  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 22, 2026, sent to the company Feb 4, 2026, published by CPSC Feb 19, 2026

The product, in the report: Product: Schlage Smart Deadbolt (electronic/smart lock) Manufacturer: Allegion (Schlage) Product Type: Residential electronic deadbolt Black, rectangular design

Product: Schlage Smart Deadbolt (electronic/smart lock) Manufacturer: Allegion (Schlage) Product Type: Residential electronic deadbolt Location of Use: Front door of apartment residence

On 1/24/2025, the lock failed in a manner that prevented me from opening my front door from the inside to exit my apartment. The deadbolt would not fully retract, and the interior thumb-turn could not disengage the bolt. After emergency maintenance arrived, it was discovered that an internal screw had come loose and physically obstructed the deadbolt mechanism, preventing normal operation.

At the time of this failure, there were visible wildfires in the area, creating an emergency situation where rapid evacuation could have been required. I was unable to leave my apartment for approximately one hour until an emergency maintenance worker disassembled and repaired the lock. Had conditions worsened, I could have been trapped inside the unit.

The product, in the report: The product is the Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt (Model BE489WB), a connected smart lock designed for residential entry doors. It includes: 1. A touchscreen keypad exterior (typically in satin nickel, matte black, aged bronze, or bright chrome) 2. An internal motorized locking mechanism 3. Wi-Fi connectivity for use with the Schlage Home App, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant 4. A built-in alarm Approximate dimensions: 3 wide x 5 tall (keypad portion), with interior housing approx. 3 wide x 7 tall The smart lock is positioned as a keyless, connected deadbolt meant to allow remote locking/unlocking, smart home integration, and secure entry without a traditional house key. It replaces the standard deadbolt lock on a residential door. The specific unit I purchased was MATTE BLACK, used on a standard-sized apartment entry door, with no modifications to the product.

I purchased a Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt less than a year ago. The product has malfunctioned three separate times by locking me inside my apartment with no way to exit, even when I attempted to unlock it manually from the inside.

Each time, the internal locking mechanism jammed and would not respond to the keypad, app, or thumb turn. I was the only person in the apartment, and I was using the lock exactly as intended, installed on my entry door, for normal daily use.

I was unable to exit the property until I forcibly removed the smart lock from my door. If a fire, medical event, or emergency had occurred, I would have been trapped inside with no safe means of leaving. While no physical injury happened, the potential for injury or death was present and significant.

I reported the issue to the manufacturer, but instead of sending a full replacement, I was sent only a single mechanical deadbolt latch, which does not replace or repair the smart lock system.

I am reporting this because this product presents an entrapment hazard, especially for people living alone or without access to tools or outside assistance.

The product, in the report: Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt (with Century Trim in Satin Nickel) electronic lock

We have had a Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt (with Century Trim in Satin Nickel) electronic lock on our home’s front door since around January 2024. This allows us to use a code to enter our door (so we don’t have to carry a key). After a couple months, we precipitously had an issue with the electronics on the first lock (with no warning, it just stopped turning on, even when the batteries were replaced, but we could still manually turn the deadbolt, so it was a pain, but we could still get in and out of the door). We contacted Schlage and they sent us a replacement lock. It seemed like the new lock was working okay until today, again out of nowhere, we we unable to manually unlock the door. The deadbolt would not undo from the inside. All adults in the household tried. We were locked in. Thank goodness we have other doors in the household, and thank goodness my husband was present and knew how to uninstall the entire lock. Once he removed all electronic aspects of the lock and was down to just the deadbolt (with the hole for the locking mechanism open between the outside and the inside), he was able to manually unlock the door with a tool. If we have been trying to exit in an emergency, particularly a fire, we could have all died because of this serious malfunction. We are going to remove this electronic lock and return to a basic locking mechanism, but it’s important that this major safety concern be known.
