  1. First aid

Made Aug 21, 2012, sent to the company Sep 5, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 19, 2012

The product, in the report: Utilitech model 0320778 500 Watt Portable Work Light

Purchased a Utilitech model 0320778 500 Watt portable halogen work light from Lowes. Assembled in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Set unit on ground in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Used in driveway in dry conditions. Approximately 2 minutes after plugging the unit it, the protective glass lens shattered explosively. Small, sharp shards of glass were thrown outwards from the device. I was approximately 4 feet away and was struck by the glass. I received minor cuts in two places. Glass shards were very difficult to clean up because of their small size and their “sharpness”. Most of the lens remained intact but cracked like automotive safety glass. I don’t know if the glass lens was defective or whether the entire design is defective. The unit generates alot of heat.

My specific concerns are the force with which the glass shattered, the distance the shards were thrown, and the “sharpness” of the glass residue.

I tried to contact the company to report the problem, but nobody answered their phone.

I have no dog in this fight. I’ll bring it back to Lowes and get a refund. I sent a note to Lowes and told them that I thought they are stocking a dangerous product. Maybe you can get them to pull the product too.

    Thanks and regards, [REDACTED]

Mine failed immediately, others have reported the same. Store cashier said chronic issue when I returned. This is a safety hazard, it spewed hot glass all over our work area.
