The product, in the report: This report regards a defective wheel(s) on a mobile Kobalt brand large tool storage chest Model 0351095 designed to hold hundreds of pounds of tools.
This report regards a defective wheel(s) on a Kobalt brand large mobile tool storage chest designed to hold hundreds of pounds of tools.
Use: The tool chest was used by an adult homeowner in a home workshop environment. The tool chest was not exposed to degrading or unusual substances or any improper use. The chest is normally stationary and only moved a few feet on occasion. On September 8, 2020 I was relocating the large tool chest (this is the lowest system of three stacked/nested tool chests) when it stopped rolling suddenly. I checked the wheels and noticed that there were rubber pieces next to one of the wheels. Looking closer it was apparent that the wheel was not functional.
Hazardous condition: Apparently the defective plastic wheel tread overmold deteriorated causing the wheel tread to separate from the plastic wheel hub. The resulting reduction in circumference of the single affected wheel caused a severe wobble and loss of unit stability. The large and heavy tool chest (six feet tall when combined with the other three chests) in that condition is not able to be used safely and a dangerous condition exists in that there is a high risk of collapse and an accompanying potential for serious injury of death.
