The product, in the report: Smoke Alarm with Strobe Light
Fire department was dispatched for an activated smoke alarm and found a smoke alarm that had failed internally and nearly caused a fire which triggered the alarm so they contacted my office to make me aware.
I met the home owner the next day, he and his family are hearing impaired so they have BRK 100S strobe alarms throughout their single family home. All are hardwired and interconnected. He advised the alarms went off and when he was not able to reset them he began investigating. Upon opening a bedroom door he encountered an odor of burning and some smoke around said alarm. The fire department arrived and removed the device from the ceiling. It was hot to the touch and had some obvious melting and discoloration so they sent me a photo and contacted me.
While meeting with the owner I took photos of the smoke alarm, the mounting bracket, and the electric box it was wired from. The electric box showed no signs of damage or failure. The only visible damage was to the internal components of the smoke alarm. I asked the owner if I could have the alarm to send it to CPSC for further evaluation. He said he called BRK Electronics and they were shipping him a new one free of charge but they too requested the alarm. I advised him that I was concerned that they may get the alarm and never report the problem. He agreed to let me take possession of which I did.
My plan was to give it to [REDACTED] at our next state fire marshal’s meeting but I learned today he will not be attending that meeting but he asked that I submit this report.
