The product, in the report: Flexsteel Midway Power Reclining Sofa/Loveseat
I purchased the Flexsteel Midway Power Reclining Sofa and Loveseat from Furniture and Appliancemart in Stevens Point, WI. During a visit from my grandchildren in November 2023, I noticed that my 5 year old granddaughter was sitting on the loveseat and her foot/leg naturally slid inside of the space between the seat cushion and the back cushion. When looking further into this I found that the space between the seat cushion and back cushion was 5+ inches and I could fit a spaghetti squash(the size of a child’s head) into this space. The power controls to recline the sofa/loveseat are on the inside of the sofa arm, therefore, a child could definitely get a foot/leg or head in that space and also intentionally or by accident hit the control button which would power the couch to go back to original position. This action could crush a child’s head.
I have tried to call Furniture and Appliancemart as well as Flexsteel without any reasonable resolution. I first contacted [REDACTED] at Furniture & Appliancemart in November 2023 They added more filling into the cushion which did not make a change in the 5+ inch space between the cushions. I then contacted [REDACTED] at Flexsteel on 11/16/23 because Furniture and Appliancemart said they could do nothing further to help. [REDACTED] said she will work through Furniture & Appliancemart and will contact Furniture & Appliancemart with recommendations. I have made several calls to Furniture & Appliancemart as well as Flexsteel and have not had anyone address the issue further. I have also requested the safety specifications from Flexsteel and Furniture & Appliancemart, but have not received it. On 2/13/2024 I called Flexsteel again and spoke with [REDACTED]. I asked to speak with a manager. [REDACTED] said [REDACTED] would call me back. To date, I have not heard from [REDACTED] or [REDACTED]. I’m not sure what else I can do to prevent injury or death by this power reclining sofa/loveseat. I have four grandchildren ages 6, 4, 4, and 9 months that visit often. In fact, I babysit them full time in the summer and just don’t want them to get hurt.

No one hurt Made Jul 16, 2015, sent to the company Sep 1, 2015, published by CPSC Sep 16, 2015
The product, in the report: power recliner
The consumer said that when the footrest portion is tilted up, there is the potential for it to tip forward. The consumer said that there have been 3 instances of a person sitting in the chair and it seemed as if it would tip over. Also, a different person sat in the chair and when they leaned forward to adjust the chair, it seemed as if it were going to tip over.
The chair tipped forward on one occasion and hit the floor, but the footrest did not go back to the folded position.
The incidents occurred on 7/12, 7/13 & 7/16. The person was not injured, but the consumer believes that the potential was present.
(7/16/2015) The consumer called the retailer and told them about the problem. The retailer’s rep. ([REDACTED]) came out to the consumer’s home today and examined the chair. [REDACTED] told the consumer that the chair is working properly. The consumer said that she agreed with [REDACTED], but believes that the chair should not have the potential to flip forward, when the footrest is up. The consumer asked [REDACTED] to take the chair back and to contact the mfr. for them. She said that [REDACTED] ended up walking out on them, because he didn’t see anything wrong with it.
The consumer’s daughter called the mfr. and left them a voice message about her concerns and they are waiting for a return call.
The mfr. did not appear to have any product recalls on CPSC’s site. The consumer considers the chair a safety hazard.
