Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

We purchased a Craftsman C3 drill model no. 315-116890 from our local Sears. Last night while using the drill for a simple task, the drill started smoking and caught on fire while in my hand. I have contacted Sears and was given the runaround and told there was nothing they could do because there was no recall from the manufacturer.

  6. Emergency room

Made Dec 12, 2012, sent to the company Jan 3, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 25, 2013

The product, in the report: Craftsman drill bit set sold by Sears in 2006. The set contains various sized drill bits from small and thin to thick and longer. The set is in a black small plastic case with a sliding black plastic closure at the top seam. I think the case says “Craftsman” in black lettering embedded into the case. The inside of the case has slots for each drill bit and labels the size of each drill bit. I don’t see a serial number on the drill bits or the storage case. I have pictures, but the system is not letting me “attach” them after upload. Available upon secure, verifiable request.

I purchased a Craftsman drill bit set from Sears in Hicksville 6 years ago. I am not expert, but I believe the drill bits are made of metal and the set contains all different sizes from very thin to very thick bits. The drill bits have been lightly used only a handful of times by me in a residential setting over the duration of ownership.

On 11/30/12 I used one of the thinnest drill bits in a Craftsman rechargable power drill that was full charged and fully functional, but as I was using the power drill correctly in a safe manner and lightly drilling a hole into a soft plastic gutter on a mark designed per the manufacturer instructions to be drilled, the Craftsman drill bit snapped approximately in half while the drill was in use. Since there was no safety measure in place to disengage the drill power upon snapping of the drill bit, the drill slipped out of control at the moment of the drill bit breakage into two pieces with the bottom jaggedly broken half still inside the drill spinning. The moving broken spinning bottom half of the drill bit ended up drilling a hole the size of the drill bit deeply into my left hand pointer finger. It all happended in the matter of one or two seconds. I just remember screaming at the top of my lungs outside and running inside to the bathroom sink to begin pouring rubbing alcohol, peroxide and water over the mutilated finger. In the frenzy, I remember seeing a circular plug of jagged, torn, warped sink fall into the sink from the area that the drill tore into. I had to immediately go to the emergency room for treatment due to this faulty product.

I don’t think that metal drill bits should be made so cheaply that they snap because it can hurt a consumer as it did to me. My finger is healing from the outside-in, but it is so sore to the touch and is scarred. This is upsetting because I am a young woman who cares about her appearance and also has a whole host of household duties that have been impaired to be performed as a result of the injury.

Additionally, there is no warning label on the drill bit case or the drill itself, which are both Craftsman products announcing that the drill bit could snap. This product is dangerous! I cannot find any type of identifier on the black plastic drill bit case for a serial number.
