The product, in the report: Electric power recliner chair upholstered in faux leather with track-forward zero wall-hugger clearance. Features integrated power headrest, a built-in metal-to-the-floor power tracking mechanism, and side buttons with built-in USB/Type-C charging ports.
Product used is the CHITA Hadley Modern Zero Wall Hugger Power Recliner. We purchased two identical units. My 83 year old mother is a daily user and my sister used it during stability testing. This is standard residential daily use. The tipping behavior occurs during ordinary activities such as reaching forward while seated to grab a blanket. We have discovered a severe and dangerous geometric balance defect in this models center of gravity when the footrest is partially or fully extended. When a person sits in the chair with the footrest out and performs standard movements like bending slightly forward to pick up a slipped blanket or reaching for an object the entire rear metal base frame lifts completely off the floor. This causes the heavy motorized chair to violently nose dive and tip forward. My 83 year old mother experienced this while using the chair and nearly crashed to the floor. Fortunately I was standing right next to her and caught her before a serious injury could occur. We have replicated this exact tipping failure across both identical units we purchased. Furthermore we have a 1.5 year old toddler frequently in the home who climbs on furniture which creates a catastrophic crushing or pinning hazard. When contacted with video proof the manufacturer CHITA Living formally refused to assist or offer a return. They stated in writing that the tipping behavior is functioning as designed and that users must remain entirely rigid and immobilized while the footrest is extended to avoid destabilizing the chair. This is a severe systemic engineering flaw that poses an immediate risk of injury to elderly consumers and small children.
