Summary: Hot tub / spa steps failed while standing on them.
While I (adult male, 42 years old) getting out of my hot tub (spa), the top platform of my spa steps gave way (fell down). Then I stepped down to the next step and it too gave way.
Upon inspecting the steps that were still in place, I saw that most of them had screws that were very loose. The steps that had given way had screws that had completely come out. So I concluded that the reason the steps failed is that the screws had loosened over time. There is no mechanism to prevent the screws from loosening over time due to normal use and/or due to vibrations from the adjacent hot tub. This seems like a design flaw. The screws should use lock washers, serrated/star washers, and/or thread lock compound to prevent this.
The installation manual also does not specify screw tightening torque, but it should.
I luckily didn’t suffer injury because I was able to grab the handrail and prevent myself from falling, but a less agile person could be severely hurt.
