The product, in the report: 7.25” Black & Decker circular saw, homeowner grade, model cannot be identified due to damage.
While cutting flooring materials, the saw began to emit an unusual odor and then sparks came from the vents. I immediately unplugged the cord and brought the saw, smoking, outside. A few moments later, after going inside to ventilate the room, I found the saw engulfed in flames in the yard, there was a small grass fire which we extinguished.

The product, in the report: electrical circular saw
While the consumer was cutting some wood the saw kicked back causing him to let go of the trigger. When he let the trigger go the saw continued to operate. The consumer was able to unplug the saw immediately for it to stop. The amount of time he was using the saw is unknown.
When he plugged the plug back into the outlet the saw began to operate again. He gave the handle a hard tap and the saw stopped operating.
The consumer removed the switch and noticed the cooper pits on one side of the trigger were pitted. He also noticed excessive amounts of grease on the trigger. When he removed the switch, it was very clean. He opened up the switch. There were two sides- one to run and one to brake. Both sides had grease from the mfr. The side to run, the grease was black and burnt. The copper connection froze in the on position.
The firm was contacted on 3/13/2012 and the consumer was advised that they had never heard of such a thing happening. The consumer was given a 20% discount on the purchase of a new switch. The consumer also advised the representative (name unknown) that he has used the saw more than a few times, saw has low hours.
He replaced the on 3/12/2012 and noticed that the switch was not the original switch and there was some changes made.
