The product, in the report: Kidde Model 20SAR, smoke alarms

I have a Kidde Model 20SAR smoke detector which has failed in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night while everyone was sleeping, it failed into full alarm mode and the interconnected system triggered all other alarms in the residence to go off. Then after 2 times, it stopped. Then it went full alarm mode again on and off for 30 minutes until it was disconnected and the batteries replaced. This is the third time this has happened with these model detectors. 2 months ago I already replaced another detector in the system because of this issue. These false alarms result in nuisance alarms and cause consumers to pull down the detectors

Made Sep 4, 2026, sent to the company Sep 11, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 25, 2026

The product, in the report: Kidde Model 20SD10 battery powered photoelectric smoke alarm with sealed 10-year battery. Residential smoke alarm designed for ceiling or wall installation. The sealed battery is not user replaceable.

I am a residential rental property owner reporting a recurring pattern of premature failures involving Kidde Model 20SD10 sealed 10-year battery smoke alarms installed in multiple rental dwelling units.

Beginning in 2025, I purchased Kidde 20SD10 smoke alarms on multiple separate occasions through Home Depot for installation at different residential rental properties. My Home Depot Pro purchase history documents these purchases over an extended period. The alarms were therefore not all purchased in a single transaction or for installation in a single dwelling unit.

These alarms were purchased and installed as part of our compliance with updated HUD smoke alarm requirements that took effect December 29, 2024. These requirements significantly increased the number and placement of compliant smoke alarms required in affected HUD assisted dwelling units, including alarms inside each bedroom, within the required distance of bedroom doors and outside sleeping areas, and on each level of the dwelling. Battery operated alarms are required to have sealed 10-year batteries.

We replaced existing smoke alarms and installed additional Kidde 20SD10 alarms as necessary to comply with these requirements.

I have now had to replace approximately five Kidde Model 20SD10 alarms prematurely across multiple residential dwelling units. The recurring failure condition has been continuous or intermittent chirping indicating a low battery or malfunction condition. Because the 20SD10 contains a sealed, non-replaceable battery, the battery cannot simply be changed to correct the condition. The entire smoke alarm must be removed and replaced.

Some of these Kidde 20SD10 alarms have developed this same condition and required replacement within approximately six months of purchase and installation.

The two most recent failed alarms are particularly well documented. Both Kidde 20SD10 alarms were purchased together from Home Depot on June 21, 2025, and installed shortly thereafter in the same residential rental unit. Both have now developed the same chirping and low battery condition requiring replacement as of September 2026, approximately 14 and a half months after purchase. I have the Home Depot purchase record documenting this purchase and have retained the failed alarms.

These are not my first premature failures of this model. The approximately five failures have occurred across multiple residential dwelling units and involve alarms purchased through multiple Home Depot transactions. This experience is therefore not limited to one individual alarm, one installation location, or one purchase.

This is particularly concerning because the product packaging prominently identifies the product as a 10-Year Battery smoke alarm. Kidde also advertises the 20SD10 on its website as having a Worry-Free 10-Year Battery with no battery changes for 10 years. Kidde further states that the alarm is designed to beep to remind the owner that it is time to replace the alarm 10 years after it is powered.

My actual experience has been substantially different. I have experienced 20SD10 alarms requiring complete replacement in as little as approximately six months. The two most recent documented units developed the low battery or failure condition approximately 14 and a half months after purchase. I have now experienced approximately five premature failures of this model overall. This raises a serious concern regarding the reliability of these devices as life safety equipment.

The problem also does not appear to be unique to my experience. I located multiple publicly available consumer reports involving the exact Kidde 20SD10 model describing premature failures and similar problems.

On the Home Depot website, reviews for the exact Kidde 20SD10 include a July 2026 report from a consumer who stated that three alarms had experienced failure after approximately one year. Another June 2026 review reports that approximately seven alarms had been installed about a year earlier and one was already chirping and required replacement. Another consumer reported purchasing at least four alarms within a year and experiencing repeated unwanted alarms. An April 2026 review reports multiple alarms purchased in a multipack and separately becoming unreliable one by one in less than two years, with nuisance alarms and chirping. Another April 2026 review reports approximately one-year-old alarms repeatedly producing a smoke sensor error that could not be corrected by resetting the alarms. Kidde representatives publicly responded to these complaints, including stating in response to one multiple unit complaint that the reported performance was not expected.

The [REDACTED] website also contains complaints specifically identifying Kidde Model 20SD10. A May 2025 complaint reports a Model 20SD10 failing after only three weeks and difficulty obtaining support from Kidde. An April 2025 complaint reports three Model 20SD10 alarms with similar problems, including random alarms and premature failure at approximately two years.

I also located a consumer review originally posted through Kidde and reproduced on a major retailer website in which the consumer specifically identifies Model 20SD10 and reports false alarm problems after only approximately six months.

I am not representing these consumer reports as proof that every Kidde 20SD10 is defective. I am bringing them to CPSC attention because the number and similarity of independently reported premature problems involving the same model are concerning when compared with the repeated premature failures I have personally experienced across multiple dwelling units and purchases.

This creates a serious safety and housing compliance concern. Smoke alarms are life safety devices. Updated HUD requirements have resulted in landlords installing substantially more sealed 10-year alarms throughout affected dwelling units. When a required smoke alarm develops a failure or low battery condition, a property owner cannot simply leave it inoperative. It must be addressed promptly to maintain fire protection and housing compliance.

It has become extremely difficult to keep up with the repeated premature failures of devices that are specifically intended and marketed to provide long-term sealed battery smoke protection.

I have also experienced significant difficulty obtaining warranty replacements from Kidde. In one warranty claim involving two failed alarms, Kidde agreed to replace only one of the two alarms I initially claimed. Furthermore, even when Kidde approves a warranty replacement, I have experienced a wait approaching two months for the replacement to arrive.

This warranty process does not adequately address the immediate safety issue. A landlord cannot leave a required smoke alarm inoperative for weeks while waiting for a warranty determination or replacement. The failed alarm must be replaced immediately with another compliant device at additional expense.

No fire or physical injury has occurred to my knowledge. I am reporting this matter to CPSC because approximately five alarms of the same model have now failed prematurely across multiple residential dwelling units and multiple purchases. Some have required replacement within approximately six months of purchase and installation, and two additional documented units purchased June 21, 2025, required replacement approximately 14 and a half months later.

Given that these are life safety devices, the repeated nature of the failures, the 10-year battery representations associated with the product, and the existence of substantially similar premature failure reports involving the same model from other consumers, I believe this recurring pattern warrants CPSC review and investigation.

Eight Interconnected wireless Kidde smoke alarm/ CO2 detectors installed by prior owner in June 2025. Required by state of RI and only ones approved by the state. They keep going off in 2 of our 3 condo units. Dunns Corners RI Fire Marshall tells me they are no longer sold because they are defective. Kidde however has not issued a recall. We now have to pay again to replace 1 year old alarms that are supposed to have 10 year batteries . Looking to get a recall issued so we and probably thousands of people can use the refund to purchase new, safe , working alarms

The product, in the report: Kiddie Smoke Alarms model 20SA10

ive purchased Fire X brand smoke alarms for many years never had any issues. unfortunately the KIDDIE brand bought the FireX brand and changed the design or quality of components. ive been managing apartments for 15 years and always used ForeX brand. in the last twelve months 5 New Alarms have failed within 1-2 months. they start going off in the middle of the night or in the day even when no one is home. no appliances are on . no stoves, no heaters nothing. ive read online that there has been many complaints of these alarms triggering for no apparent reason. The company must be aware of the issue and havent issued a recall on the Hard wired smoke Alarms. i think its work looking into doe to the fact that there Alarms are designed to save lives. if they are defective and dont operate as designed to trigger when there is smoke in the room . its worthy to look into the issue.

The product, in the report: Smoke alarm

Two years ago I purchased 3 of the Kidde 20SA10 smoke alarms. They were advertised as having a 10-year battery, implying that one would not have to “mess” with the alarm for 10 years other than to test them. We have had hard-wired smoke alarms in our house since it was built 30 + years ago. On Septermer 24 at 4:30 in the morning we were awakened in a panic when the alarm in our bedroom started chirping loudly at the same level as the alarm itself. After a few minutes I determined that it was not the alarm for smoke. In consulting the instructions that came with the units, there was no indication of what might have caused the problem. It should be noted that our house has cathedral ceilings and the alarm is not reachable without a ladder. I called the help number given in the instructions and was told to “clean it”. This seemed ludicrous to me since we have had alarms for the past 30 years with no such requirement/problem. I eventually managed to bring in an 8ft ladder and reached the unit. I pushed the “reset” button and it went back to normal - green light status. This lasted for 2 days before it started up again. I contacted the number for assistance and was told they would not provide a new unit until I cleaned this unit. I then got a ladder back and looked for dust and found absolutely none. I used a canned air bottle and blew it out and encountered absolutely no dust. This model of smoke detector is sold with unacceptable, undisclosed conditions and should not be permitted on the market without significant upfront approved information. All though I am 87 years old I can, with difficulty and have the necessary ladder manage this situation. I wonder what would happen in other situations? Would the owner/tenant have to hire/pay someone to come in and do the dusting required all the time, having to listen to the ear-splitting chirping? ( We could not sleep in our bedroom until it was silenced. (It has only been 2 days since I did the dusting -standing on an 8 ft ladder)

The product, in the report: Kidde 10-year lithium-powered smoke detector with WiFi interconnection capability. Model #P4010CS-W

We have seven 10-year, lithium battery-powered smoke detectors that are WiFi interconnected and manufactured by Kidde that were installed in our home during a whole home renovation in May 2024. At least three times, during the middle of the night (always between 1 AM and 3 AM), one or more of the smoke detectors has gone off due to a false alarm. These false alarms could not be cleared easily because the faulty smoke detectors audibly reported that there was too much smoke to clear the device(s) - when, in fact, there was no fire and no smoke. When I attempted to get the faulty smoke detectors replaced, the manufacturer indicated that they couldn’t replace my faulty smoke detector with a similar model because they have discontinued the product. When I checked the manufacturer’s website, hundreds of consumers reported nearly the identical problem with repeated false alarms. Based on these experiences and the fact that they manufacturer has stopped making the faulty smoke detectors, it seems like it is a defective product that should be recalled because hundreds of people have already documented similar false alarms so it is (1) unclear that the Kidde smoke detectors work as described or (2) that consumers have discontinued using any smoke detectors given these false alarms, increasing the risk of indetected smoke and fire. The defective model number is P4010CS-W.

The product, in the report: Kidde P4010ACS Hardwired Photoelectric Smoke Alarm

The Kidde AC Hardwired Photoelectric Smoke Alarm (P4010ACS) has been found to be defective and unreliable. Consumers have reported frequent false alarms occurring at random intervals, ranging from several times per week to multiple times per day. These alarms trigger at all hours, despite there being no smoke, no fire, and proper installation in appropriate locations away from kitchens, bathrooms, or sources of humidity.

Even after thorough cleaning to remove dust, cobwebs, and insects, the issue persists. Numerous customer reviews on the manufacturers own website confirm this is not an isolated problem, but a widespread product failure.

This defect creates unnecessary stress and inconvenience for consumers, while undermining trust in the alarms ability to function during an actual emergency. Instead of providing safety, the P4010ACS delivers a false sense of security and repeated nuisance alarms, making it an unsafe and faulty product that requires immediate recall.

The product, in the report: Kidde Smoke Detector Model (upside down exclamation point) 9030, a white disc about 6 inches diameter, the outer housing, battery door are all the same White color, precluding the Consumer from seeing or reading the battery installation orientation UNDER the battery compartment lid. The Model Number leads with the ‘upside down !’ character.

I purchased a Kidde Model 9030, Smoke Detector from Wal Mart in Clinton, TN on the date of this Filing.

This device is a CRITICAL, LEGALLY MANDATED LIFE AND PROPERTY SAFETY DEVICE.

I am an Electronics Design and Manufacturing Engineer also an ISO 9000 Auditor including Nuclear safety and State / Federal / Industrial Regulatory experience.

The item is unsafe because, in general, it is not only possible, but likely the Consumer will incorrectly install the supplied 9V battery, resulting in the unit not operating without any further instruction or indication. The defects are as follows:

    1. No instruction, image etc in the included Instruction Sheet of:

    a) how to install the battery, b) no image, description of the correct orientation to correctly install, there are four (4) possible orientations, only one is correct,

    c) there is molded into the battery compartment cover a hidden, not-conspicuous and almost impossible to see, orientation diagram, raised white on a white background, which requires holding the device in a certain orientation to be able to read it,

d.) there is a conspicuous colored label in the bottom of the battery compartment warning “battery has been removed” but no such label or device to advise HOW to correctly install the battery e) no further warning, advice or annunciation of the battery being installed incorrectly resulting in non-operation.

This unit is powered by a 9-volt battery, apparently NEDA 1604, having positive and negative terminals of different diameters, the larger being Negative.

It is common in the past in such devices to have the two battery contacts (of the device, not battery) which are of corresponding different sizes, so the Consumer knows to orient the battery with the large terminal of the battery to the large terminal of the device, assuring correct installtion.

This device is manufactured with the device battery terminals:

1.) apparently the same size (width) 2.) with the Negative terminal of the device installed in a slot which is wider, implying it should receive the Positive terminal, the wider opening making the Negative device terminal appear narrower than the other, suggesting installing the battery in reverse, resulting in non-operation of the device.

AS a Design Engineer, it is EASY and INEXPENSIVE to add an annunciator circuit to sound alarm if the battery is installed backwards, a couple steering diodes and a buzzer or tone emitter.

I called the Customer Serice number for Kidde (US I assume) 800-963-8442 and explained this defective unit to a Rep. His response was :

“this should be referred to Engineering, but we (Kidde) expect the Consumer to correctly install the battery.”

This is a DELIBERATELY DECEPTIVE AND EVASIVE STATEMENT as it is the Kidde Corps responsibility to FIRST DOCUMENT THE CORRECT INSTALLATION TO THE CONSUMER.

This response is called “Blaming the Victim” i.e. Corporate Coverup.

Correctly installed Smoke/Fire detectors are LEGALLY MANDATED in the US.

The product, in the report: Specifics - Fire Alarm (looks as a fire alarm would) - Kidde Model # 20SD10 - Made in China - issue no. 0086931 - battery model (10 year alarm - sealed with no serviceable parts)

Recently installed fire alarms throughout our home. They were the Kidde model# 20SD10. Both units were randomly going off for no cause - after removing from the wall, Kidde stated to use “compressed air” on the unit (??) and to wait 24-hours. After failed efforts, testing was done on a 3rd unit to see if it even worked and while it was inside a smoke filled box, the alarm did not trigger - yet, it would randomly go off the same as the others. So three defective units. Company Support via their toll-free line was mostly unhelpful until the 3rd call in - at which point they agreed to send out replacements. With everything, and the fact that they DID NOT detect the smoke in a controlled test (I am not certified or licensed to test the units) it seems that there are other problems with these units and the company acted as if it was no big deal. This is why I wanted to report the matter to the governing board for full review, as it may help save a life. While no injury (other than my nerves, back, and toes from jumping and stumbling out of bed as if there were a fire) were experienced, I do feel as if the products are unsafe and can stated without a doubt that I believe the company was being dismissive to my reports.

The product, in the report: Photoelectric smoke alarm with voice

Kidde Model P4010ACS fire alarms repeatedly produce false alarms when no fire or smoke is present, most commonly in the middle of the night. The only way to make them stop doing this is to disconnect and disable them. This has the effect of desensitizing people to fire alarms. I have experienced this with two different units, and reviews of the product indicate that it is very common for this to happen.

This is regarding Kidde smoke detector and Kidde combination CO/smoke detector. These products have had 6 false alarms in our home over 4 weeks at all hours of the day and night. The incidents involved at least 5 different units each time an alarm was set off. One was so severe that we could not disable and had to call the fire department. We live with a severely disabled 92-year-old who had to be taken out of bed (which is extremely difficult) and evacuated outside. This caused our entire family unnecessary emotional distress. The specific model numbers are P4010ACSCO (combination) and P4010ACS (smoke alarm). We have called Kidde Customer Service multiple times and did everything as instructed. The reviews on their website shows very similar experiences. These models should be investigated.

I have recently installed 4 new (under manufacter warranty replacment Kidde P4010ACS photo electric smoke dectectors. They were due to the “failing” units originially installed Kidde units with newer updated model available. That was on 10/31/2023. Since then two different “false” alarms have been triggered. With two new replacement units being sent to “replace” them at this point. Concerning with reviews on the Kidde webiste as well as the noted CPSC complaints seen on this specific models performance issues and “false” alarms “audible” FIRE FIRE !!!! as part of home security systems too [REDACTED] had sent a fire department on site due to the triggering and “alarm” monitoring at home. This may be a larger problem with this model in particular. Hoping the manufaturing date codes and country of origin may help others on this as well. Have noted and will continue to monitor now with two complaints to Kidde directly #[REDACTED] on 2/14/24 and on 3/16/24 [REDACTED] (last one to replace two potentially defective units) as well as possilbe replacement with another model that is not prone to these “false” alarm concerns model #P4010ACS-WF that noted a very high rating of satisfaction 4.5+ versus their 1.0 star rating on the currently installed units in my home P4010ACS with many “false” alarm reportings on their site as well as this site CPSC.gov... a very concerning safety issue.

The smoke alarm was installed according to the instructions. They were tested and continued to create false alarms at all hours of the night and day. No injuries occurred however we do not take the activation of a smoke alarm as we should.

The product, in the report: Kidde 120 VAC wired ionization smoke detector with 10 year battery

I purchased 7 Kidde smoke detectors and they have a constant problem of false alarms. They are model P4010ACS which are wired and have a permanent battery. They first starting false alarming within two months of being installed. After it happened 3 or 4 times, I started removing the offending detector, thinking that there was a simple defective one. After removing 4 of them it seemed to be a device wide problem and I replaced them with another brand and no longer have false alarms. In addition to the false alarms, we would get periodic false alarms where we would get a smoke indication (3 beeps) but only one time, then they would go silent. Since I replaced them, I have them on the floor in my office, and since they have a 10-year battery they are still active, and still provide both actual false alarms and the short alarm. It is always only one alarming even though they are all next to each other. I have made a few inactive as they seemed to be the worst offenders. There were no injuries experienced, (other than to my checkbook for replacing them) but they certainly have the potential to cause loss of life if one were to ignore them because of the number of false alarms, or remove them to eliminate the false alarms. Also, because of the capricious nature of the alarms, one would have to wonder about their resonse in an actual fire.

The product, in the report: Home smoke C/O alarm goes off on high C/O on a 30 second loss of 120 volts with a good battery backup in it.

Smoke/CO alarm with a good battery backup indicates high C/O on a momentary loss of power My wife, home alone and sleeping woke up to the alarm screaming high C/O at 1:15 am. Not just beeping but actually saying high C/O. In a panic trying to find out the problem and round up the pets she hears the whole house generator running. Not knowing the whole neighborhood is without electric. It takes less than 30 seconds from loss to the generator picking up the whole house. She now thinks it might be from the generator and is getting out of the house with the 3 cats and 2 dogs. She calls me and I am on my way home less than 10 minutes away. I tell her I have no notifications from our [REDACTED] alarm other than loss of power. I get home to the 3 interconnected alarms blaring and I try to silence them. I can’t get them down off the ceiling due to a tamper resistant design( what a great feature on a residential ceiling mounted device). I try to [REDACTED] it on Kidde’s website only to find I need to enter the model number that can’t be seen until you get it down off the ceiling. I contacted Kidde and there suggested “repair” was to unplug it and plug it back in. The Kidde rep. stated this “should” fix it and if not next time it does this they will replace it. I said there will not be a next time and I will be replacing all 3 with another brand not made by Kidde. My electric had been off a few times prior to this with no false alarm. As far as the repair of unplugging and then plugging them back in. That is not a repair, that’s a fluke. Rebooting your computer is one thing I don’t want to have to reboot my smoke alarms. I bought what I thought was a name brand product only to have to replace it in a year and a half. The product should not go into a specific incorrect alarm condition over a condition it’s not even supposed to detect. It had a good battery backup. This is like your car telling you its overheating when the tire pressure is low in one of the tires. I have zero faith in any Kidde product going forward.

The product, in the report: Kidde Smoke Alarm / wireless interconnected. Model P4010DCS-W 10 Year Worry-Free Sealed Battery Smoke Detector with Intelligent and Wire-Free Voice Interconnect (2-Pack)

We bought 6 of these alarms in July 2023 in 5 months have had 5 false alarms. It is a dangerous alarm because everyone has started to assume it is a false alarm when they go off. Our neighbors checked on use the first two times but now they assume it is false. Have been woken up and had to come home from work. They go off when no one is cooking and/or is home. I have tried all the suggestions for placement and dust regularly and am still having issues. We have the correct placement for all alarms. I do like the way when one alarm goes off the others go off which is nice downstairs and our ADU. Since we get so many false alarms it has become unsafe. The first time I called customer service I was on hold for 30 mins and it took 1 hour to get issue resolved. They can only send a replacement and admit that these alarms have issues with being too sensitive. Products like this are why people disable their fire alarms. Nuisance fire alarms like these present big safety issues because frequent false alarms desensitize occupants. If occupants grow accustomed to hearing an alarm without a fire it seriously slows the response time to the alarm. This creates a dangerous situation in the case of a real emergency that can result in significant risk to life. These alarms should be recalled. They have very bad reviews from customers due to this issue.

I have five smoke detectors in my house. After 13 years, I replaced them all with a Kidde brand detector. After a couple of months, I received a recall notice from Kidde. They eventually replaced them with a different model. Soon after I installed the new ones, I started to get false alarms. I had them all wired together so the false alarms reverberated throughout the entire house and it was impossible to know which one had falsely triggered. I then adjusted the wiring on each one so that they would not all trigger if one triggered. Over the next year or so, each one would falsely alarm. As each one would give a false alarm, I pulled it. I was left with just one fire detector and that one alarmed the other night, now I have no working detectors. I’ve called Kidde twice (once today) and have yet to have a confirmation that they will replace them even though they have a 10 year warranty. There is certainly a flaw in this model.

I am the president of our small condo association (4 units). On Oct. 4, 2021 we had our alarms/smoke detectors completely replaced in the hallways and basement for a total of 6 in the hallways and 2 smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Since that time I’ve had to replace four of the six hallway units. On Aug. 24, I called the electrician to come and clean and check the units to make sure they were properly installed and that there wasn’t anything I’d been missing in re-installing and resetting as directed. There wasn’t. The electricians cleaned and reset the system. Less than a week later, the system has gone off at least seven more times. I’m replacing the fifth unit today. Kidde has assured me they are sending replacement units, but I’m unsure this will work. I work at home as do others in the building. The alarms go off in the middle of the night, in the middle of calls, whenever. At roughly $60 apiece and a 10-year warranty, this shouldn’t be happening. The unit is Model P4010ACS manufactured May 21, 2021 according to the back label. Once the alarms go off with such regularity, the likelihood of people paying attention to a real alarm/emergency/fire diminishes.

The product, in the report: The smoke detector is a Kidde model i9010, date Oct 16, 2020. They were bought in a 2 pack with a carbon monoxide detector at Home Depot.

In August 2021 we had a power outage and had our Kidde carbon monoxide detector near the generator at the time. The carbon monoxide detector showed carbon levels going up, but did not sound an alarm. About 3 weeks later, our house caught on fire. My husband was in the front of the house, trying to put out the fire with a hose. None of the Kidde fire detectors sounded an alarm either.

The product, in the report: Smoke alarms

Caller stated that the smoke alarms goes off constantly to the point that her spouse had to take out the batteries. She stated that when it is humid and the windows are open the alarms goes off.

Caller stated that the manufacturer was not contacted and that the alarms are required by the building to have and it defeats the purpose if they can not use them in the manner they were meant for.

Caller feels that these smoke alarms are unsafe and should be reported.

    Smoke detector malfunction complaint

We have 1O Kidde smoke detector fire alarms, one installed on the ceiling of every room of the house, as required by the building inspector in our town. They are battery powered and radio-connected, so that when one alarm sounds, they all go off at once. We have never had a fire, but we have often had the smoke detectors go off during the night, probably because that is when the air cools to near the dew point. It ruins our sleep and scares us half to death, not to mention endangering our hearing. It’s usually around 3 or 4 AM, and the only way to stop them from making their deafening screech is to take the batteries out of all of them. This must be a common problem, because there is an internet page about it, as I discovered by [REDACTED] smoke detectors false alarms when air is humid.

We have put up with this happening two or three times a summer for years, but I finally reached a breaking point when the detectors went off twice during one night (early morning, actually, at 3 :30 AM and again at 4 AM}. Then they went off again the following afternoon at 2 PM, when it was raining outdoors. We could not live with this, so my husband got a ladder and took out all the batteries.

The number of malfunctions we have experienced is unacceptable for a product that is required. It is unreasonable to expect us to keep our windows closed at hight. The only way to live with them is to disable them but disabling them is not a satisfactory solution.

The product, in the report: Kidde RF-SM-ACDC wireless and hardwired interconnected smoke detector.

Kidde wireless smoke detector RF-SM-ACDC can get set off in a lightning storm triggering all the alarms. After that it cannot be hushed or reset. Removing the battery for hours doesn’t solve the issue. It goes into alarm mode the moment the battery is re-inserted. This has happened with two different RF-SM-ACDC units. No electrical power flicker or surge occurred. Multiple other Kidde hard wired smoke detectors still operate properly. First unit it happened with was in July 2020.

The product, in the report: Kidde P4010ACS 10 Year Worry-Free Hardwired Smoke Detector with Voice Alarm and Ambient Light Ring

Kidde hardwired P4010ACS units are producing false alarms once or twice a month. This makes the unit unusable and creates a false sense of operability. This unit should be discontinued and recalled.

I think there is great risk to occupants to a home with a trust in a device to provide accurate alarm information. When a device as this continues to provide false alarms, residents or guests will disable them, providing no protection from the notification of a fire or carbon monoxide emergency.

The product, in the report: Kidde P4010ACS hard-wired smoke alarm Model P4010ACS

I have six Kidde P4010ACS smoke alarms installed in my house. Kidde sent these to me as a replacement for a recalled version I had previously purchased. That alarm was recalled because they experienced a high rate of false alarms. I installed these replacement alarms back in May 2021.

At 1:15am last night all detectors in my house started screaming FIRE! FIRE! My kids freaked out, everyone ran downstairs, and then after realizing there was no smoke in the house I started checking each alarm. I disconnected one in a bedroom which was rapidly flashing red/green and silenced it, at which point all the other alarms finally stopped. This faulty unit immediately went to an amber/red/pause flashing sequence, which the back of the unit indicates either means “faulty alarm, low battery, or end of unit life”.

The unit was silent (but disconnected) the rest of the night. This morning when I picked it up it started screaming FIRE! FIRE! again, and when I tried to silence it, the unit said “CANNOT SILENCE, TOO MUCH SMOKE”. I then broke the safety tab and permanently disabled the alarm and battery (which is built in and not removable).

My youngest child was in tears last night once this ordeal was over.

But after showing it (the report) to two other household members we decided maybe it should be included. I have 6 of the Kidde Model i12040 smoke detectors. All less than a year old. We have three installed, and three back-ups. Twice in the past year we have had three rooms fill with smoke, and not once did any of the alarms sound. Once was from an [REDACTED] that was set-up on the range top. It was pushed back and bumped a burner knob causing the burner to turn on. The room were pretty full of black smoke from melted plastic. No alarm! The next time a small basket of some sort had ignited ( I beleive from a candle) again, smoke filled rooms, no alarm!

The product, in the report: Kidde Ten Year Smoke Alarm Model P3010L Living Area

in December 2019 I purchased and installed four Kidde model P3010L 10 year Living Area smoke alarms. Within three weeks, one of these alarms (date of manufacture 2019, Aug. 20) went off in the middle of the night and would not stop. There was no smoke or fire present. I got out a ladder and took the alarm down and disabled it per the manufacturer’s directions. No dirt or insect presence was seen. This unit was returned to Home Depot and replaced. Over the next month, the remaining three original smoke detectors and the replacement detector (manufacture date 2020 Jan 14) all went off during the night, were disabled and returned to Home Depot for replacement. By the end of March, three more of the replacements failed during the night and were disabled. I finally gave up on this product and replaced all four units with Code One model i9070 battery operated smoke alarms. There have been no false alarms from the i9070 smoke alarms in the four months since they were installed. I notified Kidde about the problems with the P3010L alarms and asked for a refund or gift card but their response was that they will replace defective products but they do not give refunds. Why would I want to replace these with more of the same defective product? My concern is that this product is dangerous because it generates many false alarms. It is also dangerous to the consumer when you have to climb a ladder in the middle of the night just to silence the alarm. I have read many product reviews and talked with contractors and it has become very clear that I am not the only one having a problem. Just look at Amazon reviews for some examples. I would expect that if Kidde would share product return information from retailers and consumers with your agency, the data would show an unreasonable percentage of this product was or still is defective. It is a good idea to have a product that has no battery to change and will last 10 years, but only if it works. This product does not work as advertised and is not safe

My home has 5 KN-COSM-IB alarms.

yesterday I heard 1 low battery alert. last night when sleeping fire-fire alerts sounded. I ran down to the first floor to the detector I heard earlier and unplugged it from the electric and removed the battery. Just before I removed the battery a low battery alert sounded. My plan was to get a new battery in later during the daytime. an hour later a second alarm sounded, this time it was the detector outside of my bedroom door. Again when unplugged from the electric a low battery alert sounded. 20 minutes a third detector started to chirp a single chirp, I removed this alarm as well.

today I came crossed the recall for these detectors.

I am confused about the type of alerts that sounded as I can not find any information where this was the case. I am concerned about these devices because of this recall.

please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have several Kidde P4010 series smoke (and smoke/CO) alarms in our home. One in each bedroom, one outside each bedroom, and in common spaces on all floors. We have had this issue with both wired and battery-operated devices, as well as with both smoke-only and smoke/CO combination devices.

Since we purchased these, and installed them carefully according to the manual, we have had a steady stream of false alarms as well as the devices losing communication with each other.

The false alarms are dangerous because they can desensitize occupants to the alarm and cause them to be ignored. Some people might disconnect or remove the detectors.

The failure of the wireless interconnect is dangerous because we rely on interconnection to alert occupants in other parts of the home of an issue. If the interconnect is unreliable, sleeping occupants of a bedroom may not know of an issue in another part of the structure.

Regarding false alarms, we have had the false alarms from units in multiple locations in our home, and the units are installed according to the manual. There are no obvious explanations for the nuisance alarms.

Regarding the interconnect failure, we have followed the instructions regarding antenna orientation and coordinator selection from KIdde. But we even have had a unit 5 feet (as well as 10, 15..) feet from the coordinator stop working. There are no obvious factors at play, and we are hardly pushing the boundary with these specific units.

We have worked with Kidde support to try to resolve the issue but it has continued. In reviewing online reviews of the product, we see many people with the same issue.

About 4:15 am our Kidde smoke alarms alarmed for about 1second, stopped, and then alarmed again for about 1 second. I inspected the house and there were no apparent fires or smoke. I then located the unit that initiated the alarm by seeing the red alarm lamp that went on and off periodically. I removed the alarm and inspected it. It was unusually warm to the touch and had the smell of electronics that was hot. I recognized the smell because I have an extensive background in electronics. It is Kidde model i12080A. Date of manufacturer June 21, 2017. It was install in my home in September of 2017. I have the product in hand and can turn it over to the CPSC if needed.

From: [REDACTED] To: [REDACTED] Cc: [REDACTED] Subject: 5 smoke alarms did not sound during fire/smoke incident Date: Thursday, February 14, 2019 10:33:47 AM

Could you please enter this incident into CPSC360? It was reported to me by [REDACTED] Bureau of Fire Services. He is maintaining all 5 smoke alarms until further notice.

Incident: On 01/12/19 around 4:00pm, a husband and wife left a pot of chili on the stove top on low/simmer. When they returned to the house around 6:20pm, they smelled smoke in their garage. When they opened the garage door into their home, the condo was filled with smoke. None of their 5 ionization, interconnected smoke alarms were sounding. They removed the burnt pot of chili and observed that the stove was somehow on the high setting. The stove was shut off and windows were opened so the smoke could dissipate. Injury was avoided. The fire official collected the 5 smoke alarms for further evaluation. He tested all 5 units with the test button and they sounded. The closest smoke alarm was about 15 feet away from the stove.

Consumer:[REDACTED] Product: 5 Kidde interconnected, ionization smoke alarms. 2 of the smoke alarms are a Combination Smoke/CO Alarm. Model # is unknown at this time, date of mnf: 03/23/16 3 of the alarms are Kidde, Fire X-1, Model: I4618A, date of mnf: 03/29/16. If this is assigned, please assign this to me. Thanks, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kidde 120V AC/DC Wire-in Smoke Alarm Battery Backup Model i12040

My wife noticed that there was a brown spot on the side of one of white smoke alarms on the ceiling. It looked like the plastic was starting to burn. I pulled the smoke alarm apart and found that a large resistor, labeled D7 on the circuit board, was where the heat was originating from. The green circuit board was black covering a couple square inches of circuit board around it. I then went and checked the other 13 smoke alarms in the house and 12 had similar brown spots on the exterior white plastic. One had just slightly discolored plastic (barely noticeable) and I opened it up too and found the circuit board also blackened around that same resistor, but in this case the resistor looked very different. It was a different brand, but similar size to the orignal one. I found that the build date of this smoke alarm was 4/30/2010 whereas the original one I had looked at had a build date was 5/5/2009.

These smoke alarms are Kidde brand, model i12040, with build dates of 5/5/2009 and 4/30/2010 (I checked all 14 smoke alarms). Upon removal they do feel hot on their rear side (goes against the ceiling) in the location of where the resistor is inside.

I contacted Kidde, sent them pictures of the brown spots on all of the smoke alarms along with detailed pictures showing the resistor and both sides of the circuit board inside. A product support representative by the name of [REDACTED], forwarded the info to an engineer there who responded, “The photos you send are typical for alarms that have been in service for 8 to 10 years. The power supply in the smoke alarm does generate some heat which will discolor the circuit board and possibly the plastic over time. This is a normal occurrence and not a design concern and does not affect the operation of the alarm.”

My concern is that this issue may be a fire hazard as I can’t imagine any properly designed circuit board which gets hot enough to char the circuit board and cause burn marks on the plastic housing.

I can send pictures if provided an email address or repository to send them to.

The product, in the report: KIDDE Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Model # KN-COSMXTR-BA

I purchased a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm around June 2017, it was working fine for about a year, until the alarm started going off for no reason. The model is KN-COSMXTR-BA made by KIDDE, it was purchased at a local Home Depot. I changed the batteries, even though I did not get a low battery warning from the device. A couple of weeks later, the alarm started going off again for no reason, this time I thought perhaps it is the humidity in the apartment? I took the batteries out again, and used compressed air to remove any dust that may be impacting the sensors, after replacing the batteries back into the device, I pressed the Test Button, the alarm would just sound, and the device failed the Test cycle of the unit. I contacted KIDDE and explained the issue to them, the sent a replacement unit, free of charge, this time when I put the batteries in the new replacement unit, the unit made a few chirping sound, but also failed the Test Cycle. I contacted the manufacture again, and they are going to send another replacement unit. As concerned parent with 2 young toddlers, I think something terrible may happen to other consumer who have purchased this model.

Defective smoke alarm which goes off randomly. Kidde model PI9010 manufactured 12/6/2016. I purchased it on 11/4/2017 at Walmart.com. A new battery does not solve the problem. After waiting on hold for 25 minutes an arrogant rep told me that it was my choice whether to buy someone else’s products but they would not replace it unless I sent the old one in. They certainly know that it is not worth doing so at a cost of $16. My accusation is that the basic design is defective. With the long hold times and poor customer service this is a company that does not deserve to be in business.

I purchased a total of 8 kidde smoke alarms (Model P4010DCS-W) and Smoke/CO combo alarms (ModelP4010DCSCO-W) and installed them between 1/28/18 and 2/2/2018. These are 10yr alarms with wire-free interconnect. Since installation, I have had 3 alarms with batteries that failed. Also, the alarms regularly disconnect from each other and no longer alarm as a network. There is no warning or signal when an alarm disconnects. The first failed within 60 days. The second through fourth have failed within 5 months.

I now have to test almost daily to ensure the alarms are powered. The “end of life” or “dead battery” or other failure alerts do not work or are non-existent.

Kidde has replaced two of the alarms (after nearly 10 weeks of waiting), but has not acknowledged that there is a problem with their equipment. I was told they are a new technology and all of the bugs aren’t worked out yet. They did not assure me that these actually work and will function in an emergency.

The Smoke Alarm failed to sound the alarm when it was tested. Since it is a 10 year alarm I decided it would be best to inform the manufacturer about the failed alarm.

I saw this alarm model number i9010 is part of a voluntary recall. After inspection for the yellow jacket and manufacturing date on the alarm it was concluded that this particular alarm was not part of the recall but yet the alarm is NOT working.

So I chose to contact Kidde about the alarm via e-mail to have things documented. 17 days later they responded with such incompetence, requesting for me to test the alarm and e-mail them back. So I decided to report the incident here instead due to their slow and ignorant response.

I feel Kidde’s customer service has shown no regard for life.

Reporting on Kidde ionization smoke alarm model i12010S Four of these were installed May 2017. Two have failed, the most recent occurrence 5/24/18. That’s a 50% failure rate. In both cases, false reports of fire occurred despite the fact that the alarms have been well maintained by vacuuming and periodic application of canned air as per manufacturer. This is a 10 year Lithium battery backup model as well as being AC powered. In both cases the manufacturing date is 2016 Nov. 10. The house installed in is clean, well ventilated, and the alarms are properly installed following mfg recommendations. Environmentally, Relative Humidity reported by the weather service was at 68% with a house temperature noted at 67 degrees F. I’d like to stress again, a 50% failure rate is absolutely unacceptable for a product designed to provide fire safety!

The product, in the report: Kidde (KN-COSM-IB) Hardwired Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm

We had seven Kidde talking smoke/carbon monoxide detectors (KN-COSM-IB) in our home (manufactured in November 2010), and none of the smoke detectors work. We had a small fire in the kitchen, and none of the detectors triggered or sounded the alarm. It seems that they were/are not working, but we have fresh batteries in them, and when you press the test/reset they beep. But they don’t seem to detect smoke or carbon monoxide, and don’t seem to work/function properly.

We took them back to Home Depot (in Homers Glen) and then took them to Menards (in Homer Glen, IL) and they would not take them back or exchange them (under the recall). We’re extremely unhappy that Kidde made smoke/carbon monoxide detectors that don’t function or work properly, and the vendors have failed to replace/exchange them.

In 2015, I had a professional electrician install 2 new hardwired smoke/fire detectors. They are: KIDDE Dual Sensor Smoke & Fire hardwired detectors Model #PI2010. Last evening, I had a small, but smoky, incident in my kitchen - burning food on the stove. I was in another room, unaware of the problem. Neither of the detectors worked, no alarm. The smoke smell is quite evident today. I thank God I was not asleep and was able to smell the smoke. I contacted KIDDE today. This model, apparently, HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. KIDDE is sending me replacement detectors, free of charge. Since the ramifications of this apparent product defect are so serious, I am notifying your agency as well. I hope you are developing an official record of any reported incidents of this model. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

at 6:00 am this morning the Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm on the third floor went off. It went off three times within a half hour. I vacuumed the unit because I’d had the windows open earlier in the week and there was a lot of pollen in the air. Later in the day it went off again. At 4:00pm it went off again and I called my electrician, who made the installation two years ago. A short time later it went off again and continued beeping and alerting “fire” for over a half hour. My electrician showed up and he removed the outer twist of casing from the unit and pushed the hush button. He advised that I should inquire if there was a recall on this model. I did.

The product, in the report: Kidde combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector, model # KN-COSM-IB manufacturer date Dec. 14, 2009

We are a federally funded housing authority using a Kidde safety product, a combination detector model # KN-COSM-IB which has been recalled by the manufacturer. On April 11 one of our tenants informed maintenance of a low battery indication in their apartment, maintenance staff changed out the battery and assumed everything was back to normal. As the day progressed we received many more instances of the low battery indication so maintenance supervisor called the Kidde support line to see what may be happening and was informed of a recall on this model detector. Housing authority staff changed out all detectors of this model after realizing that upon changing out the battery and resetting detector it rendered it no longer function able. Kidde is offering replacement of the detectors discounted at 50%. Due to the safety of our residents and property we could not leave the non functioning detectors so we began replacement immediately. We have replaced approximately 80 detectors to date and have associated costs of $3,200. We do not need to purchase any more detectors since we have already had to replace, so the discounted alarms they are offering are essentially useless. I would like to see Kidde offer reimbursement for the expenses of the replacement detectors. I feel they are not realizing the seriousness of this problem and are not backing the product recall.

The smoke alarm is manufactured by Kidde, model P3010H, a photoelectric smoke alarm with a 10-year lithium battery. According to the label, it was manufactured July 5, 2014. I purchased it from a large retailer and installed it in March, 2016.

Not quite one year after activation, the alarm sounded in the middle of the night. The “hush” button did not function as advertised. The detector was removed to another room and stopped sounding.

Today, it sounded again in the middle of the night (of course!), the “hush” button had no effect, and was removed to another room, where it stopped. Two hours later, while on a table in another room, it sounded again. No response from the hush button.

In each instance, none of the other five alarms in my home sounded (one is an identical model). I had a 35-year career in the fire service, and now six more years as a licensed and certified expert witness in fire investigation, and I’m pretty confidant that there were no products of combustion in the home during any of these alarm activations.

A quick check on the internet found numerous instances of consumers complaining of the same issues with this model alarm. No information about recalls was found.

Here is my concern: consumers dealing with this same issue might choose to deactivate or discard their smoke alarms as a false alarm is unsettling and annoying. If they do this, they will no longer have the protection of smoke detection in their homes. Over my fire service career I took part in investigating more than 60 fatalities from fire, and it is well known that the single most important thing that any of us can do to prevent a fire death is to have a working smoke alarm in our homes.

Additionally, if there is an issue with false alarms, I have no confidence that the detector will actually detect smoke. I have not yet tested this unit, but will if you choose not to.

I request that the CPSC investigate and evaluate this model smoke alarm to determine if there is any wider problem than my own detector failing. My faulty detector is still operational and available for evaluation and testing if necessary. I have, however, removed it from my home and will replace it before the end of the day.

Thank you for your consideration, and thank you for the work that you do to keep us all safer.

The product, in the report: Ionization & Photoelectric Smoke Alarm

Kidde PI2010 smoke detector failed and was the root cause that GENERATED smoke/fire and then detected its OWN smoke/fire to sound the alarm in my home around 2:30 am Dec 22, 2016.

Luckily, we were home (and awakened) to keep house from catching on fire and were able to remove the AC plug and unit (unit was generating smoke - my son-in-law unplugged unit from AC plug and also removed battery; smoke was in the bedroom; after fan turned on, I had safely removed the short AC plug unit /wires from rest of AC wiring in electrical ceiling box since plug was burnt/melted). Detector was installed on a bedroom ceiling; a few other detectors in house are interconnected (red wire) to also sound in event one detector goes off (other units DID sound, and only source of alarm was burnt PI2010).

I have NOT yet determined what to do with (1) original failed unit regarding evaluation and (2) the other PI2010 dual AC/battery units I have in the house. I do have other battery-only smoke/fire and CO detectors in the residence.

No confidence in PI2010 units at this time... put a different PI2010 back in bedroom where original was located, but did not hook to AC. I feel it may be necessary to eliminate risk and take all KIDDE PI2010 units off of AC power.

I do have pictures of burnt AC connection on unit and AC plug which will be posted to this SaferProducts.gov site; I have NOT opened up unit to take internal photo to view any internal components in the detector. For sure this was a concerning event for me and my family, and smoke was quite unpleasant/toxic (daughter and son-in law were sleeping in particular room, I was exposed to smoke as unit was removed and room air cleared; others in home (children) were in room down the hall). Unit was purchased at Home Depot, with MFG date 2011 Jul26; installation AC (w/red wire to sound other units) + battery; battery replaced May 5, 2016, so neither battery nor AC plug were touched before December 2016 event.

Thank you for your attention regarding this concerning event.

This model of smoke and CO detector was installed in two different homes, and both have had problems that make me believe they are malfunctioning and cannot be trusted as life safety devices.

One of these units malfunctioned around April 2016, causing the green AC power indicator turned off, even though AC power was connected. The unit had to be reset by removing it from AC power and battery power, and when reconnected it seemed to function again.

Later, on 10/8/2016, it had a false fire alarm when no fire or smoke was present. It failed to activate the other hardwired alarm connected to it, and failed to silence itself when the hush button was pressed. When the button was pressed, it seemed to put the alarm into test mode instead, which activated the other hardwired alarm. The alarm could only be stopped by removing AC power and battery power.

These two incidents happened at my home.

The second malfunctioning unit is located at a different residence, has had two false alarms in about 9 months. No smoke or carbon monoxide was believed to be present at the time of the alarms.

During pre-sale safety inspections of single and multi-family homes required in the state of Rhode Island, same model hardwired battery back-up smoke/CO alarms have been found to not activate during testing, although the indicator light on each unit remained illuminated showing it to be energized. I’ve encountered this situation involving the same model alarms on several occasions over the past two years and subsequently filed reports with CPSC at that time. The manufacturer claims that these alarms are supposed to chirp every 30-seconds at the end of their useful life, however, an all cases I’ve been involved with the residents report these alarms have not done so. I’m concerned that that homeowners are relying on smoke/CO alarms that show they’re energized and functioning when the units are actually not effective at all.

We were awakened to the house filled with smoke last Tuesday morning as we had left a pot of soup on the stove in the kitchen. The food completely charred and burned the smoke had traveled upstairs and moved under our closed bedroom door to awaken us.

We ran downstairs and turned off the stove and began airing out the house astonished as to why our hard-wired smoke alamrs (all four) had not gone off. We called Oakland Fire Department’s non-emergency number. The fire crew arrived and tested the smoke alarms which appeared to be working, but were surprised they did not go off.

The next morning, I saw on your website that the specific Kidde model on recall show the manufacture dates of October 22, 2013. However, our model’s manufacture date is October 21, 2013. Our unit is clearly defective. We lit a sage bush and held it under the unit and it did not go off.

We called Kidde and they sent us replacement units, but we have not yet returned the old ones to them. After installing the new one, we did the same “sage” experiment and the new one went off within one-minute of lighting the sage.

The caller stated that their department has only received 3 calls, but they are aware of other area departments that have received many calls. The 3 calls they received were for the same model.

The battery comes sealed into the alarm. The caller believes that there is an issue with the battery that the manufacturer needs to acknowledge.

The product, in the report: Kidde hard wired / battery back up smoke detectors

Complainant purchased newly constructed home in October 2014 and in June 2015 his 8 hardwired smoke detectors started falsely activating during the night and day. He contacted Kidde customer support and they advised him to trouble shoot them by disconnecting them from the hard wire and running them on battery power. After conducting the test, he found that 2 out of the 8 units were defective. He contacted Kidde customer support again and they sent him 2 new detectors. He asked if he needed to send them back to be examined and they told him no and instructed him to throw them away.

As a Senior Fire Investigator for the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, I believe that 2 out of 8 detectors being defective is unacceptable, and that Kidde should be examining defective smoke detectors in order to identify the cause of the failure. It is my experience that faulty detectors can mean the difference of life and death in a fire event, and nuisance alarms cause people to not use their smoke detectors. The complainant is the Town Fire Chief and had thrown the detectors away before informing me of the issue.

The product, in the report: Kidde Smoke Detector PI2010. White, approx. 6” diameter.

In August 2012 I purchased 7 Kidde Smoke Detectors, model PI2010, which were installed by an electrician in our home. Beginning Sept 2012 and continuing through today, 4 of the 7 detectors have failed. This product is wired into a ceiling fixture and has a battery backup. In each failure the product gives a false alarm and cannot be silenced until it is unplugged from the ceiling AND the battery is removed. The none of the detectors is in a dusty area. Vacuuming the sensor to remove dust does not solve the problem. 3 of the failed detectors were manufactured in May 2012. Kidde replace each of these 3 free of charge after the failure (1 in 2012, 1 in 2013, and 1 in 2014). They did not seem to be surprised or alarmed by these frequent failures. The fourth failure occurred this morning (6/22/2015) and it was one of the replacements, manufacture date May 2014. Even their replacement products are faulty!! I have no confidence this product is actually protecting our family from fire. The failure rate of this product is unacceptably high. From your website I see that I am not the first consumer to experience this problem. I would like to see this product recalled and I would like the company to refund the cost of all the detectors. (I will be contacting them to tell them this.)

I purchase 5 Kidde Model P12040 smoke alarms and 2 Model [REDACTED] CO and smoke alarms for an addition I was putting on my house. I had a professional electrician do all the wiring in my house. Shortly after install I started having false alarms. I knew they were false because I have one of each type still install from before the renovation and they were not going off. As they would go off I would remove each one that caused the system to go off. out of the 7 units only one had not gone off within a week. I called kidde customer service to see what was going on. They had me run all kinds of tests on my electrical system. All came back as they should. The final test was simple leaving them not hard wired and putting a battery in. Of course one went off as I expected within 10 minutes. A second was within 20 minutes. Kidde said they would replace the two units, however they never arrived in the mail as they said. After 6 months I still have not received assistance on any of the malfunctioning units. I was forced to return them and buy another brand (first alert). I have them now installed and do not have any false alarms, I have reached the conclusion that the issue lies in their product. A consumer should not have to worry about whether a alarm is real or not. Soon a person will ignore a alarm and it will bite them.

Caller stated that his smoke alarms were chirping and he replaced them with new ones as the instructions stated, however, the new ones started chirping as well. He disconnected the alarms and attempted to contact the company about the problem he was having, when he finally got through, he was placed on hold and then the call disconnected.

Caller stated that he is currently without working smoke alarms in his home. He feels that the manufacturer customer service is horrible and that the product is unsafe and needs to be addressed before there is a house fire.

The product, in the report: Kidde 10 year sealed lithium smoke alarm. Model P3010L.

Came home to smoke detector going off. Unit hangs above refrigerator. Started smelling and looking for smoke. Other detectors in the house were not going off. Silenced alarm and continued to look for smoke. None found. Detector goes off again after silence timeout. Removed detector from wall and swapped with another unit elsewhere in the house to verify issue with unit. Moved detector outside and still went off again after timeout. Ended up having to tape over detection area to keep it from going off. Did not risk turning unit off permanently as I wasn’t sure this would void my warranty. Also looked at some reviews on home depot and amazon. Many others experiencing the same problem, which prompted me to fill this out. My concern is that like stated with may others in the reviews, the cry-wolf of this makes you begin to disregard it, and that should never be the case with a life safety system.

The product, in the report: Kidde P3010L smoke alarm

The house I am renting came equipped with several Kidde P3010L battery-only smoke alarms. Since we moved in, June 30, 2014, at least 5 of these alarms have gone off. Most of these have gone off when there was no discernible smoke, and nobody was cooking. These alarms are, amazingly, single-use, so when they go off we are left without alarms until they can be replaced. Because of the high failure rate, several rooms in the house have been left unprotected for lengths of time that seem unsafe. I searched online for this model, and saw that many users on Amazon.com have reported similar problems: http://www.amazon.com/Kidde-P3010L-Worry-Free-Photoelectric-Battery/dp/B00FHW7PI6/ref=sr_1_20?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1421273791&sr=1-20&keywords=kidde#customerReviews I also note that a superficially similar model by the same manufacturer was recently recalled: http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2014/Kidde-Recalls-Smoke-and-Combination-SmokeCO-Alarms/

I hope you will investigate these faulty products and take whatever action you deem appropriate.

During a recent power outage, I accidentally triggered my Smoke/CO detector. Once clear, I thought everything was fine, but within minutes of the power coming back on it set off again. The only way to make it stop was to disconnect it. The next day after power was restored, I hooked in back up again and it immediately set off all the alarms again.

This device was purchased new in June of 2014 and installed on June 22, 2014. Mfg Date is Jan 22, 2014.

A search of the Kidde site shows other interconnected combination alarms doing the same thing. I believe the problem is bigger than they know or are admitting to.

Our water cooler caught on fire, and our alarm did not work at all. We became aware of the fire only by the smell. Thankfully it was contained in time, and there was minimal damage and no injuries. We bought the alarm for use in China, because apartments do not have safety features here. We purchased it in Massachusetts at Home Depot. After the fire I tested the alarm and it seemed to be working. It went through the test sequence.

On October 7, 2014 I went to a single family home located in North Kingstown, RI to perform a pre-sale inspection as required by local regulations. This house has two 110 volt, battery backup, interconnected devices. I went to the bedroom area first, I sprayed a small amount of smoke in the device (Smoke/co), and nothing happened, the green power light was on. I again sprayed a little bit more in the device and nothing happened. I then reached up and pushed the test button and nothing happened. I removed the device to check the date the device was made and found it to be June 2005 and there was a 9 volt battery in it. When I removed the device the power light stayed on after it had been removed from 110 volt power. The same model 110 volt smoke detector in the second bedroom functioned but had a low decibel level when activated. The occupants of this home have lived here since these detectors were installed, and never heard a chirp every 30 indicating they were near end of their functional life.
