The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Emergency room

Made Jul 2, 2020, sent to the company Jul 27, 2020, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2020

The product, in the report: 1/2” Heavy Duty D-Handle Variable Speed Reversible Drill

Drilling hole into trees stump with newly purchased Chicago Electric drill. Drill bit was [REDACTED] 1-1/4” with [REDACTED] 12” Quick Change Extension attached. With 1st hole and 1st ever use of drill, bit entered stump wood to approximately 6” depth without issue. Drill bit continued to spin but could not be pulled free of the hole. Flipped direction switch to reverse and pressed trigger. Chuck and attached bit unscrewed from the drill. Confused, I flipped direction switch to forward and aligned male threaded end of drill to female threaded end of chuck and pressed trigger. As the chuck and drill threaded back together without resistance, the sudden force of the two pieces coming fully together, the embedded bit likely wrenched into a jammed state in the hole and spun the drill, dislocating and fracturing my right ring finger. It was later discovered that the screw inside the chuck housing that secured the chuck to the drill had broken in half allowing the chuck to detach from the drill during a single routine use.

The product, in the report: Chicago Electric 1/2 In. Heavy Duty Variable Speed Reversible Drill

On 03/24/2020 my spouse and I were remodeling our attached garage. At 1825 hours while using a Chicago electric 1/2 In. Heavy Duty Variable Speed Reversible Drill my wife was injured. After I assessed her injury, I discovered an electrical burn on her left bicep. When asked to reenact her actions to determine what had occurred, she proceeded to hold the drill at her eye level parallel to the ground in an attempt to remove a 1.5 inch in length Phillips head screw form a perpendicular wall. I also at this time observed smoke coming from the collar of the power cord which entered the base of the drill. The cord was immediately disconnected and placed in storage. The drill was purchased 18 months ago and only lightly used for minor home repairs.
