I have 9 First Alert Smoke detectors that have been installed new for about 3 months. Two of the devices have caused false alarms in the past two days. One false alarm on August 16 2026 which would not clear and caused a fire emergency response by Arlington County Fire department. The second false alarm was today from a separate unit that I was able to clear. This is no acceptable function from a family safety product.

The product, in the report: First Alert smoke alarm, model SM210.

I recently purchased a new photoelectric smoke detector (First Alert/Resideo brand, model SM210, manufactured by Resideo Technologies Inc., El Paso TX 79936). While setting up the device, I noticed by chance that the packaging states “once deactivated the alarm cannot be reactivated and must be replaced.” This is a permanent, irreversible deactivation switch. My safety concern is about the labeling, design, and a critical physical flaw: this warning is printed in the same small, plain text as all other general instructions on the back of the packaging. There is no bold warning, no red text, no large font, no sticker on the device itself, and nothing that would alert a consumer to the permanent and irreversible nature of sliding this switch before they do so. Compounding this danger significantly: after sliding the switch to the deactivate position, the switch can be physically slid back to the activate position. The device gives no indication whatsoever that it is permanently disabled. A consumer who accidentally deactivates the unit and slides it back to the activate position will have every reason to believe the detector is fully functional. There is no warning light, no audible alert, no physical resistance, and no indication of any kind that the device is permanently dead. As a previous owner of an older model of the same brand, my established habit was to temporarily deactivate the alarm when cooking produced smoke, then reactivate and rehang it afterward. Had I followed that same habit with this new model SM210, I would have permanently disabled a brand new smoke detector and then confidently rehung it believing it to be fully functional. No injury occurred, but this combination of inadequate labeling AND a switch that physically allows the appearance of reactivation creates a serious and realistic scenario where a consumer unknowingly installs a permanently disabled smoke detector, believing it to be active, and subsequently dies or is injured in a fire.

The product, in the report: First Alert SC5 Smoke detecotor

I am submitting this complaint to report repeated failures of First Alert SC5 smoke detectors, which are marketed and sold as critical life-safety devices.

All units involved were purchased new and are less than one year old. The detectors were installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with proper wiring, appropriate placement, and new backup batteries.

    The following failures have occurred:

One smoke detector failed completely and would not power up after installation.

Two additional detectors repeatedly triggered smoke alarms when no smoke, fire, or hazardous condition was present.

A manufacturer-provided warranty replacement unit failed approximately three weeks after receipt.

To rule out a wiring or installation issue, I relocated affected detectors to different mounting locations and electrical connections. The failures continued after relocation, indicating the issue was not limited to a specific wiring circuit or installation point.

These failures occurred under normal residential conditions and were not associated with cooking, steam, or other known nuisance alarm triggers. Troubleshooting steps recommended by the manufacturer, including resets and battery replacement, did not resolve the issues.

Smoke detectors are essential life-safety devices. As a Deputy Fire Chief, I know that repeated false alarms and early unit failures undermine confidence in the product and may lead occupants to ignore alarms or disable the devices, increasing the risk of injury or death during an actual fire. A google search indicates that false alarms are a wide-spread problem with the SC5 smoke detector devices.

Given the short service life, multiple failures, and the failure of a warranty replacement unit, I am concerned that this product line presents a reliability and safety risk to consumers. I believe this issue warrants review to determine whether a defect or broader pattern of failure exists.

I can provide product model numbers, serial numbers, purchase information, photographs, and correspondence with the manufacturer upon request.

The product, in the report: First alert smoke detectors

Complaint Title: Faulty Smoke Alarms Causing 40+ False Alarms, Thanksgiving Emergency, and Zero Accountability

Over the last 18 months, I have experienced over 40 false alarms caused by faulty smoke detectors from this company. I have a [REDACTED] Alarm system that monitors every detector, so I have hard proof of every single incident. What should have been a reliable safety system has turned into a nonstop nightmare.

I originally installed seven brand-new smoke detectors, all purchased at once. Every single one failed. The company replaced them and those replacements failed too and I replaced again. In total, Ive had to replace seven units, twice, within a year and a half. Thats not a coincidence; thats a defective product line.

The worst event happened today, Thanksgiving at 4 AM. Four different alarms began going off while I was hours away from home. [REDACTED] was preparing to dispatch the fire department, and I had no choice but to drive a 4+ hour round-trip in the middle of the night to prevent the fire department from breaking my door down. That ruined the holiday, cost me money, and put me in danger on the road all for another false alarms caused by their junk equipment.

This entire situation is unacceptable, irresponsible, and frankly embarrassing for a company that sells safety products.

Heres what Im demanding: Full financial reimbursement for all defective units: $75each Reimbursement for tolls and gas from the emergency Thanksgiving trip: $100 Compensation for the ongoing stress, sleep disruption, repeated false alarms, and the 4 AM Thanksgiving incident: $1,000

If they do not resolve this, I will be filing in small claims court. Ive given them more than enough chances. A company selling safety equipment that triggers emergency responses more than 40 times in 18 months is a liability, not a service.

Shame on this company for putting me through this and refusing to fix the root cause.

The product, in the report: smoke alarm with 10 year sealed battery, various models by [REDACTED] or First Alert

The sealed 10 year battery smoke alarms from First Alert, [REDACTED] or other companies, DO NOT WORK. I have purchased repeatedly installing in different areas of my home and all malfunction within a few months to a max of 3 years. The terror they cause my family and pets from false alarms has caused us to go without any smoke alarms. The reviews on all websites exposes the truth that this is a widespread problem, and is known to the companies. When I call the manufacturer, they replace all the units for free, only to have the same thing happen again over next couple of years. Previously, we had alarms with replaceable batteries, that did not give false alarms. We’d get a low battery chirp and change the battery. Now, in California, we can ONLY buy the “10 year battery” models which are completely useless. Due to all the false alarms, I have no faith they’d actually function properly if there were a fire.

The product, in the report: Smoke Detectors Model number BRK 3120B

I purchased First Alert Smoke detectors Model BRK 3120B in March 2022. These are hard-wired smoke detectors, installed into a modern, clean home. The units keep giving false alarms. I have had over 20 false alarms in the past 2 years since installing. The company keeps giving me instructions to clean the units every few weeks in order to avoid false alarms and avoiding addressing the issue. They finally offered to replace the units, which is in process. I see in online reviews that that I am not alone with false alarms with this particular model. Repeated false alarms are dangerous in that the user begins to ignore the alarm. We’ve disconnected alarms in certain rooms with repeated false alarms and when they go off in the middle of the night, we do not even get up to check for fire anymore. I feels that others are probably doing the same thing and a real fire could be ignored. The company does not seem to care or want to address the issue. They just tell me to keep cleaning them with compressed air and the vacuum cleaner, which, quite honestly, is very impractical given that these are mounted on the ceiling.

The product, in the report: First Alert model P1210 photoelectric smoke alarm. I’ve seen two different models with this part number. One has a squarish test button and the other has a longer rectangular oval test button.

I am a fire inspector with one of my duties being to inspect smoke alarms in R2 occupancies. Over the last four years I have had repeated experience with First Alert P1210 smoke alarms that cause concern.

    1. While California requires battery powered smoke alarms sold in the state to last at least 10 years, I’ve seen many examples of P1210s dying in as little time as a year or two. 2. Even worse, I’ve come across many examples that died without providing any warning to the apartment tenant. No chirping warning that the battery is getting low. I go to test them and they are just dead. 3. The installation of the alarm into the bracket can be troublesome, I’ve seen many examples where the alarm was installed in the bracket but it didn’t activate as it was supposed to. The labeling on the diactivation switch is confusing as well. 4. About half of the P1210 alarms I tested would do a chirp chirp chirp instead of the full alarm. At first I thought that was a low battery indication, but finally after coming across so many that did it I called First Alert. Apparently that 3 chirp means the alarm has gone off before. So about half of the P1210s that I’ve tested have had false alarms. Many of these are in locations away from the kitchen where you might expect a high number of false alarms.

First Alert and other smoke alarm manufacturers need to realize that many of their products get installed into apartments. The tenants didn’t buy them, and most often don’t have access to the owner’s manual. Smoke alarms must be intuitive and simple to install and operate.

First Alert SC7010LBLV smoke detectors. We have now had 3 of these fail. They have constant false alarms and now, less than 3 years from manufacture date on a 10 year battery, 3 are completely dead already. And on top of this, when the battery dies it sounds a full fire alarm on all alarms connected in the house and won’t stop sounding even after using the manufacturer’s deactivate button. We have had so many false alarms over the years that my kids no longer get up when they sound, which is a huge safety hazard for us. Manufacturers should be under certain regulations as to how often their products can have these false alarms.

The product, in the report: First Alert Model No. P1210E white smoke detector, non-replaceable 10 year battery.

Our house had 7 First Alert brand smoke detectors model P1210E. All of them were 10 year detectors with 10 year integrated batteries. All of them were purchased around 2020. So far I’ve had to deactivate 5 of them becasue they were going off randomly at all hours of the day and night. They would beep 3 times a couple times then stop. Or not. I’d finally find the one responsible , deactivate it, and then another one would go off a few weeks later. I’ve repeated this process 5 times. These are not reliable products and now my house is down 5 smoke detectors because of this totally unacceptable product. We were at my parents house and theirs started doing the same thing. My sister happened to be there and reported that the ones at her house do the same thing. These should be recalled.

Had a pack of 6 First Alert smoke detector professionally installed in our home after we purchased it to update and they have been in now about 8 months. They all went off one day and we didn’t know why and smelt a strong electrical smell and had to call the fire department they couldn’t tell where to smell was coming from or find heat with heat gun. We have had the strong electrical smell in our home and different smoke detectors going off at different times finally started pulling down the smoke detectors and they are all burnt up and could have caught our home on fire if we didn’t find this.

The product, in the report: First Alert/BRK Electronics 7020BSL Hardwired LED Strobe Light Smoke Alarm Model 7020BSL

To whom it may concern, There appears to be a systemic defect with First Alert/BKR 7020BSL smoke detectors. This defect leads to premature end-of-life, failure of the deactivation switch, and possible other malfunctions.

Our family has experienced 4 failures of a First Alert/BKR 7020BSL smoke detectors. This report documents the 4th failure. Report No. [REDACTED] discusses the first 3 failures. For convenience, some of the information in this report is a reproduction from the earlier report.

On August 18, 2019 I installed five 7020BSL detectors. Now, 4 of the 5 detectors have indicated a failure by sounding the 5-beep end-of-life indication, well before the 10-year listed lifetime. The first 3 failures were reported to First Alert consumer affairs. I chose not to report the 4th failure, as I no longer trust First Alert devices and do not want a replacement device. Instead, I replaced the 4th failed device with a different brand.

Specific information on the failed units is listed below: 1st Failure: Date of failure: Nov 10, 2020 Date of Manufacture listed on the back of the unit: Oct 19, 2018 First Alert Consumer Affairs Case Number for this failure: #[REDACTED]

2nd Failure: Date of failure: Nov 22, 2020 Date of Manufacture listed on the back of the unit: June 14, 2019 First Alert Consumer Affairs Case Number for this failure: #[REDACTED]

3rd Failure: Date of failure: March 16, 2021 Date of Manufacture listed on the back of the unit: June 14, 2019 First Alert Customer Support Case Number for this failure: #[REDACTED]

4rd Failure: Date of failure: March 28, 2022 Date of Manufacture listed on the back of the unit: June 14, 2019 First Alert Customer Support Case Number for this failure: N/A

All detectors were installed per the manufacturer’s requirements, such as distance from vents, ceiling fans etc. After the first failure, we have been cleaning all the smoke detectors monthly per the manufacturer’s guidance to help prevent additional failures.

Secondly, contrary to the product literature, after deactivating the units using the deactivation switch, the 5-beep sequence continues. The failure of the deactivation switch occurred on all the failed units. This further indicates a systemic problem or design flaw.

To their credit, First Alert did replace the first 3 failed units at no cost. However, this does not address a possible systemic defect, or problems with the other unit we still have installed in our house. Therefore, I am reporting these failures to you, to investigate further. Please contact me if you require further information.

Below is a description of the risk of harm these defects create.

Firstly, this smoke detector has poor design, which puts the individuals it is intended to protect at risk. This smoke detector is intended to provide a fire/smoke alarm for individuals who are deaf, hence the strobe light. However, as designed, the device only indicates end-of-life via 5 auditory beeps - no clear visual signal is provided to indicate end-of-life (e.g. the strobe light does not flash). Therefore, a deaf individual has no clear indication that the device has failed or reached end-of-life and needs replacement. This poor design puts the people the device is intended to protect (i.e. deaf individuals) at risk of harm. There is a high probability that deaf individuals will not promptly replace a failed device and living with a failed smoke detector increases the risk of harm, injury, or death during a fire.

The risk presented by this poor design is compounded by the device’s abnormally high premature failure rate. As indicated in this report, these smoke detectors tend to fail years before the stated end-of-life. Therefore, there is a high probability that a deaf individual could be living with a failed device before considering replacing their smoke detectors. Living with a failed smoke detector puts an individual at increased risk of injury or death during a fire.

Secondly, my report indicates there appears to be systemic defects with these devices, causing them to fail prematurely and not be deactivated by the deactivation switch. There is a risk that there are additional defects, especially in the detection and alarm functions. It is possible that a defect could cause a device that appears to be in good working order to nonetheless fail to alarm on an actual fire. Therefore, it is recommended to investigate the extent of the systemic defects in this device and determine if it affects the detection and alarm functions of the device.

As an aside, we installed these smoke detectors in our house because our son was born deaf and we hired a deaf nanny to care for him. My wife and I are hearing, so we were alerted to the premature failures of these devices and replaced them promptly.

Please let me know if any additional information is needed. Thank you.

I was awoken by my dog who alerted there was smoke in our apartment, the smoke detector that we have (First Alarm sc9120b) did not go off. It was recently inspected about a month prior by our maintenance crew who said it was in working condition. Our entire apartment was clouded in a thick layer of smoke which made it hard for us to breathe. A maintenance member came by after the incident and tested the detector, when the test button was pushed the alarm sounded but when he held a piece of burning paper within 6 inches of the alarm it did not sound. It was only when the flame was touching the alarm for 5 seconds that it sounded.

Remounted it 2 days later; originally install 7Dec2017. This is not the first time one of the 6 P1210 detectors I installed at different locations within the house. Not only was this the third time this particular device alarmed, 2 other devices have also alarmed over the past 2 years. One of the devices is in a room near the the electrical panel; one of the circuit breakers may have been arcing at that time but haven’t had an alarm for over a year since. I purchased a two pack of First Alert, Smoke and CO detectors, model number PC1210V on January 6, 2020 from Costco. About 2 weeks ago one started beeping during the day, I took it down and reset it and it appeared to work. This morning at 1:45 AM it went off and sounded an audible alert, thank G-d there was no issue. I removed it and attempted to disable the device. Following instructions on device back I was unsuccessful at disabling the device (as noted by items 1 and 2 in picture below). I broke off portion of tab noted (the bottom one). That was unsuccessful at silencing the alarm. I then attempted to take apart the device, it was very difficult. I used two 3/8” long slotted screwdrivers and a hammer to break apart the device. Fortunately, I did not hit the lithium battery and start a fire. Believe these devices should be recalled. • I am concerned others may experience similar issues with this smoke/CO detector and be unsuccessful in turning it off. Then they may attempt to silence it by tearing it apart or by smashing it with a hammer/mallet. This could cause a Lithium fire. • Per further exploration I surmised I was supposed to tear away/break away something located a few inches from the “DEACTIVATE” instructions and arrow. This is noted by items 3 & 4 noted on pictures.

Upon replacing batteries in my smoke detectors, I found that most of them would not operate with the fresh batteries. I have 5 smoke detectors all of the same brand, model and date of manufacture. The same battery terminal has oxidation on most of the detectors. The name brand batteries I removed were only a year old and not corroded. To make these detectors work, I had to scrape the terminal with the end of a screwdriver then sand with emery cloth. It took several attempts to get a few of these detectors working again. I almost gave up. I know most people would not know how to aggressively clean terminals like this. It may mean that some people assume their detectors are working when they are not. This is obviously a dangerous situation. I am also concerned that with the plating removed from the contacts after sanding, that the battery connection through the terminal may cease at any time due to more oxidation forming. This would leave the device non-functional. The issue is probably the plating used on the terminals or the application of the plating. After an hour or more of concerted effort, my 5 detectors are working. The question is for how long.

On August 1, 2019 Purchased 8 First Alert Model P1210 smoke alarms from Costco. Product was packaged 2 to a package. Initial test of each smoke alarm yielded only 1 of 8 that worked for the press to test step.

A call to First Alert customer service resulted in them sending out 8 new detectors to us. They arrived on August 14th. Two of the eight detectors shipped to us were defective and did not operated using the press to test button after being activated.

We think this could be serious if people simply installed the detector and expected it to work.

In any case an 87% or 25% failure rate for any safety product has to be unacceptable. Further, to ship the very same model number as a replacement and still have unacceptable failure rates indicates a severe failure in both manufacturing quality and test, and leadership and management.

The product, in the report: First Alert OneLink wireless smoke alarm

This smoke alarm started blaring a full emergency (NOT a low battery) at approximately 4:00am on June 11, 2019. I immediately went to find the source of the fire, as nobody in the house was awake, and no one had been for many hours at that time to cause a false alarm from things like steam or burning food.

After a moment of panic that seemed like hours, I determined that there was no emergency. Unfortunately I then fell getting the alarm off the ceiling and was knocked unconscious for a minute or two. Besides a head injury, I had injuries to my legs where I hit while going down.

While I was relieved to find that my house was *not* in fact on fire, I’m extremely concerned that this alarm would malfunction in such a way as to go into full emergency mode without any smoke or fire whatsoever. It was located in the hallway, a normally occupied area of the house, and was not dusty or dirty.

Smoke alarms simply should not sound at random in clear air. Like most people would do, I immediately removed the batteries. However, as you certainly know, dead or missing batteries in smoke detectors are a leading cause of fire deaths in the United States. Thus, it is imperative that smoke alarms function correctly. I also would not have been injured and knocked unconscious if I didn’t have to get the screaming alarm off the ceiling in a time of panic and adrenaline.

I would like the CPSC to investigate and see if a full recall is warranted on this type of alarm. If you would like me to send you the unit in question that malfunctioned, I kept it and am willing to ship it for further investigation.

I bought replacement smoke alarms and less than a year later atleast one of them is doing the same thing. I have not tested the rest of the new ones. We also have a carbon monoxide alarm from them that beeps as if the battery is low or dead. When we replace the battery it still beeps. This product is dangerous because you can never be sure if it is truly working based on the failure rate that we have experienced.

We purchased 60 First Alert Model # P1210 detectors with a 10-year sealed battery. Over the next 3 month period we installed all 60 alarms in the homes of Borough residents. Then in September 2018 we got a call from one of our elderly residents that the new smoke alarm we installed was not working. We went out, confirmed it was signaling a low battery and replaced it with another alarm (a different model purchased at a later date). Since that first malfunctioning detector we have had additional complaints and up to November 1, 2018 have replaced 12 of the 60 detectors we installed.

Smoke Detector, First Alert Model P1200 manufactured 2014 DEC 16. Bought 2-16-2015 along with several other detectors for my residence from Lowes Home Improvement.. I placed a new 9 Volt battery in this detector and within minutes before I got to reinstalling it in a bedroom ceiling, I pushed the test button and it sounded one time. Within about 15 seconds I smelled something, electrical smell, burning. There was a bright orange glow on the cover and it became extremely hot to the touch and the cover started to melt at the orange glow point. It was to hot to touch. I removed the battery and put in a sink and ran water over it. I’ve no doubt that it would have been in flames if I had installed the device and left the room. I notified the Raleigh NC Fire Department and got no response, which was somewhat surprising, possibly because my residence is not located in a ‘high rent’ area nor am I politically involved in the City. I sent a notification to the First Alert manufacturer using their web site but again no response from them. I notified the NC State Fire Marshall’s Office and they advised me to report the issue this this web site. I still have the device.

I recently purchased a house with First Alert smoke detectors [Model P 1210, manufacture date Aug. 2016]. The alarm went off at approximately 3 am, but there was no fire or smoke. I tried pressing the test button, hoping it would reset. The device sounded another three times, and I finally had to disconnect and deactivate the device. So much for a 10 year life.

In April 17, 2017 we purchased two First Alert Model No. P1210 (stamped 2017 Feb 16) smoke alarms so we would not have to change batteries. It was supposed to be good for 10 years. We installed them ourselves each in a bedroom. The first one started going off in June 2017 and would not stop beeping. It was deactivated and taken down from our guest bedroom. The second one went off at 2:08 this morning (10/3/2017) in our bedroom. This one also had to be deactivated. Needless to say, one lasted two months and the second one lasted less than six months. We believe we would have been better off to buy the cheap ones and replaced the batteries!

The product, in the report: First Alert 10 yr. Batt. Smoke Alarm Model No. P1210

I serve in the Fire and Life Safety Division For Rockingham County Fire and Rescue in Rockingham County, VA. My job responsibilities include Public Safety Education and Asst. Fire Marshal duties. A member of our department recently brought to me a Smoke Alarm that an elderly family member had in their home. During a visit he stated he pushed the test button on the alarm and nothing happened. He inquired to the elderly family members about the alarms and they stated that they were recently purchased from a local Costco store. They are 10 yr. battery alarms. First Alert Model No. P1210. He took the alarms down and found on the back of them that there was a deactivate switch which when operated permanently disables the alarms. I would imagine the purpose of this switch is that when the alarms get to the end of their life and begin to chirp you can deactivate them before tossing them in a trash receptacle. The alarms are designed in a way that once the switch is placed in the deactivate position they should not be able to be placed back on the mounting bracket.

Here is the issue... these alarms were somehow deactivated before being placed in service. The elderly couple did state they had difficulty placing the alarms on the mounting bracket, however, were eventually able to get them mounted to the bracket. All along they thought they had the protection of smoke alarms when in fact they were disabled. While I understand the intent of the deactivation switch I feel this creates a problem in providing a false sense of security. I feel these units provide a major safety issue. Though as public safety educators we preach that people need to check their alarms using the test button monthly, fact is few follow through with this lesson. Within that group are elderly and those unable to understand the safety message due to language barrier. These are the ones that probably need to have the most guaranteed protection. If a deactivation switch is going to be included, which personally I am not in favor of, I feel there should be some other way that is more obvious in indicating the alarm no longer works or provides the protection those using it may need to count on.

If you wish to speak further with me I am certainly willing to discuss this issue. [REDACTED PII]

We purchased 4 new First Alert Fire/Smoke alarms (model SA320) in 2016. They recently started going off at random times giving the 3 beep series 4-5 times then stopping. I change the batteries every 6 months. They are continuing to alarm randomly. I have changed the batteries again thinking maybe the batteries were bad. This is not fixing the problem. I can understand maybe 1 being defective, but all 4 that I purchased? The date on the alarm is September 7, 2016. They were purchased from Lowe’s.

The product, in the report: Photoelectric Single Station Smoke Alarm

A homeowner had an unattended cooking fire in a pan. She stated the house was filled with smoke from burning oil. The fire produced both smoke and flames, But it was the thick smoke that alerted her. She stated there was so much smoke, that after smothering the fire in the pan, she had to open every door and window in the house and “air it out” She stated that neither one of her smoke alarms ever activated. The alarms were First-Alert P1210 that were installed in 2016. I had tested the alarms prior to the incident. This was done the first week of January 2017 and then again on January 10, 2017. Both times the alarms sounded when the test button was depressed. On May 3rd, after being notified of the incident, I manually tested the alarms again. They sounded. I then sprayed the units with canned smoke. I tested each alarm. With the one by the bedrooms, when I used the normal amount of smoke that is usually used for testing, it did not alarm. I then sprayed what I felt was excessive smoke, and it finally alarmed. No matter how much smoke I used, I was never able to get the other unit to alarm.

The product, in the report: First Alert smoke detector Model P1210

Purchased approximately 60 of these First Alert smoke detectors model #P1210 from Costco between Feb 2015 to June 2015. Right out of the box we tested each unit and 8 of the 60 did not sound the test alarm. We returned those and got new ones from Costco. Installed the product in 30 different units. Got a complaint within a couple months that 1 unit didn’t go off only 10-15 feet away from a kitchen fire but fortunately the detectors further away went off. Started testing the units with smoke and found many (maybe 1 in 4) took 2-4 minutes to go off when placed in a covered bucket with smoke and some didn’t go off at all. Took those back to Costco and got replacements. Starting within months of install and over the last 2 years tenants have complained about the units beeping for no reason and not being able to stop the noise so they take them down. We have replaced approximately 50% of the units now and are no longer replacing with First Alert. I recently called the company to see if the units were recalled and apparently they were not recalled but they are sending me replacements of an updated model to replace the most recent batch that we picked up from tenants. I will test them to see if they work out of the box but I’m not sure I will risk using them with tenants.

The product, in the report: it is a combination smoke and co detector from first alert.. model number sc07

The detector sounds randomly false alarms. It is in the basement and whenever I turn on the lights and open the door near it, it goes off. I have tried cleaning it and changing the batteries. It was a very expensive detector and I just don’t trust it now.

The product, in the report: First Alert 120V AC hardwired smoke & fire alarm for hardwired alarm replacement with battery backup during power outages. Model 9120B.

I had purchased a First Alert 120V AC hardwired smoke & fire alarm (model 9120B) earlier this year. I selected this model because it has a battery backup with an [REDACTED] 9V battery included. The battery was in its swing-out battery compartment.

In the User’s Manual, it did not instruct how to properly install in the battery. There were no markings on the alarm itself for where the battery’s positive terminal should be place. So, I left the battery in the same place in its swing-out battery compartment as it was when I purchased this alarm. I pushed the door closed.

Then, I noticed an opening under the swing-out battery compartment where I can see the battery’s terminals. They were touching only plastic.

I opened the swing-out battery compartment, and noticed that part of the compartment covers one of the battery’s terminals. The battery is useless. It does not connect to anything electrical.

There are no instructions in the User’s Manual on how to install the battery, nor markings on the alarm itself on how to install the battery. Having the battery in the alarm is false security, and in case the hardwiring fails, the alarm will not have any electricity because the battery won’t be installed properly. People depending on the battery backup could possibly die in the event of a fire.

First Alert Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Model No SC07

Smoke alarm goes off randomly in the middle of the night. This is our second unit. It is a replacement unit because we had similar problems with the first unit. This is only 7months old. There is no dust on it. I was told by company to try blowing out dust with compressed air and that this is required monthly!

I don’t believe that any alarm should require maintenance other than battery replacement and tests. I figure if enough people are having the same problem and report it, then this may be part of a larger issue, at least for this model. And there should be design requirements for alarms that require they be maintenance free.
