The product, in the report: DeWalt DWHT10998 retractable utility knife. Handheld knife with a yellow, black and gray body that holds a standard utility razor blade. The blade extends and retracts with a thumb slider and has a quick-release switch for changing blades. The model number DWHT10998 is molded into the handle. I purchased two of these knives and both have the same blade-retention problem.
I bought two DeWalt DWHT10998 retractable utility knives (UPC 076174109986). I was cutting down a cardboard box with one of them, which I had used only about six times before. I extended the blade as usual and began cutting down and away from me. At the end of my third cut, the razor blade came flying out of the front of the knife and almost hit my child in the face, who was standing across the room from me. I never engaged the blade-release switch.
On closer inspection and testing, this knife is unable to hold a blade: the blade comes loose when even gentle force is applied perpendicular to the blade from the same side the quick-release switch is on, without that switch being engaged. On further inspection, the second knife I bought has the same problem. This is an unsafe product with a critical design flaw.
