Emergency room Made Aug 24, 2021, sent to the company Sep 2, 2021, published by CPSC Sep 17, 2021
The product, in the report: Jackson Catnapper electrical sofa recliner
Like clockwork every night my husband comes home for his meal break around 9:05pm & leaves around 9:20pm to return to work. On 7-27-2021 like any other night I prepared his meal, placed it in the microwave & was getting ready for bed. As normal he arrives & gets his plate to relax on his side of the sofa recliner to watch a little tv as he eats. While waiting for him to finish his meal break I began preparing an unemployment claim for a former team member. I finished my claim & laid the documents aside as I heard him say he was going back to work. As he walked out the front door he said he heard something that he thought was the remote falling to the floor but he also noticed the attention change of the dogs. Not thinking since he assumed the remote had fallen he continued on to work. His dinner bowl is still visible on the kitchen counter Approximately 4 minutes after he left the dogs & smoke detector alerted myself something was wrong. I jumped up & ran to the living room where I found the sofa dropping fire to the flooring underneath & flames already developing on the floor. I panicked, dousing it with water using a small [REDACTED] bowl I had left on the counter from dinner. I attempted a second bowl but at that point the flames were coming through the bottom of the cushion & arm rest area on his side of the sofa. Smoke & flames filled my home fast. I ran back to the bedroom, grabbed my phone & called 911. At that point I had just enough time to grab my 2 dog crates & drag them to safety out the front door. As I’m dragging the crates, my porch starts falling in and the dogs panic, escaping the crate knocking me down the steps injuring my right leg & knee. Two minutes on the call with 911 I had to hang up & call my husband before he made it back inside the plant where he works. Within 6 minutes my home was destroyed. We lost everything because of a Jackson Catnapper electrical sofa recliner. Nine minutes into this the fire department arrived & extinguished the fire leaving nothing more than ruins. At approximately 11pm the Red Cross shows up to assist. At that point I could no longer stand the pain in my leg and went to the emergency room when I found out I had a torn ligament in my right knee. 2 As we prepared for this disaster I began to collect all of my paperwork surrounding my home and this sofa recliner. I purchased the Catnapper reclining sofa from Farmer’s Furniture May 12th, 2017. On 6-7-18, it was reported to Farmer’s Furniture that the matching reclining sofa to the one that burnt was giving mechanical issues & smelled of wires burning leaving the foot rest extended. After going back & forth on the warranty, Farmer’s agreed to replace the power switch & completed an in home repair on 7-6-18. It was not an authorized expert that completed the repair but that of the finance manager [REDACTED] & warehouse worker [REDACTED]. The switch that was removed showed signs of burnout melt. [REDACTED] took the defective switch for disposal and never reported the issue of a hazard. With that said, I feel had this been reported it may have opened a possibility of recall possibly preventing the total loss of my home as we could have replaced the hazardous parent item as [REDACTED] now denies her involvement in the repair. It is our belief that the noise heard as my husband left for work on the night of 7-27-21 was not of that of the remote drop but that of the power source exploding into ignition causing the fire. Upon arrival of the fire department it was noted the hot spot where the sofa sat. On 7-30-21 both sofa recliners were taken into evidence by my insurance company. Sadly my insurance policy only covers the basic amount required of the home value with minimal replacement coverage. My ultimate goal is to ensure this does not happen to another consumer. It is my belief that Jackson Catnapper and Farmer’s Furniture should be held responsible for the remaining damages & losses due to the electrical hazard & the neglectful disregard of safety on behalf of Farmer’s Furniture contributing to this incident. I have attached several links of photos for your review. Thank you for your time and consideration of my report. I look forward to hearing from you. Kindest regards, [REDACTED]
