The product, in the report: Combination Sander 6” x 48” Belt 9” Disc Z Series model G1014Z. Manufactured in year 2004.

After using my Grizzly G1014Z sander it would not turn off using the safety paddle switch. The failure mode of not being able to turn the machine off is dangerous since you could get a digit or hair caught in it and not be able to stop it unless you could reach the cord to unplug it.

I notified Grizzly technical service today and informed them of the issue. I also informed them that I did not require a new switch from them because I had already ordered a replacement. The representative informed me that he would make a note of the issue. The representative did not request the failed part to investigate ask any questions to determine the cause of failure.

The product, in the report: G0739 Grizzly Oscillating Spindle Sander

We are a Church Scouting group. The spindle sander was purchased about 2.5 years ago. It has seen very limited use with only our group of Royal Rangers using it less than 30 hours. Most of the time the tool will sit for 8 months with out use. Then be used for a hour every few weeks and maybe 2 times a year be used off and on for 6 hours during a crafting event.

Sunday evening 3 of leaders were in the shop room working on some craft projects. One of the men used the sander for the first time that day. He used it shortly then went over to the band saw and was cutting some other things.

We have a Springfield, Missouri Fire Marshall as one of our Leaders and he said I smell smoke. I asked him if he was burning wood on the bandsaw he was using. We looked around and spotted the Grizzly spindle sander had some flame coming out just below the switch.

The 3 of us quickly unplugged the machine and tried to smother the flame and burning plastic and used some water in a bucket to put the fire out.

We removed the bottom of the sander and found that where the motor brushes contact the motor that part of the copper part had broken off and had caught the unit on fire.
