The product, in the report: Smart Nest Protect (smoke detector) manufactured 2021, lithium battery

I had a battery overheating issue with Googles Nest Protect product. I used the recommended [REDACTED] Lithium batteries and this morning I received a low battery followed by a dead battery notice and when I replaced them one of the batteries replaced was extremely hot (such that I couldnt touch it). I have read forums where this is a recurring issue.

Google nest chirped like a low battery alarm, upon opening the back to replace the batteries, one was burning hot. Probably about 180F. Happened completely out of nowhere and luckily we were awake to deal with it.

The product, in the report: Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide

I accidentally started a small fire in the kitchen while cooking. Nest Protect (CO/smoke alarm) in a calm voice stated that smoke was detected and alarm will sound. there was no alarm. I turned the fan on, opened the windows, and checked Nest Thermostat and Nest protect. Both were showing fire symbols. I checked my phone app for the Nest, and it also showed fire, and asked me if i want to silence the alarm. there was still no alarm. after about 5 minutes, the voice activated again, and repeated the message “smoke waas detected, alarm will sound, alarm will be loud”. again, there was complete silence after that.

The product, in the report: Not listed above. Smoke and CO2 detectors.

We have (2) Nest Protect products, one upstairs and one downstairs that are smoke and co2 alarms. Both were purchase at different times and one is 3 months old. Our stovetop is a glass stovetop with touch controls. The cat stood on it and turn on a burned to high that had a silicone hot plate on it and a bread knife with a wooden handle. My wife and I were outside when the cat did this. We came in the house and it was filled with smoke throughout. Neither of the 2 Nest Protects detected smoke nor were alarming. If we hadn’t come in when we did, the whole house could have burned down.

I contacted Nest Support the next day and were concerned to hear it and said they were escalating to their product safety group. After a week of no follow up I called today. I want to understand how 2 products could have failed. The support tech told me they were over a year old and may not work. What? Throw them away after a year? I have requested this again be escalated as the response is not acceptable.

If these are in fact not detecting smoke and are giving people a false sense of security, consumers need to be informed.

The product, in the report: Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector - Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Battery

The consumer states that there was a fire in her home however the smoke and carbon monoxide detector did not alert her or her family of said fire. The consumer notes that the smoke detector is also supposed to send an alert to 1) the consumer’s cell phone, 2) the consumer’s friend’s cell phone, and 3) the Manufacturer however not one party received the alert.

The consumer indicates that her mother inhaled smoke, which aggravated her condition as she has medical illnesses.

The consumer states that the fire was caused by a carpet that began smoldering and eventually caught fire. The consumer notes that the other smoke detectors in her home worked.

The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative she spoke with informed her that the smoke and CO detector must have had a faulty sensor, and so they would provide a replacement unit, which the consumer has since received.

The consumer plans on keeping her unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Nest Protect Smoke and CO2 dectector.

We purchased 4 Nest Protect Smoke & CO2 dectors in Jan. 2015 and installed them around Feb. 2015. In April 2015 at approxamately 7am in the morning the Nest in my son’s room reported there was smoke, started alarming, and couldn’t be “hushed” or stopped when there was no smoke, dust, or steam persent. I had to take the unit off the ceiling, unscrew the back cover and remove the batteries to get all alarms to stop. I return the unit to Nest and they sent me a new one. About 2 weeks later and at 12:30 AM in the morning, the Nest in my daughters room reported there was smoke, started alarming, and couldn’t be “hushed” or stopped when there was no smoke, dust, or steam persent. I again had to take the unit off the ceiling, unscrew the back cover and remove the batteries to get all alarms to stop. I call Nest and return that unit. Then about three days later the Nest in my son’s room went off again and couldn’t be stopped. NO SMOKE, DUST, or STREAM persent! I returned all units at this point and reserached the issue on the internet and found I am not alone in this issue.

The product, in the report: Nest Smoke Detector

Product: Nest smoke detector Model: NEST-97D8 Serial # 05CA02AC391300VG Mfg date: 12/01/2013

During the evening of April 28, 2014, in Palm Springs, CA, our Nest smoke detector set off multiple false alarms for smoke. We have a triple redundant smoke alarm system and none of the other types of detectors triggered. We also did not smell any smoke at all. The alarms triggered whether the windows were opened or closed with the AC on.

I called Nest customer support and they said they had other similar reports this evening. They told us to remove the smoke detector from the wall and power source and to remove the batteries. Nest is sending us a replacement detector.

Fortunately, we were at home at the time, as we are often away on travel. If we had not been home we would have had to call the fire department. False positives can also be hazardous if they occur when people are sleeping because people can be injured when responding to a false alarm when they are disoriented.

The product, in the report: Nest Smoke Detector

Our Nest smoke alarm has false alarm notified us of smoke-related danger a few times now. Most of the time, this is a notification on their telephone application that there is smoke in our home and when we arrive home, there is no smoke.

Most recently, however, we were awoken to the sound of the Nest alarm alerting us that there was an emergency level of smoke in the kitchen. There was no smoke or anything like it (we had been sleeping, no appliances were around) We were unable to silence or turn off the alarm without removing it from the ceiling and removing the battery altogether.

The product, in the report: Nest Protect Smoke & CO Alarms

9 smoke detectors installed in our house. Last night at midnight one started an alarm that there is smoke in the entryway. Then all nine alarms went off. The only way I could shut them up was to unplug them and open the back and take out the batteries. We’re lucky we could reach one that is very high in the garage ceiling. I was ready to smack it with a baseball bat.

No smoke. No fire. No sleep. Waaaaaay too much frustration with this system!!!!
