Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 14, 2019, sent to the company Aug 22, 2019, published by CPSC Sep 6, 2019
The product, in the report: 18 Volt Cordless drill, 1/2 inch chuck, Teal with yellow highlights, drill has a removable bubble level and screw bit holder, another circular bubble level is located on the back of the drill behind the vents and a magnetic spot on the top of the base to hold loose screws or nuts while working.
I was outside my home preparing to repair an Ground Fault outlet and was using the drill to screw a couple of screws needed to attach the outlet to a 4x4 wooden post. As I pulled the drills trigger flames shot out of the vents at the rear of the drill burning the hair off my hand and wrist. I’m a fairly hairy guy and my missing hair is quite noticeable. I was lucky in the fact that a moment prior to squeezing the drills trigger I had had the area where the flames came out of next to my head and face. So I held the drill away from my body and squeezed the trigger again and sparks flew out of the same vents/holes at the rear of the drill. The drill continued to smoke for about 30 seconds. I removed the battery and now I don’t have anyway to secure my outlet and I have bald patches on my hand and wrist.

The product, in the report: 18.0 Volt NiCd battery, cordless half inch chuck variable speed drill motor. Black and Blue body with yellow torque adjustment. White label on right side of body containing manufacture, model number and battery type information.
While light drilling into wood with my RYOBI SA1802 drill motor I began to smell a burning smell and observed smoke emitting from the cooling vents surrounding the motor. The rpm’s slowed noticeably and I immediately removed the battery. This incident happened about 5 years ago. I purchased a new drill and while cleaning my garage today came across the one that had been smoking. I was going to throw it away but thought I would see if there was a way to repair it online. That is when I found this web site. I tried it again today and I could smell smoke and observed what appeared as sparks or flames and a lot of smoke coming from the vent area surrounding the motor.

The product, in the report: Ryobi cordless 18 volt drill. Same as the Ryobi drill 1802m that was recalled.
I own a Ryobi cordless drill model number SA 1802. Ryobi has a recall for model number 1802M. My trigger switch got hot and started smoking so I immediately pulled the battery out. I notified Ryobi about the issue and how my drill has the same issue as the one recalled but they refused to replace it. It is identical to the one recalled and uses the same switch.

The product, in the report: ryobi 18 volt drill driver
I was using a ryobi 18 volt drill driver model number sa 1802 to fasten screws into a bi fold closet door frame. As i was fastening the small 1 inch screw into the door frame a flash fire emitted from the exposed section of the motor. I stopped using the driver and checked to see if any sawdust was on the motor but none was there. This happened on 12/23/2015, I stopped using the drill after the incident. The drill has not been used much only for common household projects removing screws or fastening ones. The drill was kept in a cool place and was not overheated before or during this use.

The product, in the report: Ryobi cordless drill [SA 1802], Trigger area on the handle got hot, started to smoke and the drill stopped working. The handle emitted a burnt smell and the battery also overheated. This is a similiar recall problem with the Ryobi HP 1802M. The switch appears to be the problem, since I’ve read the other recall entries. This unit needs to be investigated and a recall issued. Thanks in advance.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 18.v cordless drill Model P200
Ryobi 18.v cordless drill Model P200. I was using the drill when it began to smoke. The area around the trigger began to get warm. I know another model was recalled because of possible “problems” in trigger area. Ryobi (800-597-9624) says this model isn’t under recall and mine is out of warranty.
Since the drill is no good I took it apart. An area around the black wiring connection to the trigger switch is burnt and melted. The corresponding area on the hand grip is also melted.
I believe the trigger switch may be a defective part and a safety issue due to the burning.
I have pictures I can send.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Cordless drill BD 0532
While using my Ryobi model BD0532 cordless drill it became vey hot and started smoking, I stopped the drill and allowed it to cool, when I tried it again it ran slowly and started to smoke. I was using the drill to drive a drywall screw so it wasn’t under a heavy load.
I spoke to a person in the tool dept at Home Depot where it was purchased and was told it was a common problem and its under a product safety recall.
I contacted Ryobi and was told that the recall covered a different model. In looking at the recall notice the drills look identical but it is a different model #. The fack that they look identical makes me wonder if the BD0532 should be included in the product safety recall as it appears to be a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: Cordless portable electric drill
Ryobi 18 volt cordless drill recently became warm while in storage with battery attached. The power switch jammed in the OFF position, possibly due to plastic melting inside the switch, and the battery was run down, possibly from the switch not turning off completely.
There is a recall for a similar Ryobi 18 volt cordless drill, model HP1802M, sold during that time period, and that recall appears to be for similar problem (CPSC Release #11-009), but today, Ryobi said my model SA1802 was not affected. However they could not explain how my drill’s power switch differed from the other models or provide any details about the switches, nor could they explain, with any specifics, what usually failed in the switches.
Frankly, I believe the recall should be expanded because some Ryobi drills sold around 2003 may have the same defective power switch.
