No one hurt Made Nov 25, 2012, sent to the company Dec 18, 2012, published by CPSC Jan 11, 2013
The product, in the report: Bunk Bed that can also be used as two twin beds on the ground.
Summary: No injury. Manufacturing error could lead to serious injury. Two Twin beds that can be mounted as a bunk bed. Construction error makes it likely that the upper bunk is not secured.
Purchasing Details: We purchased a bunk bed from American Furniture Warehouse Firestone store [REDACTED] on Sunday Nov 11th, 2012. We picked up the bunk bed on Wednesday Nov 14th, 2012 and assembled it that evening.
Design Details: The bunk bed design enables the beds to be used as individual beds, or in a bunk configuration. To secure the upper bunk, the instructions describe placing a 3 and 9/16” long x 17/32” wide hollow metal pin in a hole pre-drilled at the factory in each corner post of the lower bed and upper beds. The upper bed is then placed on to the metal pin, securing it against lateral movement and ensuring that some vertical motion will keep the upper bunk on the pin. As we prepared to stack the beds, it became readily apparent that the pre-drilled holes did not fit the metal pins. The pre-dilled holes were a touch over 2 and 1/2” deep and 3/8” wide. The width is precisely what is needed for 1” by 3/8” wooden dowels provided with the bed set for other joints. The 1” dowel can go all the way down into the pre-drilled hole.
Problem with the design: As the metal pins do not fit in the pre-drilled holes, most installers would likely place a wooden dowel in to each hole of the lower bunk, and then mount the upper bunk. However, this course of action would most likely push the wooden dowel in to the lower bunk, leaving the upper bunk susceptible to horizontal shear forces and vertical motion. In best scenario, only a 1/2” length of the wooden dowel is securing the bunk against vertical motion. Further, if there is vertical motion, this could move the dowel lower, resulting in no stabilization for horizontal motion.
Likely outcome: If the bunk is not secured properly, the upper bunk could fall off causing serious injury.
Notice: We notified American Furtniture Warehouse on Nov 15th. They offered to send a technician on Nov 20th. We decided to manufacture our own pins. I purchased a 4 foot by 3/8” diameter steel dowel, and I cut this in to 5” long segments. These fit perfectly. Our bunk bed is now secured. I am concerned about other units of this product in the warehouse or installed recently as these were not likely secured properly.
