  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 22, 2023, sent to the company Jul 20, 2023, published by CPSC Aug 3, 2023

The product, in the report: Picture frame

Caller is reporting tiny shards of glass in the corner of the picture frame. Caller stated that it is instructed to press on the glass to release the frame, however, when that is done the glass breaks because it is made from cheap glass. Caller stated that he reported the incident to the store but they have not removed the product from the shelf. He stated that his report from the store is [REDACTED].

Caller stated that this product is a safety hazard and should be removed from the shelves before consumers are seriously injured.

You requested model number and serial number. I don’t think this product has either, but you will find Walmart’s identifying numbers on the included photos. The product packaging identifies the product as FRONT LOADING FRAME.

Please note: I found approximately 19 variations of this product at my local Walmart store (Waynesboro, PA 17268). These frames are pretty much identical except that they come in many different sizes. All this you can see in the included photos. These photos are representative of the various sizes; I could not photograph them all.

This is clearly a dangerous product. When you follow the brief instructions, It easily breaks into extremely sharp needle-like shards of glass. I have spent several hours researching this product, taking photos and contacting Walmart and then the CPSC. I certainly hope CPSC will investigate this matter with urgency, because apparently this product is widely available.

The problem: The instructions for these frames say to push out the glass at the corners. When you do, the quite thin and apparently poor-quality glass easily splinters at the corners, leaving shards of glass. There is no warning or caution notice in the instructions. I looked at reviews online for this product at Walmart.com. Several reviewers noted that the glass broke when they tried to use this product. I returned the picture frame I bought because there were broken pieces of glass in the packaging, though I had not used the product in any way. At the store, I observed two frames with small pieces of broken glass in the transparent packaging, and saw one frame with a very large crack. (See photo). Clearly this product is resulting in broken glass in countless instances. I reported this product to Walmart Corporate Customer Service on approximately 5/29/23. When I called to find out the status of my report approximately 6/20/22, they said only that my report was to moved to a different office.

I was dismayed. My hope was that Walmart would quickly remove this product from store shelves. When I took these photos, Saturday 7/1/23, the product was still on the shelves here in Waynesboro, PA. One month after I reported this problem to Walmart, it appears, as far as I can determine that they have taken no action. And so I reported this product to the CPSC (first by phone).

It is my hope that you can move to quickly have this product removed from the shelves. It would be very surprising if customers have not been injured by this product. Given that the product easily breaks into very sharp pieces-shards of glass-it would not be surprising if serious injuries have occurred.

Given the time and effort I have put into this report, I hope CPSC will advise me (later) what action you have taken:
