  1. No one hurt

Made Mar 4, 2016, sent to the company Mar 14, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 28, 2016

The product, in the report: Lane Evans Power Wall Recliners 2) $448.00 each plus tax

SAFETY COMPLAINT This complaint is in regards to two (2) Lane Evans Power Wall Recliners, Mocha color, item number 145720. They were purchased by me online from Boscov’s on 06/21/13 for $448.00 each plus sales tax. The serial numbers are 020861410 and 020744554.

These chairs tilt forward when reclined. If the chair is reclined only a few inches and you lean forward at all, the chairs tip over frontward. They are very dangerous. I have had them unplugged so that my recliners will not recline. It defeats the purpose of reclining chairs, but I did this for what I thought would was be a temporary fix on my part. These chairs have been unplugged and unused since 2014.

I have been contacting Lane and filing this complaint via their online system since 04/14 to no avail. No one ever responded to me. I last contacted Lane via their online system in 01/16. Again, no one responded. I then contacted Lane by phone and talked to a Mr. [REDACTED]. I explained the above. He told me he would assign me a case number and contact me via email.

These are the emails between Lane and me since I called them to get response.

    MY COMPLAINT

The issue is that these recliners are very light weight in the front and are dangerous. If any weight is put on them when reclined, the whole chair tips forward. I have had them for years, never sit on them and have to keep them unplugged so they CAN’T recline. They look brand new. They can cause bodily harm and with a young child in the home, I cannot take the chance of him being injured. I have sent numerous emails over the years with no response whatsoever. Where these ever recalled ? Will someone please come and take these away ? Thank you very much.

[REDACTED] Email - [REDACTED] LANE’ S RESPONSE

On Feb 12, 2016, at 12:44 PM,, [REDACTED] wrote:

Dear [REDACTED], The mechanism (in a power or non-power unit) is designed so that the extended ottoman will support the weight of the user’s legs. When the user is sitting in the furniture in the reclined position, the load on the mechanism is evenly balanced. However, as the load applied to the front of the unit and the extended ottoman increases, the balance is disrupted - the ottoman acts as a lever, and the furniture can be tipped forward. This is the same principle as a seesaw. The other issue with overloading the extended ottoman is potential product damage. The crossrail on the mechanism can be damaged if excessive force is applied. (FYI: Technically, if the mech is damaged by this action, it is improper use and is not covered under the warranty.) All reclining furniture made by any manufacturer operates on the same principle. Some types of reclining furniture can feel as if they are more easily tipped forward when the ottoman is extended, such as gliders and rockers, due to the inherent movement of these types of furniture. This is why we have included the attached CAUTION statement on the hangtags: DO NOT EXIT THE RECLINING FURNITURE UNIT UNTIL IT IS RETURNED TO THE CLOSED AND UPRIGHT POSITION and ALWAYS LEAVE OTTOMAN CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE. Please see attachment for review of the warranty. MY RESPONSE TO LANE

From: [REDACTED]Date: February 25, 2016 at 6:50:26 AM EST To:[REDACTED] Subject: Re: Thank you for your inquiry(Case#[REDACTED])

I have not yet been contacted by anyone. Please have someone contact me via email at [REDACTED]. Thank you.

PHONE CONTACT FROM LANE On 02/25/16, Ms. [REDACTED] from Lane (telephone number [REDACTED]) called and left a message for me to call her back.

On 3/1/16, I left Ms. [REDACTED] a message to call me back.

On 3/4/16 at 12:18 pm, Ms. [REDACTED] called and we spoke. She asked why I did not contact Boscov’s. I told her I had called Boscov’s years ago and they told me to call Lane. I asked if Lane could at least send someone to look at the chairs. [REDACTED] told me the chairs were no longer under warranty and if anyone were to come out, I would be responsible for paying for the technicians’ fees and for any necessary labor. I don’t see how a safety hazard has anything to do with a warranty. I told [REDACTED] that Lane has shown no interest in addressing this problem. I would think they would want to address and correct any safety issue brought to their attention. I told [REDACTED] how disappointed I was with Lane and that I would never purchase from them again. I told her that not only has Lane been ignoring me and/or been non-responsive since 2014, but has shown no interest in my issue. I told her I would be filing complaints. She thanked me.

*I found this recall from [REDACTED] which states the same tipping problem, However, the problem with my Lane chairs is worse. These chairs tip over if you lean forward while you are still sitting on them, and only reclined about 4-5 “ from the floor.

The product, in the report: Lane Leather Recliner with separate foot rest (Danish Style). Serial #021352744, Style 00018534. Used as a lounge chair.

Purchased a Lane leather recliner from Boston Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 01/15/2014 & delivered on 01/22/2014. The Serial No. is 021352744 and Style No. is 00018534. In January, 2016, the chair collapsed backwards without warning and threw me from the chair injuring my neck and lower back. The chair will not stand upright now and I have to hold it up on a wall. There is a potential for dangerous and serious injury in it’s condition at this point. I have contacted Boston Store in Milwaukee and was told they could do nothing about it and referred me to their Warehouse, which also told me they could not help me. They referred me then to Lane Furniture, who I contacted and proceeded to give them the information of what happened. I was requested by email to give them information on the chair (model no., serial number, etc.) and send them was told upon receipt of this information, a Customer Service Rep. would call me, although I have yet to receive any call . .

The product, in the report: Lane Glider Recliner chair

I purchased a Lane Glider Recliner in 2005. Since I’ve owned this chair I thought something was wrong with the base. The chair would tip over backwards very easily when in the recline position. It seemed to me the base was too far forward which forced the center of gravity toward the front of the chair when reclining making it very unstable. I have on many occasions tipped over backward and hit my head on the floor. I did telephone Lane in 2006 and was told it must be my problem they have not had any issues with these glider recliners.

Now the base is lose and falling off. I searched web sites to determine if anyone else had this same tipping over problem. That’s when I found the Safety Alert concerning the glider base possibly being installed backwards. I immediately telephoned Lane to report my problem. Their answer was since the chair was made in 2005 it wouldn’t fall under this recall. I asked for an explanation of why my glider recliner did exactly what the recall was issued for (tipping over backwards). They had no answer, but said they would look into it and see if there were any issues reported with glider recliners made before 2008. I have heard nothing from Lane.

I am urging the CPSC to pressure Lane to expand their recall to glider recliners made before 2008 and repair a dangerous problem with their glider recliners.

The product, in the report: Blue Cloth Recliner

Around 01/03/2012 our Lane Recliner Broke while my Spouse was letting the leg rest down her leg got pinched between the leg rest and recliner, My son was laying in the floor with his leg barely under the Recliner lucky he jerked his leg away before the Recliner dropped down toward the floor.

I purchased this Recliner in 2010 I called Furniture Brand Inc and spoke to [REDACTED] Customer Service Agent and gave her the Style number and serial number of the Recliner and she said it was recalled in 2009 she could not explain why this Recliner was not replaced during that recall. [REDACTED] said the recall was due to defect in the wood and workmanship of the frame. She said something about sending someone out to try and replace the piece of wood I told her since it is defective wood and workmanship of the frame I wanted it replaced with a new recliner or refund of my $635.17 cost. [REDACTED] said she could not find a tech in the area to send out.

I contacted [REDACTED] Para Legal for Furniture Brands who said she would check on the problem afterwards she contacted me and said yes they need to send someone out to replace the one piece of wood instead of the whole frame of the recalled recliner. After I emailed her back and told her it was illegal to sell a recalled recliner that was recalled in 2009 and sold in 2010 it did not take long before she emailed me back and said I don’t know why one of our employee’s told you this recliner was recalled because it was not. So who do I believe ?

I have an email from [REDACTED] which she told me in the email it was recalled . After I gave her the style and serial number.
