No one hurt Made Aug 10, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 1, 2011
The product, in the report: White wooden bunkbeds, with twin on top and full on bottom
This evening, my husband was doing as normal - putting our children to bed in their Cargo brand bunk beds. The two children were on the bottom bunk, one child is 5 years of age, and the other is 4. Their combined weight is no more than approximately 95 pounds. My husband sat at the right side of the bed to read them their story. As he was sitting there, no one being in motion, the bed collapsed below him, falling to the ground. It appears that the beam that holds the two sides of the bed together completely cracked, split and gave way under all of them. It was a loud cracking sound and then hit the ground instantly. There are cracks at all areas where the bed is bolted to its beams to hold the headboards and footboards together.
Immediately my husband and I jumped up, removed the upper bunk and took photos of the collapsed bottom bunk. This is extremely scary and i have no idea what would have happened if a child was on the upper bunk or if we had not been there. The top bunk could have easily come down as the bottom support system was lost.
I am truly troubled and disgusted that something that shows compliance with certain safety regulations has now nearly caused potential severe injury to three of my family members and I plan to act as necessary to resolve this issue and REPLACE these beds with one that is safe.
Please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
