Emergency room Made Oct 21, 2025, sent to the company Nov 4, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: Flexsteel Power reclining sofa with console. Flexsteel Model 1645-63PH-70671
My wife severed the tip of her dominant hand index finger on a new Flexsteel sofa. She caught her finger in the armrest mechanism as she lowered it to the down position. We had the couch for 1 day, and looking at the mechanism after the injury, it is apparent that this type of injury will be easy to repeat as the mechanism is fully exposed and functions nearly like scissors as the armrest goes to the down position.

Emergency room Made Apr 2, 2016, sent to the company Apr 18, 2016, published by CPSC May 2, 2016
The product, in the report: Flexsteel Latitudes Collection power reclining sofa - leather, with two reclining mechanisms. Each mechanism controls one half of the couch.
Our cat’s tail was caught and entangled in the power recline mechanism on a Flexsteel Latitudes Collection power reclining sofa. This was possible because there are no side guards on the mechanism - a serious safety defect that we were not aware of until this incident. This resulted in serious injury to our cat, and ultimately amputation of his tail. We also incurred injuries (cat bites) trying to remove the cat from the mechanism. We could not extract the tail from the mechanism because it was so tightly caught and entangled, and instead had to remove the entire mechanism from the couch and bring it, with tail intertwined, to the veterinary emergency hospital. I will attach pictures taken by the veterinary emergency hospital of the cat’s tail in the mechanism. There is no quick release on the mechanism itself, and no way to remove the mechanism from the couch other than to unbolt it - which took approximately 20 minutes and increased the trauma of the incident. This power mechanism safety defect has the potential to injure other pets and even small children who’s fingers would easily fit into the side opening of the mechanism.
I contacted Flexsteel about the incident and safety defect. I was transferred to their parts department who took down information, including our phone number, but said we needed to deal with the store where we bought the couch from regarding the incident. I called the store (Rome Furniture in Gardner, MA) and was given a contact and email address to report the incident to. I sent an email to the address provided, including a description of the incident and photos, 3 days ago. We have not been contacted by either Flexsteel or Rome Furniture about the incident to date.
