The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: RYOBY S651D 1/4 Sheet Sander
Today I used RYOBY model S651D 1/4 sheet sander, and suddenly the machine almost exploded in my hand. The dust bag was ejected as a bullet and plenty of small metal parts were ejected with it. I was EXTREMELY LUCKY because I was using this machine near my had, without any glasses. Fortunately, at the moment of breaking the machine was turned towards the wall and there was no any injury. Then I went to the RYOBI website and I found that the machine was recalled, but I was not aware of that. I purchased that machine in Home Depot many years ago but I used it only at home, and rather infrequently. The total operating time of that machine over the years was not greater than 2 hours. I think that the problem was in defective material.

The product, in the report: Yellow 5 inch battery operated Palm Sander
I was using a Ryobi battery operated palm Sander. The sander stopped vibrating as an internal mechanism got stuck. I put the sander down and did some other work. About 5 minutes later the sander began to smell like burning plastic, spew out smoke and likely caught fire internally. I say likely because I blew hard to where the smoke was coming and it stopped. I also immediately removed the battery. The sander was also very warm to the touch. About 3 minutes later the sander was again at room remperature.

The product, in the report: Ryobi orbital sander
I was using a Ryobi sander - model number S615D. About 10 seconds into light use, the power tool exploded sending metal and plastic material in my face and all over the room. It appears the motor blew up which caused this explosion. I needed to remove particles from my eye and face. This is a lightly used tool and it was being used to sand a drywall patch at the time indoors.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander dark blue and black body yellow on off buttons. egg shaped where you hold it. Square where the sand paper goes. 14,000/min 120V - 60Hz 2.0A
My name is [REDACTED] I am a 50 year old woman that has enjoyed wood work and power tools since I was in the 7th grade. I was just starting a project where the top of a walking stick needed to be leveled off. The walking stick was less than an arms length away at about shoulder height. I had lightly touched the area about 3 times for a collective of time of about 45 seconds. There was no indicators like smell or sound that a unexpected and violent explosion was about to happen. Then It happen the Ryobi exploded in my hand. I was dazed confused and in shock at what had happened. I set down the Ryobi sander and unplugged it. 3 sizable chunks of sharp shrapnel busted thru the left side and front of the body of the sander obliterating those sides. I left the garage and went into my home where I continued to be in shock for a while. once the shock started to subside I realized I had a horrible headache my ear was painful and had ringing and the right side of my face was swelling. I woke the next morning with a worse headache a low ring in my ear and added symptoms neck and shoulder pain. Early that afternoon I went to urgent care. The Dr confirmed that I have a concussion, checked my ears and thankfully the drums are not injured. She also noted my swelling and sore neck and shoulder. She advised this pain and swelling would subside in a week or more.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 inch hand sander
I was prepping a RYOBI S650D 1/4 SHEET SANDER, when it was plugged in and the sander started and within 2 seconds there was a large bang and pieces of metal exploded out of the sander through the plastic and were ejected across the room. Was able to yank out the poor cable cable - upon inspection it appeared that the metal fan had disintegrated into multiple pieces penetrating the plastic part of the sander.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander s651D AJ05 17034080 Blue with a white dust bag
I had just started to use my Ryobi sheet sander to restore an old desk. I plugged it in, it began to vibrate like it should and then within about 3 seconds it jolted to a stop and made a kind of “pieces going everywhere” noise. Dozen of small pieces fell out. I was just about to hand it to my 10 year old daughter. Thank goodness I didn’t. No one was injured.

Emergency room Made Mar 15, 2021, sent to the company Mar 25, 2021, published by CPSC Apr 8, 2021
The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander - handheld electric orbital sander
Today I was about to use my Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander. I plugged it in and then, holding it in front of me, turned on the power switch to make sure it was getting power. As soon as it started something hit my eye and I doubled over. I pulled off my glasses and covered my face. Then blood began to drip through my gloves as I went to the kitchen to get water, paper towels and ice. On my way I pulled the plug from the outlet as the sander was dancing around on the deck. I looked in a mirror and saw a deep gash over my right eye. Fortunately COVID has my wife at home as well and she drove me to the closest urgent care. They cleaned the wound, used 5 stitches to close it and now we will see how it heals and how bad a scar will be left behind. I am scared, in a bit of shock and feeling lucky that I had glasses (with plastic lenses) on and can still see. Upon returning home I looked at the unit trying to figure out what happened and I saw the side was missing as if exploded from the inside. I looked around and found my glasses minus the right lens, found the actual lens, a sharp, heavy metal piece that I assume did the damage and then many small plastic and metal fragments. I took pictures of all of these and started to research what to do in a case like this - clearly this is not how consumer tools are supposed to go bad. That is how I came upon this site and the report.

I have a Ryobi 5 in orbital sander. Mine just blew up on me when I was sanding. and it put two large cuts on the top of my head. Bleeding terrible. Unreal..this should never happen! I was hit by two large pieces of the metal of the inside of the unit. It tore thru the plastic frame. So much force. If an attorney is working on these cases I want to talk with him ASAP. Otherwise Ryobi needs to settle with me directly. I am in a lot of pain with two large gashes taken from the top of my forehead. Im hoping that someone can let me know how to handle this. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Ryobi ¼ Sheet Sander, S651D
Exactly as described in recall 11-216.
We were unaware of the recall and using the sander. There was a loud “bang”, the sander stopped working, and a small piece flew out. On examination, the circular metal fan/impeller had broken into 3 large pieces and at least a few small ones. Nobody was injured. The unit is unsafe to use and cannot be repaired. It had only been used 5-10 times over the years, and never heavily.

I was using my Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander #S651D to lightly sand a ceiling that had been spackled. I had been sanding for about 2 minutes total (intermittent...30 seconds/sanding session). Soon after restarting there was a loud noise and metal shards exploded through the plastic housing and across the room. LUCKILY no one was injured but only because the shrapnel was expelled away from me. I checked online and found that this power sander has a recall and similar ‘explosions’ have happened to many other people...some being seriously hurt.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander
I was using my Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander, model number S651D to sand down some cabinets we were building when about 30 seconds into the sanding, the thing exploded in my hand. Particles hit my body and face though lucky for us, nothing got into our eyes. The sander broke into about 30 little pieces at high speed. I doubt it could have done any serous injury but left scratches however if it would have happened closer to my face, the impact could definitely have taken out an eye.

I needed to sand a project. I own a Ryobi AJ 0642 sheet sander. I plugged it in after adding new sand paper. After less than two minutes, there was a large explosion in my hand and chucks of metal and plastic were sent in all directions!
This device is highly dangerous and I was not aware of the danger or given any opportunity to return it for a replacement.
Home Depot refused to replace it.
Ryobi text messaging was a waste of time and they refused to warranty the defect!

I changed the grit pad on the ryobi sander. Checked to make sure it was fastened securely. Set up my bird. Plugged it in. Held the small board with my left hand and pushed the button to start it in my right hand and it started normal then started clanking and banged and threw metal and plastic everywhere I unplugged it immediately and my left hand hurt from a metal blade type thing cutting my fingers. Nothing that would need stitches but hurt terribly and had to be bandaged. Still tender from the impact. Shards all over my great room from the top blowing apart. Looked up online and saw it had been recalled for exactly this reason.

I powered off & unplugged the unit and removed the bottom plate and the area where the bearing are located were jammed up with thin, twisted and jagged metal, as though a thin, wavy washer had disintegrated. I was able to avoid injury but there is a great danger for potential lacerations from this flying debris.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet palm sander
Today, I went to use my Ryobi sheet sander, model S651D and it literally exploded in my hand. Parts went flying as far as 10-15 feet from where I was standing. The paneling I tried to sand was gouged by a piece of the metal fan. I barely escaped injury due to the position I was in. I did some research after the fact and discovered that this product has been recalled. I was not aware of this fact and would have not used it if I had prior knowledge of this issue. I have several pictures taken after the sander blew up as proof of the incident. I am very fortunate my spouse was not sitting in the room where she was just prior to starting the sander or she would possibly been injured as well. This sander had never had a problem before and was never modified or abused in the past.

My Ryobi palm sander just blew apart in my hands. I took it out of the case, put the dust bag on it, put paper on it, plugged it in and turned it on. I turned it back off, got my board set, turned the sander on, and put it to the wood. The wood was sliding under the sander. I was moving the sander to my left hand when it exploded. The lower plastic out case blew off in a larger chunk that skimmed my fingers. Smaller pieces of the inner housing and metal inner wheel, blew up and flew all over my dining room. I have found Sharp shards and large, sharp chunks as far as 6 feet away. I was not seriously injured, but so easily could have been. The force and power behind the explosion was jolting.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4” Orbital Hand Sander MODEL NUMBER: Model # S652DK
Was using an Ryobi Orbital hand Sander for only two minutes when the plastic housing disintegrated on the left side of the unit, making a horrible rattling sound, and the internal metallic vibrating ring shattered into 3 pieces along with 15 pieces (that I found and picked up) and flew in different directions. Luckily for me, I only had a few minor cuts and one longer minor laceration on my adjacent left hand.

First aid Made Oct 27, 2013, sent to the company Nov 4, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 19, 2013
The product, in the report: Ryobi 1/4 sheet finish sander
My husband was sanding our covered deck column with the Ryobi 1/4 sheet sander and the metal fan part blew apart and out the side of the sander’s housing injuring his neck causing lacerations below the jaw line. He had only operated the sander for about 1 minute before it exploded. Previously it had only been used once before for about 15 minutes. Upon contacting Ryobi they told us about the current recall (which we did not know about). I looked the recall up online and it stated you wanted to know about more incidents if they happened.
Product was purchased at Home depot.

The product, in the report: Ryobi brand “5” Random Orbit Sander”
Ryobi brand Random orbit sander Model RS290, Serial Number AJ1116 42086
I purchased this tool from Home Depot on August 1, 2011. I used tool for the first time today (October 20, 2011) to sand the glossy surface off of walls in preparation to repaint. After using the tool for between 30 and 45 minutes, tool began smelling hot. I turned off the switch and smoke began coming out of the vent holes closest to the power switch. I immediately unplugged the power cord. The handle below the switch was very hot to the touch and smoke continued to come out of the vent holes for several more minutes. I am afraid to try to use tool again for fear of it starting a fire.

The product, in the report: Electric Ryobi orbital 1/4 sheet sander
I was sanding my kitchen wall with a Ryobi orbital sander, mod# S651D, 1/4 sheet sander when an internal gear or fan assembly shattered and numerous pieces of the internal mechanism came out through the front of the sander body. The noise was as loud as a gun going off and with enough force to imbed one piece in the ceiling. I had to go to the emergency room and had three stitches just above my left eye and impact trauma to my right eye with a possible scratch on the cornea.
