  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 27, 2018, sent to the company May 3, 2018, published by CPSC May 17, 2018

The product, in the report: Model# 919.167311, 30 gal., 6 hp, serial # 2316066411, date on tag is 04-15-03 (I assume this is the date of manufacture). This is a Sears Craftsman compressor.

Compressor started making an unusual noise and began smoking. I unplugged it and haven’t used it since. I found the recall info online for this Craftsman compressor. I followed instructions, called the appropriate sears number, gave them all info. This was over six months ago. I haven’t heard from Sears since then, and have not received a repair kit.

Made Jan 11, 2013, sent to the company Jan 29, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 12, 2013

The product, in the report: Sears Craftsman air compressor model 919-168700 33 Gallon vertical

I have a Sears Craftsman air compressor model 919-168700. It was purchased 10/7/04. It has only been lightly used by myself, and always stored/used in a garage.

In early October 2012, I had it running in the garage, with the air hose out into my driveway. When I went back into the garage, there was smoke in the air and it smelled like a burning plastic/electrical smell. There was smoke actively pouring out from the compressor motor area. I immediately shut it off and unplugged it.

A few days later, I removed the plastic shroud over the motor, to see if a wire had gotten too close to a hot part of the motor. However this was not the case. There is a large capacitor in the motor housing that burned, and has a hole melted right through it. Some of the surrounding plastic also melted. Given the way it looks, I’m sure this could have ignited if left running a little longer.

I haven’t been sure what to do with it, since I assumed it was no longer under warranty. Ironically, in November 2012, I recently received a letter from Sears informing me of a recall on this compressor. It said they would send a kit to replace the plastic motor shroud. I called the telephone number on 11/19/12 regarding the recall notice, and explained what happened. The woman took my information and said that in my case they wouldn’t sent the replacement shroud, since the compressor was no longer working, but she would pass my information on to her superiors.

As of January 2013, I have yet to hear anything back about what they are going to do for me, and am beginning to doubt that I will.

The product, in the report: Air compressor

On Dec, 26,2011 I went to use my Sears air compressor model 919.165130. I pluged it in and turned it on, at that point the motor went on fire and the circuit breaker tripped. I statered on the internet to locate a new motor with no luck.I then came across a recall notice for the Sears air compresor 15 gallon tank, mine is a 30 gallon tank, the motors appear to be the same and are made by the same company, Devlbiss. The recall was for hazzard of a possible fire.Dated February 3,2011,release # 11-117. On Friday Dec.30,2011 I called Sear’s recall number and was then give another number for their repair center. The number I called was 727 845 6383 and I spoke to a man named [REDACTED] who said he would try and help me and would call me back. On 1/3/12 he called me back and said he had spoken to his boss and there was nothing they could do because my compressor wasn’t not listed on the recall, even though mine caught fire. He then gave me a name and a number to call and see what he could do. The man’s name was [REDACTED]. I called him on 1/3/12 and left a message about my problem as of 1/8/12 he hadn’t called me back. Today at 11:00 AM I called him back and left another message stating all I am looking for is a new motor for my compressor and I would do the repair myself. It is now 4:30 PM and still no return phone call back. Can you help me out.

Made Nov 17, 2011, sent to the company Nov 28, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 12, 2011

The product, in the report: air compressor, 30gallon, 1 HP, Oil lubricated

I bought an air compressor model # 921.153101, serial # 1151052 at Sears salem, oregon on Oct. 15, 2010, transaction # 3477-02119-109-8508. I called Sears tech rep [REDACTED] at 10AM on 11/14/2011 and reported that it has a safety problem. The chrome cover on the grounding plug broke off in the AC power outlet when I used it last in August, leaving a black insulated wire sticking out of the plug w/o grounding capability. I did not notice this until today, since the ground plug was still attached. [REDACTED] was totally unresponsive, saying that it is outside the warranty, and there was nothing that he could do about it.

This unit should be recalled with a safety problem before someone gets electrocuted.

Here is the email that I got from Sears Customer Service today; I am going to replace the defective plug myself because I don’t have time to take it into the service department:

The product, in the report: 1 horsepower Sears air compressor purchased in 1960 or 61. Note: I believe this Pop Off valve is still recently current.

The pressure switch on my old Sears Air Compressor failed. The compressor continued to run and built pressure to 200+ pounds. I noticed it when the belt started to squeal.

This unit is equipped with a Safety overpressure device (Pop Off Valve) that failed to vent the over pressure.

I removed the device. It was stuck shut, due to rust and contamination inside the body.

This device is installed vertically on the manifold with an opening in the top that allows moisture and contaminants to enter.

This device is, and has been for years, installed on multiple brands of consumer purchased air compressors.

The product, in the report: portable air compressor, 1.5 gallon, oil-free, 150psi, red and black..sold originally in kit form w/ accessories

I was using my five-month-old Sears Craftsman Air Compressor at home to air up my bicycle tires. As I was screwing the pressure regulator knob all the way to the left, the knob exploded and almost hit me in the face. Fortunately, my left hand deflected the parts that flew out of the unit. The unit made a loud HISS when the knob parts flew out with high velocity and force. A few parts of the machine flew out. I immediately turned off the unit.

I believe this product needs a safety recall.

I have also informed Channel 3 News in Sacramento, CA of this incident.
