  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made May 11, 2023, sent to the company May 18, 2023, published by CPSC Jun 9, 2023

The product, in the report: 30 gallon, portable, upright, single stage, belt drive, electric air compressor painted grey, model #PXCM301.

On 17 Jan 2018 we purchased a Porter-Cable, model # PXCM301, 30 Gal. air compressor for one of our departments. It was used as a stationary unit in the garage. 2 years 8 months later it developed a tank crack where one of the wheel brackets was welded on. Being that it was out of warranty by 8 months, the company still stood behind it because of the potential safety hazard should the tank rupture/explode due to the crack. On 12 Feb 2018 we purchased a 2nd identical model for another department. It to was mainly a stationary unit used by the maintenance techs. In March of 2023 the same thing happened to this unit. Upon contacting the company again, they stated that it was out of warranty and would not stand behind it. Seeing that this happened to 2 identical units it seems to be a faulty manufacturing process. This is serious if the tank would explode it could seriously injure or possibly kill someone.

The product, in the report: 6 Gal. Portable Air Compressor 18-Gauge Brad Nailer Combo Kit model# 12336

On Jan 11, 2016 my Family and I sustained major house fire at the below address. The Fire began, according to 3 different fire investigators, in the area of my several month old Porter-Cable air compressor models#12236. No other plugged items were within a 12 foot radius and a remnant of the compressor’s wire had evidence of arcing. I noted the machine had been warmer than normal before pumping bike tires on 1/9/2016 and accused the kids of playing with it. I was able to wake everyone and escape injuries that night, but some other family may not be as lucky.

This is my scenario that I will discuss with my insurance company. The air compressor began to spontaneously heat up over several days, melting the cord that I remember, was draped over the compressor motor. Once cord was fully melted, the arc occurred igniting the hot melted plastic on the unit. The unit burned high enough to burn the many boxes of Christmas decorations store in the attic directly above. Please add this information to any others you may have on the Porter-Cable Model #12236 and hopefully this is just a bad unit and isolated case.
