  1. Emergency room

Made Nov 5, 2016, sent to the company Nov 16, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 15, 2016

The product, in the report: Cover Mate 1 supplied by Sundance Spas Model: Edison Serial #: 100506976

Date of accident: August 26, 2015

Description of accident: Using the Cover Mate 1 cover lifter for the Sundance Spa Edison Model, adding chlorine to the spa, I lifted the cover so I could put the chlorine directly into the motor/agitator. Because I lack to upper body strength, I grabbed ahold of a handle which was conveniently located on the side of the spa tub. This handle as it turns out, was not what I assumed it to be but instead was to prevent the spa cover from falling to the ground when fully opened. Because my hand was securely braced on this handle the spa cover crushed my right thumb, causing a near complete amputation, crush injury, arterial bleed, as well as a fracture to the base of this thumb.

Emergency Treatment: My children brought me to the hospital where x-rays were taken and pain medication was thankfully given. I was told I had to go to another hospital to have it repaired or “removed and a flap made.” At this point my husband arrived and took me to the second hospital because I refused transportation by ambulance. The surgeon at the second hospital was very talented and put my thumb back together and the next day I saw a hand specialist for a second opinion. The hand specialist reassured me I would heal, may grow a thumb nail again, and have some function.

Long term Effects: One year plus after this injury I continue to have some limited movement, alteration in sensation, and constant feelings of cold discomfort in the distal part of my dominant thumb.
