No incident, no one hurt Made Jan 5, 2025, sent to the company Jan 8, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 24, 2025
The product, in the report: Google Nest Protect smoke detector
One of my Nest Protects chirped, and the app said I had a low battery. When I removed the batteries, one of them was very HOT to the touch.
UPDATED ON 1/8/2025: [Description of Risk of Harm: the battery became so hot it burned my fingers. Someone changing the batteries while on a ladder could lose their balance and fall off because of the burning. Left in place, I wonder if the battery could have continued to overhead and start a fire.]

No one hurt Made Aug 25, 2024, sent to the company Aug 29, 2024, published by CPSC Sep 13, 2024
The product, in the report: Google Nest Protect Smoke Detector
Google Nest protect smoke detector gave a warning that battery was low and to replace them. When I went to replace the battery one of them was extremely hot. Ive now read online that this has happened to others as well. These seems like it was an overheating lithium battery and seems like a potential fire hazard.

No one hurt Made Dec 20, 2023, sent to the company Dec 22, 2023, published by CPSC Jan 9, 2024
The product, in the report: Google battery operated photoelectric smoke alarm
Google Nest Protect - Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Detector - Battery Operated Model Topaz-2.9 started to chirp early in the morning. Got an alert the batteries were low. Took the smoke detector down and went to take the batteries out. One of the batteries was extremely hot, so hot I couldn’t take it out without burning my fingers. Had to wait for it to cool down. I did an internet search and saw this is a common problem. Called Google and they wanted me to replace the batteries and see if it happened again. I said that seems unsafe and didn’t want to risk that happening again. I am waiting for a return phone call from them.

Hurt, no treatment Made Nov 14, 2022, sent to the company Nov 16, 2022, published by CPSC Dec 1, 2022
The product, in the report: Google Nest Protect - Battery operated
I have 8 Nest Protect generation 2 in the house. One of these just started chirping and indicating very low battery. I went to replace the batteries with new [REDACTED] lithium cells (manufacturer recommended) and found that one of the old batteries was very hot. I measured the exterior temperature at 135 degrees F. What is causing this? I don’t want my smoke detectors to cause a fire.

No one hurt Made Nov 8, 2021, sent to the company Dec 3, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 17, 2021
The product, in the report: Google Nest Protect models Topaz-2.7 and Topaz 2.9. Software version 3.4rc6 Smoke alarm
Google Nest Protect smoke detectors are not sounding the alarm at every smoke detector when smoke is detected. Google’s specifications, as well as fire/building codes in California and other states, require smoke detectors to sound an alarm at every detector when any detector senses smoke.
This is a serious safety hazard. This functionality is required to ensure that everyone in a house is alerted when a fire is detected somewhere in the building.
Details: My home has 7 Nest Protect smoke detectors. I have tested the system using a blown out match as well as canned smoke at multiple different detectors. In each case, the individual Protect detected the smoke and sounded its alarm (an actual “emergency” alarm--not a “heads up”). In addition, I receive an “Emergency: There is smoke” notification on my phone. However, the alarm did not sound on any of the other 6 Nest Protects. Nest’s built-in test shows that all 7 Protects are correctly interconnected and operating properly.
I have reported this issue to Google’s support on 3 separate occasions with no response: 1) On 10/27/2021, I reported this to Google’s chat support. After escalation, Google told me they do not recommend testing the Nest Protect this way and disconnected. 2) On 10/27/2021, I reported this to Google’s phone support. The support rep agreed this was an issue, escalated the incident to the Nest safety team and told me I should hear back within 24 hours. I have not yet had a response. 3) On October 31, I posted this incident on Google’s Nest Community. The Product Expert there agreed this was an issue and escalated it to the Google team. I have not yet had a response.
