  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 7, 2024, sent to the company Jul 11, 2024, published by CPSC Aug 2, 2024

The product, in the report: Our sofa is a gray “putty”, Next-Gen Gaucho Power Reclining Sofa. The width is 93 in x 43 in x 41 in. It weighs 264 lbs. The cat weighed 2 lbs.

Our kitten, [REDACTED], was crushed in an Ashley Next-Gen Classic Power Reclining sofa when my 88 year old mother reclined. We always checked for the location of my toddler granddaughter and pets prior to lowering the recliner. On the day of [REDACTED] accident, he wasn’t visible so had likely crawled up into an area we couldn’t see. The outcome was grotesque and traumatizing for the whole family. We have since been horrified to learn that children and even one adult to our knowledge have been killed by mechanical/electronic reclining furniture and countless pets have suffered the same fate. I don’t think the particular brand of furniture was the issue. I think it is all furniture with mechanical/electronic parts. We have since unplugged all of the reclining furniture we own, as my granddaughter and the remaining pet often play on the floor around and behind the furniture. We have learned that no matter how cautious and aware, there is always that one time....I am writing in the hope that furniture manufacturers would design these reclining pieces with safety in mind for living beings of all species, sizes, and shapes. One accidental and brutal death is one too many. For our part, we will never buy mechanical/electronic furniture again.
