e-mail to service@batterytender.com on 12/18/12 and have not had any response.
