The product, in the report: Micro-Start lithium Ion Battery Auto jump starter and multi-function electronic equipment charger or power supply.
On August 3, 2018, at about 3:45 PM we were driving back from a hike in the Valles Caldera National Monument on High 4 near Los Alamos, N.M. when my wife heard a “pop” in the rear of our SUV and our vehicle immediately filled with dense white smoke. My wife yelled “stop the car and everybody get out”. I was driving and thought the vehicle had caught on fire. Our son, my wife and grandchildren got out of the stopped vehicle immediately. Our son raced to the back of the SUV and opened the rear door which released a cloud of white smoke and one of our dogs. The other had jumped over two rows of seats and out the front passenger door. Our son saw the smoking Micro-Start XP-10 on the floor in the back of the SUV and grabbed a strap on it and threw it from the vehicle to the ground. It was still smoking. We had pulled over on this two lane road through the forest and were fearful the Micro-Start XP-10 might start a fire. We called the fire department and asked for help. They and the police arrived to direct traffic and inspect our vehicle and the “Jump-Starter”. We had thrown it into our emptied cooler on ice packs and covered it with water. The firemen determined it was out and no longer a fire hazard then told us the smoke from the Lithium Ion battery was toxic. He suggested we monitor our dogs as they were close to the source longest and if they became sick we should seek care for them and ourselves. The firemen suggested we have the interior of the vehicle scrubbed out and replace the air conditioning unit air filters after we got home. We notified Antigravity Batteries by phone and left a V.M. about the episode and also sent an e-mail the night of August 3rd. They responded via e-mail August 6th and answered my phone call to the warranty desk. They e-mailed a Micro-Start Warranty Claim Form which we completed with all the requested information. We provided receipts for the expense of cleaning the SUV interior and the A/C Filter replacement. We have not shown any ill effects to the smoke nor have our dogs. The initial moving smoke filled vehicle and emergency exit from it could have resulted in more serious consequences.
