  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Nov 14, 2021, sent to the company Dec 1, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 15, 2021

The product, in the report: From Amazon “Carex Toilet Safety Frame - Toilet Safety Rails With Adjustable Width - Toilet Rails For Elderly, Handicap, Home Health Care Equipment After Surgery, Supports 300lbs”

I purchased and properly installed a Carex Toilet Support Rail B36800 from Amazon in July of this year for my 97 year old father at the recommendation of his occupational therapist. I only just installed it about three weeks ago. Within about two or three days, my father grabbed one of the bars from the side and got no support. He fell and hit his head on the wall. Thankfully he wasn’t seriously injured. It could have been much worse! This product offers no lateral support. The front of the frame simply rests on the toilet rim under the toilet seat. It’s a terrible design and surely only a matter of time before many people who are in a physically weakened condition will be seriously injured. I tried to warn consumers on Amazon but they didn’t show my negative review. This should be taken off the market soon.

The product, in the report: Toilet Support Rail. This product is designed to assist those with physical limitations sit and stand from a toilet with minimal danger.

The Carex Toilet Support Rail B36800 is designed to allow someone with limited mobility safely sit on and stand up from a toilet. We purchased this for my wife who will be having hip surgery. This rail design attaches to the bolts at the back of the seat and then the front arms sit on the bowl. The design allows for different styles of toilets by swinging in or out to fit the style. There is no way to lock the front arms into position.

I installed this on November 29, 2016. Two days later as she sat down and put her weight on the right side handle it slipped off the toilet bowl and dropped several inches. Fortunately this was pre-surgery and no injury occurred. I dread the thought of what could have happened had it been post-surgery. I also dread the thought of other more physically limited people using this product and experiencing a similar incident.

I believe a simple re-design could prevent this from occurring, but until then, it should not be used.
