Emergency room Made Jan 7, 2016, sent to the company Feb 11, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2016
The product, in the report: Power Space Saver Recliner Fabric:19647 Blonde
The recliner was delivered to the consumer’s home in Dec 2015.
The consumer stated that the chair tipped on her twice in the slightly reclined position. The consumer was able to control her balance and did not get injured. The consumer thought that the chair was not assembled correctly. She inspected the chair to make sure it was assembled correctly.
The consumer’s mother sat on the recliner chair for the first time (estimated 12/04/15) after delivery. She reclined the chair a little bit. Her feet were off of the ground. Upon getting off the chair, the chair tipped over (forward). The consumer’s mother was getting off of the chair while it was slightly reclined.
The consumer’s mother lost her footing and hit her forehead on the front table. Her mother suffered a deep, inch long cut to the area around the eyebrow. She was taken to the emergency room at Holyoke Hospital because the bleeding did not stop. They glued the laceration on the forehead. The consumer’s mother was sent home. The consumer’s mother was complaining about soreness throughout her body for some time after the incident occurred.
The consumer’s mother did not sit in the chair after that.
The consumer went to the retailer the day after the incident occurred. The consumer was informed that a representative will come to her house to see how her mother gets in and out of the chair. The consumer informed them that she will not allow her mother to sit in that chair.
A representative came out to the consumer’s house to inspect the chair. The representative sat in the chair and reclined it to inspect. The consumer put the chair in the position that her mother was injured in. The consumer placed her hand on the seat and the chair tipped over. The representative informed the consumer that her mother got out of the chair in an incorrect position. The representative informed her that her mother should have made the chair fully erect before getting off. The representative informed her that they will write to the company to notify them of the incident. The consumer has not heard from the retailer or the company after that.
On 12/30/15, the consumer woke up from hearing her mother in discomfort. Her mother was standing up but could not move her neck and shoulder. Her mother was trying to sit down but was unable too. Consumer called 911. Her mother was taken to the hospital. The consumer’s mother did not suffer from stroke or any heart related issues. At the hospital, they informed the consumer that the vertebrae in her mother’s neck were stuck. They provided her mother with many prescription pain killers for the neck pain. The consumer’s mom was taken to a nursing home/rehabilitation facility as a short term inpatient. Her mother is still at the rehab facility. The consumer was informed by the facility staff that this probably occurred due to the chair incident.
The consumer does not know if the battery pack is included in recall # 15-731.
